Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

The purpose of the Capstone experience was to develop and implement a five-week peer-led building resilience and social-emotional skills training program at a public high school. This program addressed high school students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding resources, social-emotional skills, and resilience. A questionnaire was administered pre and post-program to measure effectiveness. The results indicated an increase in scores, demonstrating a clearer understanding in all three areas.

The Future Is Full Of Monsters: Queer Survival One Click At A Twine, 'Aolani N. Robinson Dec 2021

The Future Is Full Of Monsters: Queer Survival One Click At A Twine, 'Aolani N. Robinson

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Spurred by a desire to explore queer rhetoric through interactive forms of media, this project analyzed the game-making program Twine to uncover how independent queer creators use the tool to explore queer survival against time, capitalism, and constrained identities. A more accessible platform than other game-making tools, Twine’s unique interactivity puts the ability to make interactive games and stories into the hands of indie marginalized creators who are often overlooked in both mainstream gaming and queer rhetorics (Anthropy, 2012). Thus, this thesis contributes to queer rhetoric, game studies, and trans rhetorics by exploring the strategies indie Twine creators use in …

The Impact Of Structured Groups On Skill Acquisition For Children With Learning Disabilities, Sierra A. Montgomery Nov 2021

The Impact Of Structured Groups On Skill Acquisition For Children With Learning Disabilities, Sierra A. Montgomery

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

School-based occupational therapists support academic success within and outside the classroom through accommodations/strategies and modifications to student’s class environment. Children with learning disabilities face a variety of occupational challenges in school including completing class assignments, following school routines, tolerating unexpected/expected sounds, and developing/maintaining friendships. The purpose of this capstone experience was to gain clinical skills for school-based occupational therapy and to develop academic, social, and life skills lessons for children with learning disabilities as well as a parent newsletter with carryover activities and strategies. Achievement of these objectives address the gap and need for schools to provide services/education for children …

Misunderstood: A Phenomenological Study On Intersectionality And The Lived Experiences Of Black Millennial Student Affairs Professionals At Pwis, Emily P. Dixon

Theses and Dissertations

This applied dissertation was designed to further understand the lived experiences of Black millennial student affairs professionals navigating and advancing through a predominately white institution in the southern United States. This phenomenological study, framed by critical race theory and intersectionality, sought to ultimately use these lived experiences to advocate for change. A review of the literature highlighted the needs, values, and experiences of Black Millennials based on both identities, the experiences of working in student affairs/higher education with these experiences, and the need for intentional diversity efforts by higher educational institutions.

The researcher interviewed nine participants to learn more about …

Navigating Conversations Of Environmentalism On Social Media: From The Apocalyptic To The Aesthetic, Megan Provenzale Apr 2021

Navigating Conversations Of Environmentalism On Social Media: From The Apocalyptic To The Aesthetic, Megan Provenzale

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

This project examines environmental discourse and rhetorical appeals used on Instagram by environmental influencers and addresses the lack of scholarship about social mobile commerce, Instagram, and the popularity of “eco-influencers.” My research applies post-composition studies, circulation, and visual rhetoric to two eco-influencers, Greta Thunberg (@gretathunbeerg) and Jessica Clifton (@impactforgood). I argue that Thunberg and Clifton employ aesthetic and apocalyptic rhetoric to educate and communicate with their following about reducing their carbon footprint and reversing climate change. By collecting three months of Instagram posts employed by each influencer, I identify patterns related to environmentalism, stylistic choices in captions, and presentation of …

Doctoral Capstone Experience In Program And Policy Development- Selah Freedom, Ashley N. Jones Apr 2021

Doctoral Capstone Experience In Program And Policy Development- Selah Freedom, Ashley N. Jones

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

Child trafficking has been reported in all 50 states and affects more than 2 million children each year (Guardian Group, 2021). Involvement in human trafficking at a young age induces trauma that has a lasting effect on the victim’s personality and coping skills. A review of literature confirmed a need for more support of the use of occupational therapy with sex trafficking survivors. Despite support for the implementation of occupational therapy in similar trauma populations like domestic violence, homelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder, and disaster survivors, there is limited literature supporting the use of OT with human trafficking survivors (Gorman & …

