Executive Function And Motor Skills In Preschool Children, Meggin Kelley Apr 2019

Executive Function And Motor Skills In Preschool Children, Meggin Kelley

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of a short-term motor program on the executive function and motor skills in preschool children utilizing a Pretest and Post test design. The present study was designed with two periods of program intervention- once in the fall and once in the spring. It was hypothesized that a 10-week motor intervention would demonstrate positive motor and executive function gains in the experimental (motor) group. Children ranging from 4 to 6 years of age participated in this study. Baseline motor and executive function scores were obtained during the Pretest phase. Subsequently, …

Perceived Workload In High School Students, Emmaly Baker Apr 2019

Perceived Workload In High School Students, Emmaly Baker

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

The proposed study extended the findings of Laurie-Rose and her colleagues (2017) examining workload in children. The goal of the study was to effectively use an interactive technology—Mentimeter—to assess workload. The study employed two cognitive tasks, the Symbol-Digit Substitution and the d2 test of attention to determine whether or not students can discriminate the demands of tasks with objectively different workload profiles. The study further examined the role of Executive Function with these cognitive tasks. Workload ratings were consistent with objective demands of the task, suggesting that Mentimeter may be a valuable tool to administer workload assessments in the classroom.

Greek Tragedy At Marion Correctional: An Exploration Of Directing Theatre In Prison, Elise G. Woods Apr 2019

Greek Tragedy At Marion Correctional: An Exploration Of Directing Theatre In Prison, Elise G. Woods

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

In this project, I describe and analyze forces of freedom and coercion through the process of directing Trojan Women by Euripides at Marion Correctional Institution. This analysis documents each stage of the theatrical process—from project proposal to final performance and discussion—through ethnographic, arts-based research using personal observations, primary accounts from performers and audience members, and secondary sources. By exploring the experience of directing Trojan Women in the prison setting, I analyze forces of coercion and freedom in both theatre-making practices and prison. As a result, I assert the uniquely positive aspects and productive utilization's of coercion through theatre in a …

An Examination Of Drive For Muscularity Scale Scores And The Female/Athlete Paradox Among Collegiate Female Student-Athletes, Emily Matisko Apr 2019

An Examination Of Drive For Muscularity Scale Scores And The Female/Athlete Paradox Among Collegiate Female Student-Athletes, Emily Matisko

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Although muscularity is a trait that is traditionally associated with masculinity, women with muscular figures have been deemed more socially acceptable throughout the past decade (Indiana University Health, 2015). That said, societal standards still dictate a specific degree of muscularity that women should attain, creating a complicated paradox for female athletes (Steinfeldt, Carter, Benton, & Steinfeldt,2011). Various studies (Steinfeldt et al., 2011; Krane, Choi, Baird, Aimar, & Kauer, 2004) have established that female athletes exhibit a higher drive for muscularity when compared to their non-athletic counterparts, but most of the existing literature does not examine if and how a female …

Gender Essentialism And Responses To Candidates’ Messages, Meredith Meyer Dec 2018

Gender Essentialism And Responses To Candidates’ Messages, Meredith Meyer

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

People often form negative attitudes against those who deviate from gender norms. Within the political realm, this has the potential to translate into effects on perceptions of candidate likability and traits. Female candidates who tend to focus on issues stereotypically thought of as feminine are generally more positively evaluated than those who focus on stereotypically masculine domains. The current studies investigate whether these effects vary depending on the extent to which people endorse gender essentialism, which is the tendency to attribute gender differences to relatively more intrinsic, innate, and immutable factors versus believing that gender differences are largely due to …

Otterbein China Librarians Exchange Program Documentations and Publications

This paper is a translation of the "Study on the Concept and Scope of Reading Promotion" by Youhua Chen, initially published in Chinese in the Library Journal, 2017,36(04):19 - 24+18.DOI:10.13663/j.cnki.lj.2017.04.003.

