The value in photographs is noted "in our culture because they are inexpensive, easy to acquire, and serve as accurate, detailed records of our environment and activities" (Schmidle, 1996). But, many challenges are presented to the archivist and librarian by the discovered or donated collection of photographs because in their abundance and variety, they can surpass all other forms of information housed in institutions. For a university archives, holdings include photographs culled from manuscript collections, from individual photographers and alumni, but the majority come from in-house production. Several hundred articles have been published in the last few years on the role of the “embedded librarian” and the nature of “embedded librarianship” as well as books on the subject, e.g. Embedded Librarianship: What Every Academic Librarian Should Know (Daughtery & Russo, 2013). “The Art and Environment of Embedded Librarianship” (Saunders & Taylor, 2014) is a good example of an article examining the librarian’s role in a specific course. “Embedded librarianship” has been established as a subject heading in Library and Information Science Abstracts.

Instruction librarians sometimes face challenges in planning and implementing successful one-shot sessions for students. Librarians understand the strain of assessing student learning for the university as well as the desire to teach every student important information literacy skills. The difficulties are managing limited time, uncontrollable space, faculty collaboration, and student motivation in order to develop and achieve class goals. There are a variety of factors that can lead to student boredom or frustration with the library. This article discusses the use of online asynchronous discussion boards as a valuable tool for connecting students to leadership concepts, theories, and models in introductory leadership survey courses. Recommendations are given for designing effective discussion boards that engage students and enhance their learning. Student outcomes include construction on knowledge, relevant connections between course material and personal lives, and critical reflection.

Affordable Learning Georgia (ALG) is an initiative of the University System of Georgia (USG) to reduce the cost of textbooks for USG students. This article outlines current problems with textbook pricing, the origins of ALG within USG Library Services, current efforts and future plans for ALG, and the role of USG librarians in making required textbooks more affordable.