Undergraduate Perception Of Peer Leadership In The Writing Center, Sabrina Louissaint Mar 2021

Undergraduate Perception Of Peer Leadership In The Writing Center, Sabrina Louissaint

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Writing center scholarship offers a plethora of research in the field of composition including different practices and skillsets offered to students. Hosten et al. (2016) describe writing centers to be an incubator for leadership skills, one that creates a blueprint for student leaders to succeed. Situated within the field of composition and rhetoric, this IRB-approved thesis acknowledges a gap in research on the role writing centers play in the development of undergraduate consultants’ leadership skills. Through interviewing various writing center directors as well as current and former undergraduate consultants from five universities, I examine peer leadership perception, while uncovering the …

Sibling Conflict And Caregiving For Aging Parents, Jennifer Elise Lawer Jan 2021

Sibling Conflict And Caregiving For Aging Parents, Jennifer Elise Lawer

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents the results of a grounded theory study of the key factors of sibling conflict when caregiving for an aging parent. Following interviews with 30 participants, I conducted initial coding, focused coding and theoretical coding, which led to the development of a theory that explains the relationship of conflict factors such as: beliefs & values, feelings & emotions, roles & expectations, and behaviors & responses. The dissertation includes a discussion of how birth order theories, power theories and psychodynamic theories apply to sibling conflict. In addition, I discuss how the findings apply to conflict resolution skills and offer …

Sex Based Differences In Trust And Dissent: An Exploration Of Leaders And Followers In Healthcare Management, Jennifer De Zayas Carmean Jan 2021

Sex Based Differences In Trust And Dissent: An Exploration Of Leaders And Followers In Healthcare Management, Jennifer De Zayas Carmean

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a quantitative study which looks at the ways in which healthcare followers perceive their leaders regarding gender, over the concepts of trust and organizational dissent. The study was open to members of non-clinical healthcare associations, but clinicians were not specifically excluded. Inferential statistics were inconclusive, as they directly contradict literature that directly correlates trust and dissent in the general business world. Reading subtextual, the outcome indicates possible sublimated conflict between and among both genders, for both followers and leaders. Objectively, women showed more trust in their female leaders, but subjectively this was not true. Indicators in the …

Eliminating Silos: Developing System Design For Information Sharing In Violence Prevention, Jacqueline Kulaga Jan 2021

Eliminating Silos: Developing System Design For Information Sharing In Violence Prevention, Jacqueline Kulaga

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

The 21st century has brought about changing social perspectives on victimization and offender accountability related to sexual violence. States across the United States have established, and continue to develop, legislation and protocols to address such violence. While there has been a great shift in combating this form of violence, it is essential to create structures to enhance services for victims as well as create recommendations for those who work to hold offenders of these violent crimes accountable. This dissertation was conducted using a qualitative content analysis (QCA) of documents from the Palm Beach County Sexual Assault Response Team (PBC SART), …

Qualitative Comparative Case Study Exploring The Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Conflicts Experienced By Nurses While Utilizing Ehr-Electronic Health Record Technology, Patricia Alejandra Casas Jan 2021

Qualitative Comparative Case Study Exploring The Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Conflicts Experienced By Nurses While Utilizing Ehr-Electronic Health Record Technology, Patricia Alejandra Casas

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Nurses are the largest group of health information technology system users. As the nurses are the focal point of patient care because they interact with multiple areas under the healthcare realm and manage multiple components of patient care, the use of EHR technology is likely to have an impact on their careers and healthcare delivery outcomes. Conflicts experienced during EHR use or adoption have been researched; however, despite these studies, understanding nurses’ experiences of conflicts remain underexplored; in particular, there have been no research studies that have differentiated between interpersonal and intrapersonal conflicts experienced. The general problem addressed in this …

Online Communication Wars: A Critical Recursive Frame Analysis Of Online Responses To The Article Entitled, “This Is Why Colin Kaepernick Took A Knee”, Rebecca Jean Arklie

