I In her article "Black Australia 'Writes Back' to the Literary Traditions of Empire" Danica Čerče discusses the verse of Australian Indigenous authors Romaine Moreton and Alf Taylor, notable for the overt objection to the institutional and historical processes. Research on the educational achievement of racialized minorities and immigrants have largely discussed culture as either a deficit or an advantage for academic success. This paper explores gender differences in educational achievement and how the educational choices of second-generation Hmong American girls are impacted by racially constructed gender norms. In response to hegemonic and subordinated femininities, second-generation Hmong American girls pursue education to enter mainstream America and reject Asian ethnic culture and femininity. Gender equality is normalized and equated with White femininity and American mainstream culture while Asian femininity and ethnic culture is constructed and subordinated as “other”. This research …

The Role Of Argumentation In Hypothetico-Deductive Reasoning During Problem-Based Learning In Medical Education: A Conceptual Framework, Hyunjung Ju, Ikseon Choi

One of the important goals of problem-based learning (PBL) in medical education is to enhance medical students’ clinical reasoning—hypothetico-deductive reasoning (HDR) in particular—through small group discussions. However, few studies have focused on explicit strategies for promoting students’ HDR during group discussions in PBL. This paper proposes a novel conceptual framework that integrates Toulmin’s argumentation model (1958) into Barrows’s HDR process (1994). This framework explains the structure of argumentation (a claim, data, and a warrant) contextualized in each phase of HDR during PBL. This paper suggests four instructional strategies—understanding argument structures, questioning, elaborating on structural knowledge, and assessing argumentation—for promoting medical …

The development of primary school teachers is an important aspect of a country’s economic, social, and political well-being. The use of particular pedagogies in teacher education may greatly influence how teachers perform in their classrooms after completing their training programs. This micro-ethnography investigated the extent to which teacher educators in Botswana’s College of Education used problem-based learning (PBL) approaches in the development of preservice primary teachers. While the findings of this micro-ethnography showed that particular teacher educators rarely used problem-based learning approaches, the accompanying insights helped to bring a deeper understanding of what is needed for Botswana’s teacher education program …

Archaeological Investigation Of An Iron Age Fortress On Dana Island, Turkey, Nathan C. Mcburnett

In this project, the Bogsak Archaeological survey team investigated a fortress on the northern crest of the mountain on Dana Island, located just off the coast of Turkey in the Rough Cilician Region. Although the interior remains of the fortress, consisting of a large number of ceramics and architectural features such as a basilica, were dated to the Late Roman Era, we found that the fortress itself actually predates this. Based on ceramic remains being used as aggregate in the fortress wall, the team was able to date the fortress itself to the Iron Age (Classical Era). GIS software was …

Crash location is a critical piece of information for any type of safety-related analysis; however, there is often a high percentage of error in crash latitude and longitude coordinates. Currently, a time-consuming, manual process is used in Indiana to correct faulty crash location coordinates. The Crash Location Improvement Program (CLIP) is a tool developed by the Purdue University Center for Road Safety, with support from Indiana LTAP, which allows users to quickly and easily identify and correct crash coordinates, allowing for a more accurate safety analysis. "Compared with optical sensors, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can provide important damage information due to its ability to map areas affected by earthquakes independently from weather conditions and solar illumination. In 2013, a new TerraSAR-X mode named staring spotlight (ST), whose azimuth resolution was improved to 0.24 m, was introduced for various applications. This very high resolution (VHR) data source made it possible to extract detailed information from individual buildings.

Rare earth elements (REE) contain unique chemical and physical properties such as lanthanum, are found in small concentrations, need extensive precise processes to separate, and are critical components of modern technologies such as laser guidance systems, personal electronics such as IPhones, satellites, and military weapons systems as varied as Virginia-class fast attack submarines, DDG- 51 Aegis destroyers, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and precision guided munitions. The U.S. has some rare earth resources, but is heavily dependent on access to them from countries as varied as Afghanistan, Bolivia, and China.
