The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act: How It Pertains To Georgia’S Libraries, Diana J. Very

The article presents information on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and discusses its significance to libraries in Georgia. The legislation, also referred as the Stimulus Public Law 111-5, is intended to create supplemental appropriations for job preservation and creation, infrastructure investment, energy efficiency and science, assistance to the unemployed, and local and state fiscal stabilization. It also discusses the challenges posed by the legislation on library administrators. It explores the funding opportunities that public libraries need to consider.

The article discusses how social networking sites can pose a danger to victims of online offensive content. Part II provides an overall analysis of the dangers the Internet, especially social networking, poses to victims. Part III reviews Section 230 of the CDA, including the “Good Samaritan” provisions for social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook. Part IV analyzes three recent court cases that demonstrate how these social networking tools are used as weapons to harm victims. A review of the course descriptions for the twelve ALA-accredited Library and Information Graduate Schools in the southeastern states identified that the majority offer only one or two elective course related to library instruction (see appendix). These courses cover topics such as curriculum design, learning theory, best practices for teaching, and information literacy strategies. Some graduate program curriculums do not offer specific courses in library instruction, instead including it as a topic in a broader course such as Academic Libraries or in conjunction with a school media specialty.

Mitchell Memorial Library recently received a sizable donation of gift journals and serials from the libraries of several agencies: Mississippi Geological Economic and Topographical Survey, Bureau of Geology in Jackson, Mississippi, and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). The impetus for the donations was the imminent move of the MDEQ. The agency library was being moved to a smaller facility, and there was no space to take everything. The core of the library is the geological library started by the Mississippi Geological Survey a century ago. The state geologist/director of the library was responsible for making decisions about what …

Although I have worked in the library profession for two years, it has taken longer to understand the phenomenon of bibliographic instruction. My pre-library school background is in education, but marrying the two disciplines has not been as easy as I first assumed. I had read a lot of helpful articles about library instruction in general, but ran across very few that were geared towards best practices and advice for new librarians. The contracting out of services, by municipalities, while not quite a new phenomenon, is still relatively new, that it provides a rich source of study for public administration scholars and students. Some of the arguments that proponents of privatization make, are that: contracting out is more efficient, that it makes it possible for municipalities to take advantage of specialized skills, which are lacking in the workforces of municipalities, and contracting permits a quicker response to new needs and facilitates experimentation with new programs, to name a few.

The purpose of this study is to provide an exploratory analysis of public resources’ allocation through online auctions. Online auctions are new ways of public resource allocation in China, but they are promising because of its broad participation and low transaction costs. In addition, compared to traditional administrative allocation mechanisms, auction methods could resolve the rent-seeking problem.
