Current Trends In The Planning And Development Of Northern European Collections, Richard Hacken Sep 1983

Current Trends In The Planning And Development Of Northern European Collections, Richard Hacken

Faculty Publications

Current planning and development of collections in the social sciences and humanities for German-speaking Europe, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia reflect the changing needs of research, strict budgetary limits, the prevailing publishing market in those countries, and certain innovations in library automation. Librarians responsible for supporting an area study of Northern Europe may shape the trends to their advantage by careful policy planning, by informed financial choices, by the use of data bases and resource sharing, by privately-nurtured channels of acquisition and support and by a continuing self-education program that might include participation in the activities of the CES and WESS.

Religion In Democracy: Tocqueville's Defense, Gary Novak, Kelly Patterson Jan 1983

Religion In Democracy: Tocqueville's Defense, Gary Novak, Kelly Patterson

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

It is sometimes held to be paradoxical that liberal democracy has offered no sound justification of itself. For those who are citizens of liberal democracies, and therefore are concerned not only with the regime of the fatherland but a 1 so with the good regime genus, this paradox causes not only confusion. The citizen is left a so without justification for the patros: his love of the fatherland has then no rational logos. There have been various recent attempts to provide liberal democracy with the justification necessary to survive the attack of various schools. However one assesses …

The West German Example Of Voter Turnout, Roger White Jan 1983

The West German Example Of Voter Turnout, Roger White

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

During a recent midterm congressional election I was reminded of the process that the average American citizen must go through to vote. This process began, in my case, several weeks in advance of the actual vote. First, I had to make a number of phone ca 11 s to determine where to register. Then, I was forced to take time out of my daily schedule to go down and register during their office hours. Registration was only the beginning, however, as I spent the next few weeks trying to sort through the multitude of information about the election in order …

The Matheson Coalition, Becky Snow Jan 1983

The Matheson Coalition, Becky Snow

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

In political circl~, the State of Utah is often referred to as a "hive of conservatism." Several factors seem to indicate that this reputation is well deserved. For example, recent survey data indicate that 54 percent of the voters in the state identify themselves as either strong, not so strong, or leaning Republicans--this is far above the national average of 23 percent Republican identifiers as estimated by Gallup opinion polls. Also, many political observers feel that Utah's all Republican Washington delegation currently constitutes the most conservative team in Congress. Additionally, in the Presidential Election of 1980, Jimmy Carter, the Democratic …

Select Functions Of Price, Supply, And Demand In Market And State Economies. Study Ii, Gilbert Almquist Jan 1983

Select Functions Of Price, Supply, And Demand In Market And State Economies. Study Ii, Gilbert Almquist

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

More than any other market aspect, price has the most direct linkage to supply and demand. Suppliers make product decisions according to production costs. Consumers decide their purchases after considering prices. Most prices are not set arbitrarily. Many factors must be analyzed before proper prices are applied. For this reason, the market manager must consider pricing strategies, evaluate applicable factors, set the price, predict its effect on the market, then observe the outcomes. Sometimes the outcomes are not in accord with the predictions. Prices and their effect on market supply and demand are not absolute. There are varying aspects in …

Danish Immigrant Contributions To Mainstream American Children's Literature, 1867-1983: An Overview, Karen Nelson Hoyle Jan 1983

Danish Immigrant Contributions To Mainstream American Children's Literature, 1867-1983: An Overview, Karen Nelson Hoyle

The Bridge

On the children's book scene in the United States, Hans Christian Andersen is the dominant figure among Danish authors. More than 800 translated editions of his books exist in the English language. The perennial strength of H.C. Andersen should not, however, draw attention from the notable contributions of Danish immigrants in the United States. Thirteen Danish immigrant authors and illustrators have contributed to mainstream American children's literature in the genres of picture book, historical fiction, and non-fiction from 1867 to the present. Excluded for consideration are translations from Danish, the religious press, the immigrant press, and periodical literature. Trade houses …

Jens Kjar: From Horsens To Atlantic, Signe Nielsen Betsinger

The Bridge

Of course things are coming back. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but eventually. Prosperity always has followed depression." 1 These encouraging words were spoken by Jens Kjar in Atlantic, Iowa, over twenty-five years ago to a newspaper reporter who was as intrigued by this man as I am. Who was Jens Kjar? How did I come to know about him? And why do I write about him today?

