Adjusting Cutter Numbers For Composers At The University Of Southern Mississippi Libraries, Miao Jin, Erin Boyd

In music cataloging, two primary methods are used for assigning Cutter numbers for composers. Some libraries maintain a list of composer Cutter numbers and then assign the same number to a composer in all music classes, i.e., Yale University’s Composer Cutter List at www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/music/cutter. Other libraries, including the Library of Congress, do not assign fixed Cutter numbers to individual composers, and are only consistent within single music classifications (Smiraglia 2008). There are advantages and disadvantages to the use of fixed Cutter numbers. Catalogers tend to memorize the numbers for major composers. This saves time as catalogers do not have to …

Principles of constructivist learning theory were used in developing a process-oriented approach to research skills instruction as applied to real world social problems and social policy responses. Building upon past experiences in establishing collaborative relationships with social work faculty, the theories of constructivism, Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process, and collaborative learning were incorporated into the framework of efforts to provide library instruction at important developmental phases, also known as “zones of intervention”, in student coursework involving three successive social work classes. Public relations curriculum often incorporates professional experience for progressive skill development. In the traditional public relations (PR) campaigns course, students typically research, develop, and implement a strategic campaign for a community organization as the client. Service learning is an effective pedagogical approach for the PR campaigns course with value-added learning outcomes, such as critical thinking and civic engagement. Adapting a National Society of Experiential Education (NSEE) best practices approach helps integrate service and reflection components as learning components. Fulton County Commissioners Authorize Bond Referendum

The article reports that voters in Fulton County, Georgia will vote on a $275 million bond referendum for the construction, expansion and renovation of public libraries, on November 4, 2008. These bonds, if approved, will provide funding for the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System's master plan, which includes eight new libraries, expansion of two facilities and renovation of 23 more.

Two Talking Book Centers To Merge

The article reports on the decision of the North Georgia Talking Book Center at the Cherokee Regional Library in LaFayette to merge with the Rome Subregional Library, part of the Sara Hightower Regional Library System. The North Georgia Talking Book Center will become an outreach center for its 10 county service area, while the Rome Subregional Library will give all reader's advisory and customer services, by the end of 2008.

The purpose of this project is to evaluate whether the City of Atlanta can earn revenue from the sale of its recyclable goods by changing the program’s structure and improving citizen participation. This paper examines the background of the City of Atlanta’s recycling program, along with other recycling programs in metropolitan Atlanta. The paper also compares and contrasts Atlanta’s program with cities outside of Georgia to identify best practices that may be able to be adopted by the City of Atlanta.

Giving circles are a new form of philanthropy expanding across the United States. Diverse groups of individuals pool their funds and other resources to donate to individuals and organizations in need of assistance. They provide an avenue to increase civic engagement and participation in community. The purpose of this practicum is to conduct a case study evaluating the start-up process of a small group giving circle. Observations and analyses are based on four group meetings and individual telephone interviews.

The development steps established in the literature effectively guided the start-up of this new giving circle. The group processes demonstrated democratic …
