The Impact Of Rural Pensions In China On Labor Migration, Karen Eggleson, Ang Sun, Zhaoguo Zhan

We study the impact of China’s new rural pension program on promoting migration of labor by applying a regression discontinuity analysis to this new pension program. The results reveal a perceptible difference in labor migration among adult children whose parents are just above and below the age of pension eligibility: The adult children with a parent just attaining the pension-eligible age are more likely to be labor migrants compared with those with a parent just below the pension-eligible age. We also find that with a pension-eligible parent, the adult children are more likely to have off-farm jobs. These abrupt changes …

Negotiation is a method for people to settle differences and achieve solutions. While formal negotiations can take the forms of conflict resolutions or licensing agreement with vendor negotiations, there are many informal forms of negotiation that take place every day. Collectively, the world's population spends about 3 billion hours a week playing video games. To reach game-playing audiences of all ages, educators, including library instructors, are embracing game-based learning to engage and motivate students the same way that games do. In looking at the collective wisdom on what makes a good game, and providing concrete examples of library gaming projects, this paper discusses the best practices for creating virtual and virtual-reality hybrid games for bibliographic instruction. The Impact Of Mobile Technology On Micro And Small Enterprises In Zimbabwe In The Post-Hyperinflation Economic Era, Gamuchirai B. Perekwa, Tania Prinsloo, Jp Van Deventer

The African Journal of Information Systems

This paper investigates the impact of mobile technology on Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in the developing world in the post-hyperinflation era. Data was collected from a multi-staged sample of 114 MSE owners within the capital province of Zimbabwe, namely Harare. The data was collected and analysed using descriptive quantitative survey methods, which comprised of hard-copy questionnaires, structured interviews and online questionnaires.

The findings suggest that mobile technology has incremental, transformational and production influence on MSEs in Zimbabwe. The findings show that mobile technology amplifies communication and relations with customers, MSE’s productivity and MSE’s revenues. Mobile technology is also spurring …

The microfinance industry provides financial services to the world’s poor in hopes of moving individuals and families out of poverty. In 2013 there were 4.7 million active microfinance borrowers in Africa. This represents a smaller percentage of the population compared to other regions of the world, indicating the potential for rapid growth of microfinance in Africa. However, microfinance is maturing, in part due to the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs). This research examines how ICTs are changing the microfinance industry given recent advancements in mobile banking, Internet usage, and connectivity. Archival staff have had to adapt and take advantage of new technologies to disseminate collections to broader audiences. We will showcase four digitized archival collections from Nova Southeastern University’s Archives:

1. A chronology using the third party app, TimelineJS
2. An Archives/graduate student collaboration of “Looking Into The Past” photos using geolocational information on Google Maps
3. A donated collection of underwater slide photography with digitization and taxonomic identification efforts by staff at the NSU Oceanographic Center Library

This session will cover the basics of CrossRef membership and DOI deposits, including costs and responsibilities, DOI structure and syntax, technical requirements for manual and automated deposits, recommended workflows, and considerations for Memoranda of Understanding. Presenters will discuss the basics of XSL transformations and provide resources for preparing deposits, including sample stylesheets for journal metadata.

The following presentation offer best practices and guidelines on how to prepare your Digital Commons’ descriptive metadata to be harvested and displayed into the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).

Attendants will learn how to: 1) customize a metadata upload form in Digital Commons to display specific metadata fields, 2) choose the most appropriate schema to display metadata for particular collections, and 3) map the metadata to the appropriate BePress proprietary schema elements that can display correctly into the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) for harvesting purposes.
