The Lifestyle Of The "Urban Tribe", Nichelle D. Mcnabb, Rachel Friedman
Communications Faculty Scholarship
It was once the norm for people to get married in their early twenties,
perhaps right after college or maybe during college. Once married, there was
the need to start a family as soon as possible. However, nowadays, people
appear to be substituting (at least for this period of time after college) the
traditional family structure with a new one – the “urban tribe.” This paper
takes a critical approach to examining portrayals of rituals in “urban tribes”
in two television shows – Will & Grace and Friends in which we argue that
the progressive elements of these shows counter …

Health and Sport Sciences Faculty Scholarship
The purpose of this study was to develop an Attribution of Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities (AREHD) scale. A convenience sample of undergraduate college students (n = 423) at four Midwestern universities was recruited to respond to the survey. A pilot test with undergraduate students (n = 23) found the survey had good acceptability and readability level (SMOG = 11th grade). Using exploratory factor analysis we found the two a priori subscales were confirmed: individual responsibility and social determinants. Internal reliabilities of the subscales were: individual responsibility (alpha = 0.87) and social determinants (alpha = 0.90). Test–retest stability reliabilities were: individual responsibility …

Otterbein China Librarians Exchange Program Documentations and Publications
Globalization has influenced educational philosophy and classroom practices around the world. The international collaboration between libraries promotes improvements that bring global perspectives into service design and development and serves as a catalyst for achieving our universities’ initiatives for internationalization. Using the results from surveys conducted within academic libraries in the U.S., the session explores how to successfully initiate and maintain cooperative international programs and how libraries can proactively serve an institutional leadership role in contributing to their campus globalization efforts.

"Better Than White Trash": Work Ethic, Latinidad And Whiteness In Rural Arkansas, Miranda Cady Hallett
"Better Than White Trash": Work Ethic, Latinidad And Whiteness In Rural Arkansas, Miranda Cady Hallett
Sociology Faculty Scholarship
Diverse sites in the US South are being transformed by "new Latino immigration." Rather than being a homogeneous process, experiences of migrant settlement are shaped by the racialized social worlds of particular historical social communities -- and may in turn transform local racial formations (Winders, 2005). In one small town in rural Arkansas, Latina and Latino migrants perform boundary work (Lamont, 2000; Hartigan, 2010), constructing their identities as "good" workers and neighbors. Although migrants assert belonging and dignity by framing themselves as "better than White trash," nonetheless this belonging is predicated on the reproduction of racial and class hierarchy as …
