Reimagining Record Groups: A Case Study And Considerations For Record Group Revision, Matt Gorzalski

The record group hierarchy at Southern Illinois University Carbondale reflects many of the problems noted by record group critics, and has evolved into a burdensome structure. This article describes how previous considerations about creating record groups have influenced revisions of the record group hierarchy at SIUC. The author does not advocate wholesale revision of a hierarchy, but only in areas where the end result creates a sensible and manageable classification system.

The use of promotional messages that resemble editorial content is a long-standing practice in advertising, occurring in all major media, from advertorials in newspapers and magazines, to infomercials on television, to, most recently, digital “native” advertising on the internet. However, we have arguably never experienced as much growth in these advertising-editorial “hybrid” messages, as they are sometimes called (Balasubramanian 1994) as we have in recent years, as their use in existing media has grown while new forms have emerged with new media.

Combining religious practices with commercial pursuits for profit is neither a novel nor an insignificant trend (Belk, Wallendorf, and Sherry 1989; McDannell 1995). Today, marketplace use of Christian symbols in secular advertising is becoming more common, especially in certain geographic locations within the United States. Christian religion-based messages and symbols regularly appear in a wide range of advertisements. The Christian elements in these ads often include Bible verses, crosses, doves, and often, the Christian fish symbol (Ichthus). Similar Christian messages are often observed in outdoor advertising, retail store signage, product packaging, and even the daily newspaper. These examples illustrate that …

Yielding To Temptation In Buying: Is It Simply A Matter Of Self-Control?, James A. Roberts, Luc Honore Petnji Yaya, Carol Gwin

Why do consumers yield to temptation? This article looks at two increasingly common types of consumer behavior: impulse buying (IB) and compulsive buying (CB). Specifically, we investigate the impact of self-control (SC), core self-evaluations (CSE), and satisfaction with life (SWL) on these enigmatic consumer behaviors. First, the article develops the distinctions and commonalities between IB and CB. Then, through evaluation of student and general adult samples, the impact of the above three variables on IB and CB is empirically tested. Findings suggest that SC does negatively impact both IB and CB but its relationship with these two behaviors varies across …

Publication Trends In Library Reserves: A Quantitative Content Analysis, Denise Dimsdale

Georgia Library Quarterly

A quantitative content analysis of abstracts on the topic of library reserves in the databases Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA), Library Literature and Information Science Index (LLI), and Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) was conducted in order to identify subtopics and research trends over time. Seven of the most frequent library reserves subtopics were identified: electronic reserves, implementation, physical reserves, evaluation, E-Reserves software, copyright, and learning management systems. Results indicate that library reserve related topics appear slowly in the early literature and begin to drop off in frequency in 2008.
