Thank you for the kind introduction. And thank you all for having me here to speak with you and to learn from you. I am so pleased to be doing so, since the theme of your conference — real world solutions — is near and dear to me. As noted, the theme of my remarks is “Making Digital Preservation Practical.” I will highlight some ways that archives can begin a systematic program to acquire, preserve, and provide access to born-digital materials, by reflecting on my own experiences over the past few years.

Archivists have witnessed the preservation pitfalls of aging paper, videotape, and film and may wonder what the future holds for the video games of this era. Will children fifty years from now be able to play Super Mario World? More importantly, will historians lose objects that have made a significant cultural impact on the society of the late twentieth century and early twenty-first? If a variety of institutions do not take up significant preservation efforts then the games of today could slip away more quickly than one might think.

This Article consists of four parts. Part I addresses the US approach to immunity for current and former foreign heads of state as well as the related issue of foreign official immunity. Part I includes a discussion of the 2010 US Supreme Court case of Samantar, which addresses foreign official immunity. Part II explores head-of-state and official immunity under international law, including a discussion of Democratic Republic of the Congo v. Belgium decided by the International Court of Justice ("ICJ"), the Charles Taylor immunity decision of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, the ongoing case by the ICC against Sudanese …

Reappraising Leonard Rapport's "No Grandfather Clause" At Thirty, Ashby Crowder

Identifying enduring value in records is elemental to the concept of archives. Consequently, the question of reevaluating past determinations of endurance goes to the core of archival theory. Despite the substantial professional literature on the appraisal of records, relatively few archival scholars or practitioners have analyzed how and whether archivists should revisit original appraisal decisions.1 Professional organizations are only beginning to deal with the issue formally. While archivists could benefit from more professional guidance in reappraisal, the small amount of literature that does exist suggests a consensus that reappraisal, when done properly, can be a component of sound collections management.

The article provides a checklist of routine library maintenance, emergency procedures and a recommended schedules for accomplishing the tasks. It stresses the responsibility of all library staff to maintain a safe and clean facility. Library administrators are advised to devote as much time to planning for maintenance chores. Though Americans have been exposed to Asian philosophical traditions since the nineteenth century – with much recent help from the Beat writers of the 1950s and 1960s – too little attention has been paid to the texts and ideas of these traditions and to their implementation in daily life. This is especially true with regard to Buddhist ideas of ethics and karma. Compounding the problem is the commercial exploitation of Asian philosophical terms like Dharma, karma, tantra and reincarnation, which tends to impede deeper understanding of these important concepts. The Declaration Of Independence And Immigration In The United States Of America, Kenneth M. White

The United States has always been a nation of immigrants, and immigration policy has always been controversial. The history of immigration in the United States is contrasted in this article with a normative standard of naturalization (immigration policy) based on the Declaration of Independence. The current immigration debate fits within a historical pattern that pits an unrestricted right of immigration (the left) against exclusive, provincial politics (the right). Both sides are simultaneously correct and incorrect. A moderate policy on immigration is possible if the debate in the United States gets an infusion of what Thomas Paine called "common sense."

Decision-makers today respond to a security environment characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Decisions cut across a wide range of social, political and cultural domestic and global issues and demand cognitive flexibility, adaptability and the ability to make decisions “on the fly.” While the U.S. military excels in preparing its soldiers and officers for the operational demands and tactical requirements of a wide array of increasingly complex contingency missions, a number of observers have pointed to the need for teaching strategy more effectively as part of professional military education. My Own Private Library: A Peek Inside The Personal Library Of A Librarian, Ginger Williams

The article looks at the personal library of the author. As a librarian, her literary preferences are a microcosm of her diverse interests. The two best books that she read in a while are "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" by David Wroblewski and "The Last American Man" by Elizabeth Gilbert. She names four autographed books in her collection. She relates her determination to bring her copy of "Delia's Complete Illustrated Cookery Course" back home.