The paper summarizes the practical and theoretical development of reading promotion in various countries in the world and reveals the status of the magnificent practices and active research of reading promotion in China. According to the conceptual object, the existing definitions of reading promotion are divided into the "goal-oriented conceptual model" and the "content-oriented conceptual model". The defining principles and conceptual scopes of these two models are analyzed. Starting with …

Ohio Leed Schools And Academic Performance: A Panel Study, 2006–2016, Allen Prindle, Ryan P. Thombs Oct 2018

Ohio Leed Schools And Academic Performance: A Panel Study, 2006–2016, Allen Prindle, Ryan P. Thombs

Business, Accounting and Economics Faculty Scholarship

This study investigates the effect that Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) had on academic performance using a difference-in-differences (DID) estimator using data from the years 2006–2016. By obtaining data from the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, this investigation examines the effect that LEED design had on the Student Performance Index for schools that opened in the year 2012. Each LEED school was matched with a non-LEED school based on several criteria. The study determined that LEED did not have an impact on the Student Performance Index. Though we find no relationship, green schools …

We Have Seen It All. At The Mall, Carla Corroto Jul 2018

We Have Seen It All. At The Mall, Carla Corroto

Sociology Faculty Scholarship

Many of us have conflicted attitudes toward suburban shopping malls in the United States. Malls are environmentally irresponsible, reinforce a dependence on cars, fortify economic and social stratification, generate private-property, emphasize consumption, and are architecturally disappointing. Malls are also the places where we bought school shoes, where we garnered our first jobs, where we may see a diversity of products and people and tastes, and, remarkably, malls can still surprise us. This article is an overview of mall criticism and a narrative from reluctant mall enthusiasts. We sit at an equivocal place—in between the complexity and contradiction of the suburban …

Book Nook For All: How Library Partnerships Can Grow Advocacy, Jessica C. Mcintosh, Kirsten Peninger

Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship

“Town and gown” partnerships—i.e., partnerships between universities and the communities in which they operate—are growing in popularity and strength, and libraries should be leaders in creating these partnerships. In the spring of 2018, Courtright Memorial Library (CML) and Westerville Public Library (WPL) joined forces to bring a shared browsing collection to their local constituents. This article will examine the process, outcome, and continued work of developing and marketing this collection. It will also explore the partnership that developed naturally between these two libraries of different types during the creation of the shared browsing collection, specifically the cosponsoring of a collaborative …

Written With Love: An Interpretation Of Love Stories Through Movement And Emotion, Olivia Crawford

Although it may be difficult to see other points of view besides, it is possible to connect to stories that are not our own. The purpose of this study is to assess how people perceive and connect to different love stories, and how these perceptions differ between those in the fine arts and those in the arts & sciences. Participants in this study will be exposed to a dance …

Unintentional Minor Injury In Children: The Role Of Executive Function And Motor Ability, Denise Richard Apr 2018

Unintentional Minor Injury In Children: The Role Of Executive Function And Motor Ability, Denise Richard

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

Abstract

This study builds off of previous research developed by Bennett Murphy and colleagues (Bennet Murphy, Gilliland, & Griswold-Rhymer, 2001; Bennett Murphy, Murphy, & Laurie-Rose, 2001) by examining executive function (EF) in an attempt to isolate the aspects of attention that may contribute to unintentional injury. The aim of the present study was to explore whether a relationship exists between EF, motor ability, and unintentional injury in preschool aged children. This study consisted of 13 preschool children between the ages of 5 and 6 who were recruited from two Catholic preschools located in Ohio. All children took part in two …

Attitudes Toward Prisoners: An Introductory Study, Kathleen Geyer Apr 2018

Attitudes Toward Prisoners: An Introductory Study, Kathleen Geyer

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

The United States has the largest prison population in the world and it just seems to keep growing (Tsai & Scommegna 2012). The current research focuses on attitudes toward prisoners and how that may influence someone’s likelihood of returning to prison. Attitudes toward prisoners was measured using the Attitudes Toward Prisoners scale (ATP). The research hypotheses are as follows: 1) females and people of color will have higher original ATP scores than males and whites; 2) people who have experienced discrimination and/or have some connection to the prison system will have higher original ATP scores than those who have not; …

Physical Boundaries And Social Networks: How Structural Configurations And Networks Of Support Influence Life Satisfaction In Assisted And Independent Living Facilities, Morgan Watts Apr 2018

Physical Boundaries And Social Networks: How Structural Configurations And Networks Of Support Influence Life Satisfaction In Assisted And Independent Living Facilities, Morgan Watts

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

As the elderly population continues to grow, the importance of gaining knowledge on how assisted and independent living facilities affects residents’ psychological, social, and physical well-being also continues to grow. This research looked at how the structural difference of independent and assisted living facilities (the integration of living and recreational areas between different levels of assisted residents) affect residents’ social support networks and happiness in independent living as compared to assisted living. A qualitative analysis was used to determine other important themes about the well-being of these older adults.

The two facilities used in this study included Friendship Village, which …
