Public Finance And Tax Equity In The Arabian Gulf Monarchies, Timothy Mathews

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This study examines notions of public finance equity in the six Arabian Gulf monarchies of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Because of unique characteristics of government expenditures and revenues in these monarchies, many of the standard concepts of public finance (such as the Benefits Principle, Ability-to-Pay Principle, Vertical Equity, and Horizontal Equity) do not provide relevant insights. Consequently, four innovative notions of equity are reviewed and discussed: Within Group Horizontal Equity; Within Group Vertical Equity; Favored Group Horizontal Equity; and Favored Group Vertical Equity. This paper is a critical inquiry examining the works of an art exhibit, Geometric Aljamia: A Cultural Transliteration, hosted during Kennesaw State University’s Year of the Arabian Peninsula. It includes a brief interdisciplinary discussion of the importance of geometry to the development of Islamic art and design. The contemporary artists who produced these works under study integrate drawing and paper-cutting techniques that display characteristics of art found throughout the Muslim world.

Ottoman Arabia And The Holy Hijaz, 1516-1918, Willaim Ochsenwald

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Governments in Arabia today usually ignore the Ottoman Empire’s history in the region, but the Ottomans from 1516 to 1918 played a key role in coastal regions, especially in the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina. While Ottoman administrations intermittently ruled in Yemen and eastern Arabia, their influence was greatest in the holy Hijaz, the site of the worldwide pilgrimage. However, Ottoman rule was limited by Istanbul’s distance from Arabia. Religion played a significant role in determining the nature of Ottoman control, helping to legitimize the state among its subjects. A detailed analysis of one province, the Hijaz, with …

Our Love Won’T Fade Away: Processing The Jerry Garcia Memorial Altar Collection, Scott J. Carlson

On August 9, 1995, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead was found dead of a heart attack. Four days later, a public memorial for Garcia, held in Golden Gate Park, was attended by the band and almost 25,000 fans. Underneath an enormous portrait of Garcia, fans deposited letters, artwork, pictures, and a vast array of personal offerings in memory of the late musician. The "altar" materials, as they were called, were eventually gifted to the University of California Santa Cruz, now home of the Grateful Dead’s archives. Hoarding And Its Effects On Acquisition And Appraisal: Two Case Studies From The University Of Illinois Archives, Roxanne M. Dunn

Compulsive hoarding is characterized by the acquisition of, and failure to discard, a large number of possessions and clutter that prevents the use of living spaces as intended, and often the items acquired are unsanitary, worthless or hazardous. (Frost, Pekareva-Kochergina & Maxner, 2011) Acquiring materials from hoarders poses significant challenges to archivists who rely in part on the retention decisions of creators and collectors.

This article describes an innovative collaboration and partnership between archivists and a faculty member to enhance teaching and learning on a college campus. For archivists, instruction is often relegated to a secondary function with well-worn show-and-tell sessions that feature collection highlights. However, in a dynamic university environment, these traditional teaching methods are not sufficient for the needs of faculty in their teaching, students in their learning, or archivists seeking broader uses for their collections.

The Case Of The Stanly Will, Ryan Speer

This article presents a historical account of the state of Georgia's 1926 suit to recover a colonial will which had been an item of commerce for some 50 years at the time of the court proceedings. Ultimately, Georgia was unable to prove that the will was a state record. The state’s result can been seen as part of a larger pattern indicating that replevin is not consistently effective in recovering documents lacking conclusive evidence of long-standing public custody.

This paper developed from a grant-funded, university-based project that emulated, at least in part, the work of Nonny de la Peña. The research team uses her definition of immersive journalism as a touchstone: "[The] production of news in a form in which people can gain first-person experiences of the events or situations described in news stories" (de la Peña, et al., 2010, p. 291). Our research uses a combination of ethnographic and survey research methods.
