Race and racial tensions have long been pressing concerns in professional athletics in the United States. Issues of race have been of particular importance to the National Basketball Association (NBA) since African Americans compromise 77 percent of the league's players. As such, this work examines the ways in which the media and the NBA responded to and managed the new generation of black players during the late 1990s and early 2000s while marketing to primarily white audiences. The Role Of Lifestyles And Routine Activities On Youth Sexual Assault And Intimate Partner Victimization, Margaret Tilley

Past research indicates that a significant proportion of youth experience sexual or intimate partner victimization (IPV) during their time in high school. Studies examining the risk-factors for victimization among this population report that youth are more likely to be victimized when they engage in behaviors such as drinking, drug use, and risky sexual practices (see Basile, Black, Simon, Arias, Brener & Saltzman, 2006). Many past studies that have examined the risk factors for victimization among this population have used the theoretical framework put forth by the routine activities theory (Cohen & Felson, 1979) and lifestyle-exposure theory (Hindelang, Gottfredson & Garofalo, …

This survey was designed to ascertain how Tennessee public four-year academic libraries were addressing unaffiliated user access to services and resources and related security issues. At one point in time, resources and services were basically limited to the material on the shelf and the personnel employed by the library. Security issues were concerned with student pranks and vandalism and, depending upon location, the issue of vagrants and/or latchkey kids. Access to the building usually meant people had access to all of the material the library had on the shelf and the only question was whether an unaffiliated user could borrow …

The Daniel Library at The Citadel hosts library events throughout the year with the expectations that engaging with students will reduce library anxiety and will create a connection between the student and the library. This article seeks to examine whether or not these purposeful efforts to interact with college students in the library are successful. A survey was administered in order to measure the impact these events have on the students’ perception of the library and the librarians.

Buy, Not Borrow: Building A Bridge To A Patron-Centric Collection - A Case Study At The University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga's Lupton Library, Melanie J. Dunn, Sarla Murgai

The Southeastern Librarian

Predicated on research demonstrating books requested through interlibrary loan that are purchased for the collection usually circulate more, cost less, and add value to the collection, Lupton Library’s Dean proposed this patron driven acquisition model. A Buy, not Borrow (BNB) pilot project was implemented at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Lupton Library in January 2010.

Bone Deterioration Due To Domesticated Rodent Scavenging, Logan N. Howard

This project examines the deterioration of bone caused by rat scavenging. Additionally, it will focus on what types of bones rats prefer when scavenging remains. The expected outcome is that the rodents will prefer the antler, with concentrated scavenging on the diaphysis due to the marrow withim the core.

The purpose for this project is to compare the markings left upon bones from rat gnawing. Knowing the effects of rat markings on remains are important when differentiating between traumatic damages and postmortem scavenging. Rat gnawing on human bones sometimes causes breakage associated with skeletal trauma, so distinguishing between the two …

The aim of this project was to determine whether visitors utilize conservation and education displays in the Living Treehouse at Zoo Atlanta. Approximately 34% of visitors read displays and watched animals on exhibit. This subset of visitors spent significantly more time watching animals than reading displays [F(1, 44) = 15.62, p < 0.001, ƞ2 = 0.26]. Limited interaction with relatively static displays may not lead to the intended change in knowledge and conservation attitudes among zoo visitors. Interactive displays (instead of static signage) separated from animal exhibits may be more effective in attracting and holding attention and delivering conservation and …

O'Keefe's (1988) theory of message design logics explains why some messages are more

persuasive than others. The first, expressive design logic, is the most basic and focuses on

expressing individual thoughts and opinions (O’Keefe, 1988). This type of message design

merely states what the persuader wants. The second, conventional design logic, appeals to

typical reasons or emotional appeals that would be suitable for any audience. The third,

rhetorical message design logic, is the most complex and sophisticated message design focusing
