The Role Of News Media Use And Demographic Characteristics In The Prediction Of Information Overload, Qihao Ji, Louisa Ha, Ulla Sypher Jan 2014

The Role Of News Media Use And Demographic Characteristics In The Prediction Of Information Overload, Qihao Ji, Louisa Ha, Ulla Sypher

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

Drawing on the information overload theory, this study investigates how news media use relates to the probability of information overload. Our broad goal is to explore how typical media use outside the working environment impacts information overload. Through a large mail survey conducted in northwest Ohio (N = 661), the study combined resident samples and college student samples and examined several variables regarding demographic characteristics, news media use, and information searching efficiency. Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the data. Results confirmed that age, gender, income, traditional news media use, and information searching efficiency can partially predict one’s probability …

Cedaw And Gender Violence: An Empirical Assessment, Neil A. Englehart Jan 2014

Cedaw And Gender Violence: An Empirical Assessment, Neil A. Englehart

Political Science Faculty Publications

Does the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) reduce violence against women? CEDAW has the distinction of being an unusually effective human rights treaty: promoting women’s political rights in particular, having a modest effect on women’s social rights, but showing little or no effect on economic rights.1 However, unlike these other rights, the CEDAW Treaty does not explicitly mention violence. The CEDAW Committee interpreted the Treaty as covering gender violence after the fact. It issued General Recommendations in 1989 and 1992 mandating states to collect information and take action on the issue, respectively.2 The …

Police Sexual Misconduct: A National Scale Study Of Arrested Officers, Philip M. Stinson, John Liederbach, Steven L. Brewer, Brooke E. Mathna

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Police sexual misconduct is often considered a hidden crime that routinely goes unreported. The current study provides an empirical data on cases of sex-related police crime at law enforcement agencies across the United States. The study identifies and describes incidents where sworn law enforcement officers were arrested for one or more sex-related crimes through a quantitative content analysis of published newspaper articles and court records. The primary news information source was the Google News search engine using 48 automated Google Alerts. Data are analyzed on 548 arrest cases in the years 2005-2007 of 398 officers employed by 328 nonfederal law …

The Biggest Winner: Using Statistics To Assess The Effectiveness Of An E-Resources Promotional Campaign, Amy Fry Jan 2014

The Biggest Winner: Using Statistics To Assess The Effectiveness Of An E-Resources Promotional Campaign, Amy Fry

University Libraries Faculty Publications

In the fall of 2011, librarians at Bowling Green State University were given the opportunity to compete for a $100 Amazon.com gift card by promoting an underused database. Usage statistics were tracked throughout the semester and compared to those for the same time period from the previous year. Eight of the twelve databases promoted rose in use. This article discusses the project methodology and uses its outcomes to assess the effectiveness of a range of marketing techniques for electronic resources, present hypotheses to account for some declines in usage, and demonstrate the value of distributed, personalized promotion for library resources.

Who Are Fans Of Facebook Fan Pages? An Electronic Word-Of-Mouth Communication Perspective, Xiao Hu, Louisa Ha, Simeng Mo, Ying Xu

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

Given its great business value and popularity, Facebook fan pages have attracted more and more attention in both industry and academia. Fans of Facebook fan pages play an important role in electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) communication. This study focused on the population of fans on Facebook fan pages and examined the differences between fans and non-fans in terms of demographics, social network sites (SNS) use, Internet use, and online shopping behaviors. The results indicated that fans used SNS more frequently than non-fans. Additionally, from the eWOM perspective, the researchers moderated product types in the model of people’s word-of-mouth (WOM) preferences and …

Quality Of Life, Health Status, And Academic Success In Undergraduates, Amanda Kuhlman Jan 2014

Quality Of Life, Health Status, And Academic Success In Undergraduates, Amanda Kuhlman

Honors Projects

Background: Undergraduates are making their first autonomous health decisions. This is an opportune stage for examining the precursors to the chronic diseases of adulthood. The purpose of this study was to examine correlations between health status, quality of life, and academic success in college students.

Methods: A quality of life survey (Goodman, 1997) was utilized to determine the behavioral difficulties of 86 first and second year college students. Each of these behavioral categories were then examined for possible correlations with blood pressure, weight, body mass index (BMI), alcohol consumption, body fat percentage, and any changes in these categories from the …

Warning! You Are About To Enter "The Friend Zone": College Students' Experiences With The Friend Zone And Perceptions Of Fictional Characters In Friend-Zone Roles, Ashley Chapman Jan 2014

Warning! You Are About To Enter "The Friend Zone": College Students' Experiences With The Friend Zone And Perceptions Of Fictional Characters In Friend-Zone Roles, Ashley Chapman

Honors Projects

People are put into “the friend zone” when they want to pursue a romantic relationship with a friend but find that their friend wants only a platonic relationship. With this research I (a) estimated the frequencies of heterosexual college students' having put an opposite-sex friend into the friend zone and having been put into the friend zone by an opposite-sex friend, (b) examined the emotions associated with these friend-zone experiences, and (c) explored college students' perceptions of characters navigating a friend-zone experience as depicted in two short video clips. Discussion focuses on results concerning the ubiquity of friend-zone experiences, the …

Ethical Decision-Making In Moral Dilemmas, Tyler Pendleton Jan 2014

Ethical Decision-Making In Moral Dilemmas, Tyler Pendleton

Honors Projects

Humans are constantly making decisions. Often times, the rules or “heuristics” that guide our decisions are not explicitly known to us simply because their formation within our mental processes is ambiguous. These heuristics can be multiply activated when concerning moral issues. Although our decisions are evident in such cases, the origins of justifying such decisions are not. It is essential to parse out the sociocultural variations that may contribute to moral decision-making. This project aims to present the findings of participants who reacted to the morally-challenging Trolley Problem. Participants were tested on one of eight conditions that examined aspects of …