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

The World Wide Web provides us with a doorway to explore our world and access to social media; a “place” where we can keep in touch with family and friends and meet people from different cultures. Social media provides us with the ability to communicate using an Avatar, providing us with anonymity. Unfortunately, this anonymity gives people the freedom to unapologetically express their opinions, using any type of language they desire, without fear of repercussions. This study of the social and cultural implications from anonymous, unrestrained comments in a discussion thread will interest communications experts, psychologists, academics, and peacekeepers because …

Relationship Of Child Sexual Abuse Survivor Self-Perception Of Consent To Current Functioning, Nathan R. Daly Jan 2021

Relationship Of Child Sexual Abuse Survivor Self-Perception Of Consent To Current Functioning, Nathan R. Daly

Theses and Dissertations

In 1998 Rind, Tromovitch and Bauserman conducted a meta-analysis using a college sample which challenged the prevailing belief that childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has inherent deleterious effects. Resultantly, the authors proposed alternative terminology (e.g., child-adult sex), without adequate investigation into what distinguishes child-adult sex from CSA. In response, the current study investigated the relationship between CSA, consent and adult functioning in a college sample. The sample consisted of 297 undergraduate college students, ranging in age from 18 to 63-years-old. Data was collected at a mid-sized university in the southeastern United States. The measures utilized in the study include the Symptom …

Intimate Partner Violence Survivors: The Relationship Between Risk Factors And Symptom Severity, Danielle Horrigan Millen Jan 2021

Intimate Partner Violence Survivors: The Relationship Between Risk Factors And Symptom Severity, Danielle Horrigan Millen

Theses and Dissertations

While violent crimes have been on a decline since 2005, domestic violence has been increasing steadily over the past decade (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2005, 2013, and 2014). A number of adult and childhood risk factors are associated with the increased likelihood of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization. Witnessing interparental violence and experiencing abuse as a child are both linked to increased likelihood of experiencing IPV as an adult. (Ehrenstaft et al., 2003; Magdol, Moffitt, Caspi, & Silva, 1998; Stith et al., 2000; Stith, Smith, Penn, Ward, & Tritt, 2004; Widom et al., 2014). Additionally, relationship factors, including length of …

Assessment Of Psychological Functioning In Retired Firefighters, Jordana Simone Pepper Jan 2021

Assessment Of Psychological Functioning In Retired Firefighters, Jordana Simone Pepper

Theses and Dissertations

The past decade has witnessed a significant increase in clinical attention directed to mental health problems in firefighters. The basis for heightened activity in this area is the convergence of evidence indicating that firefighters demonstrate significantly high levels of psychological disorders such as depression and PTSD (Henderson et al., 2016). A previously unexplored risk factor for psychopathology in firefighters is active retirement. Retirement can lead to a decline in psychological functioning, as well as a decline in a person’s self-concept clarity through group loss (Slotter, Winter & Soto, 2015). This loss has the potential to cause, or enhance, feelings of …

Judicial Decision Making And The Duty To Warn: An Empirical Study Of Case Law, Casey Dunn Ravitz Jan 2021

Judicial Decision Making And The Duty To Warn: An Empirical Study Of Case Law, Casey Dunn Ravitz

Theses and Dissertations

Duty to warn is an important staple of psychologists’ ethics training. It is also a widely misunderstood and problematic law that does not necessarily capture the intricacies of working with high-risk or potentially violent clients in outpatient settings. While inpatient settings allow for some control over one’s clients, outpatient settings increase the difficulty in performing risk assessments in duty to warn situations, as well as with managing clients who are not within one’s custody. While researchers have long identified issues related to psychologists’ understanding of the duty to warn, none have empirically explored whether the trends seen in individual cases …

A Comparison Of Clinic-Based And Telehealth Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Abigail Peskin Jan 2021

A Comparison Of Clinic-Based And Telehealth Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Abigail Peskin

