Hightower Collaborative Learning Center & Library at Gordon State College has secured $22,000 in grant funding from a local business and organization to enhance its Library Lending Laptop Program, which was initiated in 2023. This generous support will facilitate the expansion of resources available to students, promoting digital accessibility and fostering academic success within the community. The initiative underscores the library's commitment to bridging the technology gap and ensuring that all students have the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital learning environment.

System Migrations: Best Practices And Lessons Learned, Michelle Ganz, Laura Slavin

Two library professionals, a technical services librarian and an Archivist, describe their workflows during a system migration to OCLC Worldshare Management Systems from multiple existing systems at Lincoln Memorial University Carnegie Vincent Library. The migration was difficult at times and had some unexpected outcomes, but the end result was excellent for the students and the faculty of the university. The librarian and archivist provide suggestions to help other librarians and archivists during the process of a migration. They relate the experience to Past Perfect and Exlibris, Alma which were two system migrations they were separately involved in during later employment …

Challenges And Opportunities In Providing Academic Library Services To Incarcerated Higher Education Students: A Case Study From A Tennessee State Prison, Ryan Yoakum, Caroline Fleming

This case study describes the Belmont University Library’s partnership with a Tennessee men’s prison to provide access to higher education. The program has led to challenges relating to communication, circu-lation, cataloging, and collection development. These library services are necessary to provide students with access to information not only for their academic endeavors, but also for their own well-being and growth. This paper explores possible solutions to the information deficit of incarcerated students and how the library can support the needs of an underserved population.

Long-Term Trend Of Summer Rainfall At Selected Stations In The Republic Of Korea, Il-Kon Kim, Rafique Ahmed

The Republic of Korea (or South Korea) is located in the extreme northeastern region of the East Asian Monsoon climatic zone. Summer (June–September) is the rainy season in the country, which accounts for more than 60 percent of the annual precipitation. Using 50 years of summer (June–September) rainfall data (1951–2000) at 23 stations, this paper presents the geographic distribution of summer rainfall and its coefficient of variation in South Korea; and the long-term trend of summer rainfall at four selected stations. Summer rainfall in South Korea varies from less than 700 mm in the northeast to 800–900 mm or more …

Tourism and recreation has become one of the important and influential sectors in most of the modern economies. This sector has been accepted as one of the alternative sources of national income, employment, and foreign exchange. The state of Kuwait has many potentialities in tourism and recreation, and exploitation of this leads to more diversification of the economy besides augmenting its contribution to the GDP. The study of retail geography is moving beyond an orthodox, spatial science tradition to include a consideration of the cultural and symbolic dimensions of retailing and consumption. This paper contributes to this emerging literature by exploring the cultural politics of retail change. The entry of a large format (or “big box”) retailer into a community is conceptualized as a socially contested process open to a variety of responses from local stakeholders. In the late 1990s, a coalition composed of elected officials, private citizens, and area business and property owners contested a possible plan to locate a Wal-Mart store in Edenton, …

Pioneer Migration To The Western Fringe Of Settlement:1837–1850, H. Jason Combs

The Platte Purchase region did not become part of the state of Missouri until 1837. Prior to its annexation the area had been part of the territory reserved for Native American relocation. By 1850, the region had attracted over 40,000 pioneers from all areas of the globe. The majority of the early settlers followed the major river routes as they migrated west to the Platte region. The census data indicates that upon arrival many of these early pioneers clustered with other pioneers of similar heritage. As a result, there is a north-south settlement gradation present.
