From prairie to wheat field, the historical transformation of the Kansas landscape has been dramatic. The contributions to this transformation have been based on many factors including new grain varieties, irrigation technology, and other resource converting-space adjusting techniques. In Western Kansas in particular, with inadequate precipitation (14 to 16 inches average from AprilSeptember) for high yield intensive cropland agriculture, the structure of land transformation has been strongly influenced by the availability of water for irrigation. Since surface sources are negligible, groundwater from the Ogallala Aquifer is the critical source for irrigation water. With the dramatic increase in land area irrigated …

Traditionally universities and colleges have served as the employer of opportunity for aspiring geographers. The "baby boom generation" has graduated from the nation's universities, however, and its offspring won't make a significant numerical impact upon the hallowed halls of higher academia until late in the next decade. Demographics have dictated a contraction of the traditional employment market, and it behooves today's geography students to seek other outlets for useful application of the geographer's set of expertises. Prior to 1947, 85% of Canada's crude oil requirements were met by importing oil from foreign sources. Most of this oil came from the United States and Venezuela. The oil from the United States entered Canada by means of pipe lines to the Sarnia and Montreal areas while that shipped into the prairie provinces arrived by railroad tank car. Canada's coastal refineries, in the Maritimes and in British Columbia, received their oil by way of tankers. In all, domestic oil production in Canada in 1946 amounted to only 21,000 barrels per day, while imports exceeded 200,000 barrels per day.' This …

Preston, 1982 used informant-drawn maps to show young, well-educated Hawaiians' perceptions of language differences in the United States. Figure 4 displays one informant's response to the request to outline and label areas where people " speak differently." Figure 5 shows the technique (similar to the "bundling of isoglosses" in traditional dialect geography) which permits a composite (Figure 6) to be created.

The Nowruz Oil Spill In The Arabian Gulf: Case Study Of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah S. Ai-Amirah

The Arabian Gulf has suffered from hundreds of oil spills, some of them reported but most unreported. In many cases the amounts of the spills and their causes are usually undetermined. During 1978-1979, tanker captains reported to the Japan Oceanographic Data Center about 412 oil slicks in the Gulf and its approaches.' Table 1 shows major oil spills exceeding 3,000 barrels which occurred between August, 1980, and August, 1982. Although these are relatively current, it should be noted that other significant oil spills have occurred since oil was discovered in the region by Iran in 1908.

As development in the mountainous areas of the western United States continues to accelerate, the exposure of humans and structures to natural hazard threats from high-magnitude masswasting events also increases. This encroachment into previously uninhabited, undeveloped mountain areas creates situations whereby mass-wasting events now pose threats to human activity. Glacier National Park, Montana, is one such location where the potential exists for high-magnitude mass-wasting events. The mountains in this area commonly have steep slopes, high relief, and weathered bedrock features. These features, combined with a mid-latitude climate conducive to extensive frostweathering action, have resulted in a landscape possessing many slope …

The message in this issue is directed to my teaching colleagues, but it is also appropriate for the student body. My topic pertains to enrichment and overall maturity of our students beyond the subject matter in our geographic specialities. From a student perspective the contents of this editorial applies to those majoring in any educational pursuit. Specifically I am concerned about the development of writing and oratory skills, as well as personal and character growth. El presente artículo analiza las dinámicas de sostenibilidad ambiental en comunidades mayas del estado de Yucatán, México, enfocándose en los riesgos ambientales y las respuestas adaptativas desarrolladas frente al cambio climático. El trabajo se desarrolló en tres comunidades: Yaxunah, caracterizada por la producción artesanal y la sobreexplotación del árbol de Chaká (Bursera simaruba); Ixil, que enfrenta disputas territoriales e inundaciones recurrentes; y Sotuta, afectada por la contaminación acuífera derivada de una granja porcina en zonas aledañas. ighlights of Activities: After a very intensive recruitment program where GTU members visited Geography classes and explained the importance of GTU membership, the ZETA XI Chapter initiated six new members. The first activity of the year included a presentation by Dr. Lawrence Hoffman on his summer trip through China and the U.S.S.R. At a reception afterward, both students and faculty were able to discuss Dr. Hoffman's travels with him. In December GTU members attended the traditional Departmental Christmas Party.

During the 35-year period from 1950 through 1984, 520 tornadoes were reported and confirmed in Michigan. Slightly less than one quarter of them killed a total of 234 people, injured 3,102, and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage.' A violent tornado in Genesee County on June 8,1953, widely referred to since then as "The Flint Tornado," was responsible for 116 deaths, the greatest number of deaths by a single tornado in the entire United States that year. A fundamental technique to convey quantitative information on maps is use of symbols.' Four of the most common symbols for this purpose are circle sectors, bar segments, graduated squares and graduated circles . 2 The ability of these four symbols to communicate accurate information to map readers has been the subject of research by those interested in the cognitive process. The establishment of Adult Foster Care Facilities (AFC's) in residential areas is seen by many people as a Locally Unwanted Land Use (LULU).' Adult Foster Care is needed throughout the nation yet these structural uses often meet with community opposition. Students and teachers of Physical Geography and Climatology often find that a great deal of repetitive practice is required for one to develop the skill to identify a given climate type when presented with monthly temperature and precipitation data (e.g., Fig. 1). Of the alternate energy sources listed above, the potentially most dangerous is probably nuclear energy. The discovery of gold in California in 1848, of course, touched off the first of the western mining rushes. More importantly, its backwash led to the development of the rest of the mountain West. During the fall the Gamma Delta Chapter held a series of seminars on topics of controversial nature, such as the causes of glaciation and the extinction of the dinosaurs. The fall picnic was a well-attended success as was the Christmas banquet. During the spring term, the chapter is running a seminar on the Great Plains and is co-sponsoring, with Biology's Tri Beta and Geology's SGE, the visit of Carnegie Museum's Leonard Krishtalka, a paleontologist. The annual spring picnic is held in early May.

The average cost of single family resale housing displays geographic variation at many scales. Regional variations in the cost of housing are used in the compilation of cost-of-living indices, (Follain and Malpezzi, 1980) and have been well documented (inter alia Butler, 1980; Ozanne and Thibodeau, 1983; Blackley et aI, 1986). Geographic patterns of housing values within a metropolitan area are not as sensitive to the conditions affecting the national market, but are the result of a series of local influences (Bednarz and Wilson, 1982).