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the rich evidence for early intervention to prevent/treat emotional and behavioral disorders, a gap continues to exist between research and practice, and multitudinous barriers prevent families from accessing vital evidence-based services. Telehealth is an emerging area of research and clinical practice, often proposed as a solution for multiple barriers to service provision. However, despite scattered promising evidence translating in-person treatments to telehealth, many treatments still lack established effectiveness in a virtual format. Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) is a traditionally in-person behavioral parenting intervention uniquely well-suited to telehealth, as during typical clinic practice the clinician is not in the clinic …

Resting-State Cerebral Perfusion Patterns: An Exploratory Factor Analysis Of Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography Clinical Data, Scott Harcourt Jan 2021

Resting-State Cerebral Perfusion Patterns: An Exploratory Factor Analysis Of Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography Clinical Data, Scott Harcourt

Theses and Dissertations

Resting-state (RS) networks (neural regions demonstrating a temporal correlation when a person is not engaged in deliberate activity) are a new topic in neuroscience and neuropsychology, not gaining significant traction in the literature until 2005. Few studies have used single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) to analyze RS. The omission is critical because SPECT RS networks have a different structure and statistical representation than functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) RS networks. Moreover, recent fMRI research has explored RS differences in persons with psychopathology but have not studied brain-behavior assessment with the potential of application of neuropsychological …

Orientation And Social Influences Matter: Revisiting Neutralization Tendencies In Information Systems Security Violation, Frank Curtis King Jan 2021

Orientation And Social Influences Matter: Revisiting Neutralization Tendencies In Information Systems Security Violation, Frank Curtis King

CCE Theses and Dissertations

It is estimated that over half of all information systems security breaches are due directly or indirectly to the poor security practices of an organization’s employees. Previous research has shown neutralization techniques as having influence on the intent to violate information security policy. In this study, we proposed an expansion of the neutralization model by including the effects of business and ethical orientation of individuals on their tendencies to neutralize and compromise with information security policy. Additionally, constructs from social influences and pressures have been integrated into this model to measure the impact on the intent to violate information security …

Investigating The User Experience With A 3d Virtual Anatomy Application, Winnyanne Kunkle Jan 2021

Investigating The User Experience With A 3d Virtual Anatomy Application, Winnyanne Kunkle

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Decreasing hours dedicated to teaching anatomy courses and declining use of human cadavers have spurred the need for innovative solutions in teaching anatomy in medical schools. Advancements in virtual reality (VR), 3D visualizations, computer graphics, and medical graphic images have enabled the development of highly interactive 3D virtual applications. Over recent years, variations of interactive systems on computer-mediated environments have been used as supplementary resource for learners. However, despite the growing sophistication of these resources for learning anatomy, studies show that students predominantly prefer traditional methods of learning and hands-on cadaver-based learning over computer-mediated platforms.

There is limited research on …

A Qualitative Examination Of Student Threat Assessment In Nassau County, New York, Christopher J. Cleary Jan 2021

A Qualitative Examination Of Student Threat Assessment In Nassau County, New York, Christopher J. Cleary

Theses and Dissertations

Law enforcement agencies and school systems face the critically important task of preventing attacks of targeted school violence and providing safe environments for students, faculty, and staff. The tragic results of past school shooting incidents have caused law enforcement agencies to work collaboratively with educators to develop strategies to reduce violent attacks.

Numerous examples from previous school shooting incidents show that shooters exhibited certain warning signs before the attack, and those signs went unaddressed. The student threat assessment process was developed to help educators and law enforcement members recognize the warning signs and take preemptive action before violence occurs. Threat …

Foresight Leadership Theory: A Grounded Theory Study Of The Conflict Management Experiences Of Healthcare Managers With Remote Employees, Desiree Nichole Van Campen

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Healthcare managers of remote employees are faced with unique challenges as they relate toconflict prevention and management. The Covid-19 pandemic further complicated this issue when, because of social distancing mandates and employee health concerns, a large volume of healthcare managers and their employees were forced to transition to a remote working environment. Managers had to then develop personal strategies to successfully lead their now- remote workforce. This qualitative Grounded Theory study revealed that intentional communication, engagement, and planning are ways in which managers have been able to minimize the effects that conflict has on their employees. From the research, the …

