Water Flow And Quality - Purdue University, Jake R. Carlson, Natasha Brown
Water Flow And Quality - Purdue University, Jake R. Carlson, Natasha Brown
Data Curation Profiles Directory
This data curation profile focuses on a data set based on the examination of water flow and water quality using a tile drainage system. The researcher uses the data to research the impact of drain spacing, of soil management practices on nitrate leeching, and also the impacts of drainage on crop growth and yield. The data curation needs relate to the process of preparing the data for sharing and use by others. Currently, the data, which spans a 25 year period, is not well documented and would require considerable investment for it to be ready for use by others.

Human Genomics - Purdue University, Jake R. Carlson, Natasha Brown
Data Curation Profiles Directory
The researcher interviewed for this data curation profile is working to generate criteria needed to do experiments in human genomic research. Specifically, she focuses on the discovery of codes that regulate the expression of human genes. Her data management needs center on the maintenance of her data and the use of genomic data repositories. She shared that although she currently posts her data and scripts on her personal website, she does not have the resources or expertise to adequately maintain her data. She is interested in depositing her data into a repository once she is confident in the soundness of …
Traffic Flow - Purdue University, Jake R. Carlson
Traffic Flow - Purdue University, Jake R. Carlson
Data Curation Profiles Directory
The research of focus for this data curation profile involves the study of real-time traffic signal performance measures. The researcher creates profiles of traffic movement for specific intersections by measuring the number of vehicles passing through an intersection and the amount of time spent at an intersection on a movement-by-movement basis over a 24 hour period. The overall goal of the research is to enable the state department of transportation to prioritize which traffic signals need improvement. The data management needs include database management services, assistance in developing sound data management and documentation practices, a standardized workflow that would allow …
Egfr May Couple Moderate Alcohol Consumption To Increased Breast Cancer Risk, Christopher P. Mill, Julia Chester, David J. Riese Ii
Egfr May Couple Moderate Alcohol Consumption To Increased Breast Cancer Risk, Christopher P. Mill, Julia Chester, David J. Riese Ii
Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications
Alcohol consumption is an established risk factor for breast cancer. Nonetheless, the mechanism by which alcohol contributes to breast tumor initiation or progression has yet to be definitively established. Studies using cultured human tumor cell lines have identified signaling molecules that may contribute to the effects of alcohol, including reactive oxygen species and other ethanol metabolites, matrix metalloproteases, the ErbB2/Her2/Neu receptor tyrosine kinase, cytoplasmic protein kinases, adenylate cyclase, E-cadherins, estrogen receptor, and a variety of transcription factors. Emerging data suggest that the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase may contribute to breast cancer genesis and progression. Here we integrate …
Variations On The Brazilian Orpheus Theme, Marília Scaff Rocha Ribeiro
Variations On The Brazilian Orpheus Theme, Marília Scaff Rocha Ribeiro
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper, "Variations on the Brazilian Orpheus Theme," Marília Scaff Rocha Ribeiro discusses Vinícius de Moraes's play Orfeu da Conceição (1956) together with two of its filmic adaptations, namely Marcel Camus's Black Orpheus (1959) and Carlos Diegues's Orfeu (1999). Ribeiro's analysis is located in the context of the race debates of the second half of the twentieth century in Brazil. Ribeiro argues that the periodic resurfacing of a musician from the favelas as a special being who is able to chant and enchant speaks to the appeal both of popular music and of the thematic of race, issues that …

From Diaspora To Nomadic Identity In The Work Of Lispector And Felinto, Paula Jordão
From Diaspora To Nomadic Identity In The Work Of Lispector And Felinto, Paula Jordão
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "From Diaspora to Nomadic Identity in the Work of Lispector and Felinto" Paula Jordão analyzes Clarice Lispector's A Hora da Estrela (1977; The Hour of the Star, Trans. Giovanni Pontiero, 1992) and Marilene Felinto's As Mulheres de Tijucopapo (1982; The Women of Tijucopapo, trans. Irene Matthews, 1994). Despite being stylistically different, Lispector's A Hora da Estrela and Felinto's As Mulheres de Tijucopapo depict protagonists who share the same social and ethnic background and diasporic identity as women from the Northeast of Brazil. A closer look at the narrative trajectory of these two main characters shows us that …

Letters To The Editor, Bert Chapman, Jon Shuler
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Letter responding to an article predicting the phaseout of government information librarians in a survey of Association of Research Library (ARL) Directors. We criticize this conclusion maintaining that the multifaceted and interdisciplinary nature of government information makes it more critical that libraries users needing government information resources need to have highly trained and specializing librarians with extensive knowledge of these resources assisting them.
