This is a report of the Reference Services Interest Group (RSIG) programming held during the 2013 GaCOMO. Kristin Nielsen, Head of Reference at the University of Georgia Libraries, presented on reference desk models used at three UGA library buildings: Main, Science, and the Miller Learning Center (MLC). The report provides information about usage statistics, staffing, and training. This reports also describes changes to desks during renovations.

Optimal Allocation Of Resources In Airport Security: Profiling Vs. Screening, Aniruddha Bagchi, Jomon Paul

This model examines the role of intelligence gathering and screening in providing airport security. We analyze this problem using a game between the government and a terrorist. By investing in intelligence gathering, the government can improve the precision of its information. In contrast, screening can be used to search a passenger and thereby deter terrorist attacks. We determine the optimal allocation of resources between these two strategies wherein we model the role of intelligence using the concept of supermodular precision. One striking result is that under certain circumstances, an increase in the investment in intelligence can induce a more devious …

One of the most significant challenges to enduring family businesses is the process of passing the leadership of a firm from one generation to another. This article introduces game theory as a model for examining succession as a set of rational but interdependent choices made by individuals about a firm’s leadership. Its primary contribution is demonstrating the application of game theory to understanding the decisions and outcomes of succession events.

Private Equity Firms' Reputational Concerns And The Costs Of Debt Financing, Rongbing Huang, Jay R. Ritter, Donghang Zhang

A popular view is that private equity (PE) firms tend to expropriate other stakeholders of their portfolio companies. Bonds offered during 1992-2011 by companies after their initial public offerings (IPOs) do not reflect this view. We find that yield spreads on bonds offered by PE-backed companies are on average 70 basis points lower, holding other things constant. We also find that PE-backed companies have more conservative investment and dividend policies after bond offerings compared to non-PE-backed companies. These results suggest that PE firms’ reputational concerns dominate their wealth expropriation incentives and help their portfolio companies reduce the costs of debt.

Comparing Student Performance And Satisfaction In Face-To-Face And Hybrid Formats For A Finance Course, Patricia R. Robertson

In a study conducted at a large, public university, the author assessed the impact of course delivery method (face-to-face versus hybrid formats) on student performance and satisfaction. The study was based on the concurrent instruction of a senior-level finance course over two semesters. Student performance was based on the percent of students achieving a grade of A, B or C in the course (as opposed to D, F or W/WF) and the scores on the individual gradable assignments. The study shows no significant difference between hybrid and face-to-face delivery in the mean score of student performance. In addition, there was …

Teaching Notes for Basra: Strategic Dilemmas and Escalation of Force Options, by John Hodgson.

The events in Basra in the spring of 2003 illustrate a “hybrid” conflict with elements of conventional and unconventional warfare: humanitarian assistance, managing IDPs, security operations with multiple state and nonstate actors, all occurring simultaneously in the same geographic area and period of time. In that regard, the situation in Basra in late March and early April 2003 presented a worst-case scenario both for military commanders and civilian leadership. A potent combination of declining population growth and economic stagnation has led many citiesand metropolitan regions to rethink how to reinvigorate their communities. The Midwest is a primeexample of this trend. In 1929, the Georgia General Assembly approved a resolution calling on each county to appoint a historian to compile the county’s history for the state’s bicentennial (1732-1932). Ruth Blair, director of the state’s Department of Archives and History, worked closely with the county historians. Their correspondence tells us much about the project and about Blair’s role in the project’s success.

First discussed almost ten years ago, the processing philosophy known as “more product, less process” (MPLP) remains hotly contested among members of the archival community. Using the collection of Dr. J. Renwick Jackson as a case study, I highlight the importance of a theme heavily emphasized in Mark Greene’s and Dennis Meissner’s landmark article: flexibility. Selectively utilizing MPLP would prove useful when dealing with large quantities of semi-valuable material and metal fasteners—thereby allowing the project to be completed within 160 work hours. Simultaneously, item level processing resulted in the discovery of both significant and sensitive records, along with the elimination …

In the mid-2000s, archivists introduced a range of Web 2.0-based participatory features into digital archives to make them more accessible to patrons. Some archivists hoped the increased accessibility of digital archives would lead to the creation of virtual communities of users that would eventually participate in archival workflows, especially description. Archivists’ desire culminated in the idea of the archival commons, a network-crowd sourcing model highly dependent on intensive user participation. Users however, only minimally used digital archives’ participatory features during the mid-‘00s. Recent scholarship though, reveals that users have begun to increasingly use the participatory aspects of digital archives, suggesting …
