The global economy offers opportunities for businesses to integrate business units and processes into seamless value-creating engines that can bring their global strength and capabilities to bear within each local market. The purpose of this paper is to suggest that proactive corporate social responsibility (CSR) by Western multinational enterprises op-erating in developing countries, such as those in Africa, not only serves to soften the Ja-nus-face of globalization but enhances their long-term economic interests as well. The last three decades have witnessed a proliferation of studies on the globalization of corruption or convergence of anticorruption strategies. These studies have been motivated by scholarly concerns from various administrative, economic, and political fields. In view of these interdisciplinary concerns, the purpose of this article is to provide a comparative analysis of corruption phenomena and the demand for public integrity because these developments pertain to the discourse on globalization issues in some South-Eastern European nations within the last decade. Teaching Government Information In Information Literacy Credit Classes, Emily Rogers

Georgia Library Quarterly

This paper reviews the teaching of credit-bearing information literacy courses and government information, reports questionnaire responses from librarians who teach these courses, and argues that revising the ways we teach government information in for-credit courses will help students achieve information literacy. A focus on government information as critical thinking and subject access resources, rather than as unique documents collections or formats, can remove barriers for researchers, particularly in classes that allow students an entire term to develop skills. Cleaning Up Dirty Politics: A Social Marketing Perspective On New Jersey's Clean Elections Program, Amy H. Handlin

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This paper reviews the outcome of a state electoral reform initiative in terms of the four-stage behavior change process used by social marketers to gauge the effectiveness of their techniques. While the Clean Elections initiative was moderately successful in its Action and Contemplation stages, the author argues that realization of its full potential could be significantly hastened by utilizing the social marketing tools of segmentation, communications research and pretesting.

Graph Matching Based Decision Support Tools For Mitigating Spread Of Infectious Diseases Like H1n1, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Kedar Sambhoos

Diseases like H1N1 can be prevented from becoming a wide spread epidemic through timely detection and containment measures. Similarity of H1N1 symptoms to any common flu and its alarming rate of spread through animals and humans complicate the deployment of such strategies. We use dynamic implementation of graph matching methods to overcome these challenges. Specifically, we formulate a mixed integer programming model (MIP) that analyzes patient symptom data available at hospitals to generate patient graph match scores. Successful matches are then used to update counters that generate alerts to the Public Health Department when the counters surpass the threshold values. …

Basketball Market Efficiency And The Big Dog Bias, Ladd Kochman, Randy Goodwin

A betting rule is devised to profit from an alleged unwillingness of strong favorites in the National Basketball Association to cover large point spreads. Imaginary wagers placed on NBA underdogs awarded 10+ points by Las Vegas oddsmakers produced a significantly nonrandom wins-to-bets ratio of 53.4 percent during the five consecutive seasons ending in 2007. The failure to generate a W/B ratio of at least 55.4 percent over the 758 games meeting our point spread constraint precludes any claim of profitability.

Whereas the values, attitudes and motivations of soldiers serving in their countries’ armed forces have been widely studied, to date we know very little about the motivations and self-conception of individuals working for the private security industry. Using data obtained through an online survey, this article explores the values, attitudes and identity of more than 200 private security contractors with law enforcement backgrounds and operational experience with a security firm in Iraq. Contrary to media dominating images of ruthless, money-grabbing mercenaries, respondents in this sample adhered to attitudes and values very similar to those of professional soldiers serving in Western …

To ascertain the use of e-books and e-book readers in academic libraries, a study was conducted by Judith Brook of Mercer University and Anne A. Salter of Oglethorpe University. The study was conducted during the period March through May of 2010. The target audience for the web based Survey Monkey study consisted of library professionals, rare book and history of the book academics, library staff and students. The term wiki, derived from the Hawaiian adjective “wiki wiki” meaning quick or fast, was coined by Ward Cunningham who created the original WikiWikiWeb for the Portland Pattern Repository (Leuf, 2001, 15). Touted by Cunningham as “the simplest online database that could possibly work” (Cunningham, 2002, June 27) “ wiki” is alternately used to refer to both a wiki website and the software used to create and maintain it and was designed to allow multiple users to collaborate in its development (Klobas 2006, 3). This study presents an analysis of 100 syllabi of creditbearing information literacy (IL) courses from colleges and universities across the United States. The objective was to determine how IL courses were being presented and taught in academic settings; how many credits were offered; the duration of the course; platform used to teach - face to face, online, or other methods; how students were graded; what types of assignments were used, and what topics were being taught and how. Three factors influence an academic library’s decision to interact with the community; a need expressed from the community, the mission of the library, and a response to a specific problem (Schneider 2003). Odum Library at Valdosta State University (VSU) developed Read Fest in response to a perceived need in the community and in support of the library’s mission. The availability of iPads and other mobile devices has provided new opportunities for communication, creativity, gaming, shopping, customer service, and more. With mobile devices surging in popularity among patrons, library innovators have started experimenting with these technologies in their services. Given the recent debut of these devices, the professional literature offers only a few studies about academic libraries that have harnessed mobile devices for reference, instruction, and outreach. In helping to expand this research, this paper presents the results of a survey of Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) reference departments about their use of mobile devices.

The Galileo Knowledge Repository (GKR) internship is designed to provide service to GKR sites needing assistance and to give students hands-on experience using a modified version of Dublin Core in a digital repository environment. The student interns work virtually from any remote location that has internet access. Selected student interns are assigned to the GKR partner institutes and work as content submitters. The National Security Personnel System was authorized at the request of Department of Defense (DOD), which complained of inflexibilities in the traditional federal General Schedule system, established under the classification Act of 1949. The department claimed that the traditional system was cumbersome even during normal peacetime operations; during wartime, when the system faced additional stresses, it was more problematic. Some of DOD’s concerns with the General Schedule system were also shared by other government agencies and officials who perceived that the system was defining jobs too narrowly and prescribing too many procedures for filling those jobs, limiting the ability of …

A new business entity designed for social entrepreneurs to embrace is gaining acceptance in a number of states, including Louisiana and North Carolina. The new entity, the low-profit limited liability company (L3C), is a byproduct of the current two options of operating, as a traditional private company or a nonprofit organization, not being an ideal fit for the entities being established by social entrepreneurs.
