Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based approach that provides probation and parole officers with specific skills to enhance their clients' motivations to change problematic behaviors. This study investigated the outcomes of MI training with probation and parole officers whose state agency required them to complete MI training. Results show that officers' MI skills, self-efficacy, and knowledge increased following training, with some exceptions. Recommendations from implementation science literature are provided for improving MI trainings.

Meeting At The Junction: Connecting Scholarly Communication And Instruction Librarians For Learner-Centered Pedagogy With The Institutional Repository, Bebe S. Chang, Charlotte A. Barna
Staff Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia
Institutional repositories represent an intersection between academic information literacy and scholarly communication to create learner-centered librarianship (LCL). In order to position LCL, this session proposes aligning the efforts of scholarly communication and reference by incorporating IR pedagogical practices into an interdisciplinary curriculum for experiential learning.

Objectives
The tropics harbor a large part of the world's biodiversity and have a long history of human habitation. However, paleogenomics research in these climates has been constrained so far by poor ancient DNA yields. Here we compare the performance of two DNA extraction methods on ancient samples of teeth and petrous portions excavated from tropical and semi‐tropical sites in Tanzania, Mexico, and Puerto Rico (N = 12).
Materials and Methods
All samples were extracted twice, built into double‐stranded sequencing libraries, and shotgun sequenced on the Illumina HiSeq 2500. The first extraction protocol, Method D, was previously designed for …

Dental calculus (calcified dental plaque) is prevalent in archaeological skeletal collections and is a rich source of oral microbiome and host-derived ancient biomolecules. Recently, it has been proposed that dental calculus may provide a more robust environment for DNA preservation than other skeletal remains, but this has not been systematically tested. In this study, shotgun-sequenced data from paired dental calculus and dentin samples from 48 globally distributed individuals are compared using a metagenomic approach. Overall, we find DNA from dental calculus is consistently more abundant and less contaminated than DNA from dentin. The majority of DNA in dental calculus is …

Altruism presents an evolutionary paradox, as altruistic individuals are good for the group yet vulnerable to exploitation by selfish individuals. One mechanism that can effectively curtail selfishness within groups is punishment. Here, we show in an evolutionary game-theoretical model that punishment can effectively evolve and maintain high levels of altruism in the population, yet not all punishment strategies were equally virtuous. Unlike typical models of social evolution, we explicitly altered the extent to which individuals vary in their power over others, such that powerful individuals can more readily punish and escape the punishment of others. Two primary findings emerged. Under …

One out of every six American women has been the victim of a sexual assault in their lifetime. However, the DNA casework backlog continues to increase outpacing the nation's capacity since DNA evidence processing in sexual assault casework remains a bottleneck due to laborious and time‐consuming differential extraction of victim's and perpetrator's cells. Additionally, a significant amount (60–90%) of male DNA evidence may be lost with existing procedures. Here, a microfluidic method is developed that selectively captures sperm using a unique oligosaccharide sequence (Sialyl‐LewisX), a major carbohydrate ligand for sperm‐egg binding. This method is validated with forensic mock samples dating …

The Halmos College of Natural Science and Oceanography at Nova Southeastern University has been at the forefront of open accessibility and transparency of scholarly output for the institution. As one of the pioneers for the institutional repository, NSUWorks, Halmos College has been able to make great headway in creating new opportunities for the students, staff, and faculty to create and showcase their research. This presentation aims to show how the Oceanographic Campus Library has created a mutualistic relationship with administrative staff and faculty to create a cultural change in how we, as a college, operate. From subtle changes in library-managed …

Peace education scholars and practitioners continue to call for the centering of the voices and lived experiences of marginalized students (Bajaj, Ghaffar-Kucker and Desai, 2016). Situated in this urgent tradition, this presentation presents data from focus groups with young Muslim community members in S. Florida in the post-9/11 era. As a religious and ethnic minority group in South Florida, Muslim students would seem to be uniquely vulnerable in this time of rising xenophobia and Islamophobia. This particular study builds on the researcher’s prior work regarding the “school to terror pipeline” impacting France’s Muslim students (Duckworth 2016), and how teachers approach …

Although course-embedded programs (such as writing fellows, writing center fellows, or writing associates) have been examined at single institutions in terms of training, faculty support, and assessment, writing center researchers have rarely studied these programs across multiple sites. Our panel provides results from a large-scale multi-institution survey of students, faculty, and staffers in classes with course-embedded writing support programs, at four SWCA institutions that differ in terms of size and mission. This project and research results showcase the perceived value and impact of course-embedded, peer-to-peer writing support.

Objective. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if and how the Awakenings Equine Assisted Learning program was effective at improving the professionalism, confidence, communication skills and adaptability of students preparing for careers as Anesthesiologist Assistants. Background. Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is a rapidly growing experiential model that utilizes horses to enhance participants' awareness of their own non-verbal language, communication styles, projection of self-confidence and competence, and problem-solving abilities (Chandler, 2012; Green, 2012, 2013; Kane, 2012; Trotter, 2012). Methods. As a part of their regular educational and clinical rotations, first year students in the Anesthesiologist Assistant (AA) program …

This study examines the association between proximity of place of residence to preferred nightclub and substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and related problems, among a sample of 498 young adult substance users in Miami who report regular nightclub participation. Hierarchal linear models and logistic regressions were constructed to examine the impact of residential proximity to preferred nightclub on risk behaviors. Compared with participants residing in closer proximity to their preferred nightclub, participants residing further away reported higher intensities of alcohol and cocaine use (p < .01), greater condomless vaginal sex frequencies (p < .001), and more substance dependence symptoms (p < .05). Conversely, participants residing in closer proximity to their preferred nightclub had higher likelihood of arrest history (p < .05) than participants residing further away. Results suggest that participants residing further from their preferred nightclubs may be more invested in the nightclub outing and, therefore, engage in more risk behaviors.