Effects Of Mediation On Employee Efficiency In Human Services Centers And In Other Organizations That Serve Vulnerable Populations, Mariya Mironova Jan 2021

Effects Of Mediation On Employee Efficiency In Human Services Centers And In Other Organizations That Serve Vulnerable Populations, Mariya Mironova

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Social workers and other professionals who offer caring services to vulnerable populations are oftentimes exposed to stressful environments. Employee burnout, vicarious traumas, and other stressors jeopardize worker’s efficiency. According to previously conducted research studies, organizational and interpersonal conflicts may be effectively addressed through mediation. However, the studies do not address the use of mediation for the resolution of workplace disputes in centers of human services. This study explores effects of mediation on worker’s efficiency in such centers, and this study proposes that mediation positively affects worker’s efficiency. The proposed methodology for testing this proposition involves a single case study with …

Womenwarography: A Qualitative Exploration Of Women, War, And Humanitarianism In Junction City, Kansas, Kimberly Janine Hamilton-Wright

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

There has been significant attention paid to localized humanitarianism initiatives by women military spouses in military communities. What has been missing from the discourse is the study of the intersections between military veterans and military spouses, particularly as relates to women. This study seeks to bridge the gaps in understanding the experiential intersections between women military veterans and women military spouses. Additionally, the study introduces womenwarography: the tri-fold, collective study of women, war, and humanitarianism. Thematic narrative inquiry methodology was applied to explore and comparatively analyze the experiences between eight women military veterans and eight women military spouses in Junction …

Post-Conflict Transition In Chile: Considerations For Dealing With A Resistant Armed Forces, Patrick Paterson Jan 2021

Post-Conflict Transition In Chile: Considerations For Dealing With A Resistant Armed Forces, Patrick Paterson

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Compliance and control of the Chilean armed forces, a powerful and politically influential organization, is critical to a healthy democracy in the country. The period of the transition to democracy, from the end of the 17-year military government in 1990 to the consolidation of a liberal democracy in 2010, was marked by tension and strained relations between Chilean military officers and civilian elected officials. Chilean civilian government officials – outside military circles – need to understand the reasons for military institutional resistance to identify constructive negotiation techniques. The research question is: “what negotiation techniques of civilian leaders worked best to …

An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of Black Women And White Men Towards Interracial Marriage In America, Guerdy Sauvignon Markowski

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

More than a century has passed since the United States Supreme Court made laws forbidding interracial marriage unconstitutional. The 1967 landmark case Loving v. Virginia legalized and arguably, legitimized interracial marriages and is considered as one of the most significant legal decisions of the civil rights era. Interracial marriage in The United States continues to be controversial. The opposition to black and white interracial relationships is historically positioned in the American struggle with slavery, Jim Crow laws, and white supremacy. While interracial marriages are growing more common in In the United States, many people still do not approve of them …

Identity Formation During Nonviolent Protests: A Thematic And Structural Narrative Analysis Of Interviews Conducted With March For Our Lives Protesters, Richard Shawn Queeney

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

In the spring of 2018, student protesters around the United States took to the streets and campuses of their schools to call for tighter gun control laws following the mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, FL. The highly visible nonviolent protest movement, known as the March for Our Lives (MFOL), was carried out by young people still in middle or high school and was fraught with risks that included disagreement with parents, teachers, and school administrators, detention or other penalties on their school record, and threats of violent harassment from counter protesters. MFOL protesters in and …

Risk Factors And Precursors To Police Suicide, Matthew J. Carpenter Jan 2021

Risk Factors And Precursors To Police Suicide, Matthew J. Carpenter

Theses and Dissertations

Police suicide has consistently remained a more likely cause of death for police officers than being killed in the line of duty for the past several years. Understanding the risk factors and precursors associated with suicide is crucial to changing this anomalousness. Prevention, early intervention, treatment, support, and reducing stigma, may help lower the number of police officers committing suicide.

Several research studies have found the rate of suicide for police officers to be double that of the general population (Chopko, Palmieri & Facemire, 2013; Violanti, 2010; Lewis, 2014; Charbonneau, 2000). The day-to-day job of policing may be stressful and …