"Laegepraksis I Chicago," Brogede Minder, Morris Salmonsen Jan 1983

"Laegepraksis I Chicago," Brogede Minder, Morris Salmonsen

The Bridge

The Danish-born physician Christian Fenger, whose career was recounted by William K. Beatty in the last issue of The Bridge, was one of many Scandinavian doctors in Chicago during the boom decades one hundred years ago. In a city bursting with immigrants, some Scandinavian doctors catered to their countrymen, and had in most cases to be content with modest financial and social rewards. Others, like Fenger, affiliated with hospitals and made strong contributions to medical science of the day. By today's standards, the practice of medicine was virtually unregulated; the state of the science was in transition as research and …

Clausens On The Move: Chicago, St. Ansgar, Virginia, 1870-1873, J. R. Christianson Jan 1983

Clausens On The Move: Chicago, St. Ansgar, Virginia, 1870-1873, J. R. Christianson

The Bridge

Few Danes in America have been as influential in Scandinavian American life as Claus Laurits Clausen. From his arrival in Wisconsin in 1843 until his retirement in Minnesota more than forty years later, C. L. Clausen was a central figure in the life of Norwegians and Danes throughout the United States of America. H. Fred Swansen' s biography remains the standard work on Clausen's life in English, but an earlier biography in Danish contains important documentary material, and there are numerous biographical sketches, including a particularly sensitive one by Clausen's son-in-law, Svein Strand.

"Our Mission To The Indians": An Account Of A Danish Immigrant Church's Mission To The Cherokee Indians In 1892, John Mark Nielsen

The Bridge

On April 1, 1892, a letter by Detlev Leerskov appeared in Kirkebladet, the church newspaper of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church Association in America, otherwise known to Danish immigrants as the Blair Church. Leerskov, who had emigrated from Denmark ten years earlier, married a Cherokee woman, and settled among the Cherokee in what was then Indian Territory, wrote to tell the readers of Kirkebladet how he had received a copy of their paper from his brother in Hutchinson, Minnesota, and that this had been "the first Christian reading in the Danish language" that he had seen in ten years. Moreover, …

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler Jan 1983

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler

Theses and Dissertations

This historical/descriptive study analyzes the speaking career of Belle S. Spafford and attempts to document the relationship between her speaking and her influence with her peers. For over fifty years, the dedicated woman served as a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the National Council of Women, briding the gap between the secular and religious world of women. A rhetorical analysis of four speeches indicates the following findings: Mrs. Spafford appealed to her audiences through a focus on shared values; she had credibility because of her positions of authority and used it wisely; she effectively …

An historical study of the Church News has not been done previously. Hence, the intent of this study is to observe how the Church News has served its purposes and goals over its history. The study briefly outlines how the publication has developed and will …

A Welfare Analysis Of Production And Consumption Of Broadbeans In Egypt, B. Gardner Delworth, Adel N. Moustafa, Dyaa Abdou Jan 1983

A Welfare Analysis Of Production And Consumption Of Broadbeans In Egypt, B. Gardner Delworth, Adel N. Moustafa, Dyaa Abdou

Faculty Publications

The broadbean is one of the most important food items in Egypt and is both heavily subsidized and rationed, although the per family entitlement depends on quantities available. It is the basic staple for breakfast for most Egyptians in both rural and urban areas. The governmental policies that determine the production, marketing, and distribution of broadbeans affect consumers and producers. The government budget is also affected by the subsidy and trade policies. Thus, virtually every Egyptian is touched by policies affecting this crop and consumption commodity.

The Distribution Of Economic Rents When Irrigated Farmland Is Leased, Ray G. Huffaker, B. Gardner Delworth Jan 1983

The Distribution Of Economic Rents When Irrigated Farmland Is Leased, Ray G. Huffaker, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

Irrigation water supplied by federal reclamation projects has often been priced below its supply cost (Bureau of Reclamation, 1980, p. F-4). Pricing water below cost has been deliberate policy to stimulate irrigation development in the west. One effect of this underpricing is to add to the economic rents captured by federal water users.

The Water Outlook And Economic Development In The West, B. Delworth Gardner Jan 1983

The Water Outlook And Economic Development In The West, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

The development of water is practically synonymous with the development of the Western United States, and much of the region's wealth is tied up in the rights to utilize water. It is this relationship between water development and allocation and the creation and distribution of existing wealth that makes water policy so controversial and is the principal focus of this paper.

A Descriptive Study Of Welfare Services Audience, Allen B. Alexander Jan 1983

A Descriptive Study Of Welfare Services Audience, Allen B. Alexander

Theses and Dissertations

This study conducted an audience analysis investigating welfare attitudes for Welfare Services, a division of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The sample population consisted of 170 respondents (130 Mormons and 40 non-Mormons). The study examined three areas: (1) Where people go when in need of assistance; (2) Rights and obligations associated with assistance; (3) Attitudinal perspectives of welfare and assistance.

The findings of this study indicate that when in need, most people will …

Perceived Similarity And Value Agreement Identification With Parents Among Lds Adolescent Males, Thomas Lee Partridge Jan 1983

Perceived Similarity And Value Agreement Identification With Parents Among Lds Adolescent Males, Thomas Lee Partridge

Theses and Dissertations

Four models of parental identification (perceived similarity with father, perceived similarity with mother, agreement with important parental values and agreement with more trivial parental values) were constructed. The effects of several parenting behaviors (i.e., support, undifferentiated control, guilt and love withdrawl) as well as various structural variables upon the parental identification of a sample of LDS adolescent males were tested. Data were obtained from 565 adolescents and their parents and the data for each boy was linked with that of his parents.

Parental support and family religious and recreational activities were found to be the most reliable predictors of parental …
