Introduction To Series And Parallel Circuits, Craig E. Shepherd, Shannon M. Smith
Introduction To Series And Parallel Circuits, Craig E. Shepherd, Shannon M. Smith
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
This lesson begins with an introduction on electricity and how it is formed at the molecular level. It then lets learners explore and define a circuit. This introduction is followed by an exploration where learners develop series and parallel circuits using LED lights and motors. Learners then consider what constitutes a series and parallel circuit, open and closed circuit, and a short circuit. The lesson concludes by having learners consider advantages, limitations, and instructional uses of various electronics kits (e.g., Snap Circuits, littleBits, LilyPad, paper circuits, conductive dough) based on their ability to display circuit paths.

The Effect Of Partisan Representation At Different Levels Of Government On Satisfaction With Democracy In The United States, Julie Vandusky-Allen, Stephen M. Utych
The Effect Of Partisan Representation At Different Levels Of Government On Satisfaction With Democracy In The United States, Julie Vandusky-Allen, Stephen M. Utych
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this paper, we analyze how variations in partisan representation across different levels of government influence Americans’ satisfaction with the democracy in the United States. We conduct two survey experiments and analyze data from the 2016 American National Election Study postelection survey. We find that Americans are the most satisfied with democracy when their most preferred party controls both the federal and their respective state governments. However, we also find that even if an individual’s least preferred party only controls one level of government, they are still more satisfied with democracy than if their most preferred party controls no levels …
Structural Power In Sustainability Transitions: Case Studies Of Energy Storage Integration Into Regional Transmission Organization Decision Processes, Stephanie Lenhart, Dalten Fox
Structural Power In Sustainability Transitions: Case Studies Of Energy Storage Integration Into Regional Transmission Organization Decision Processes, Stephanie Lenhart, Dalten Fox
CAES Energy Policy Institute Faculty Publications and Presentations
Highly technical rules for regional electricity markets shape opportunities for new technologies and the pace of transition to a cleaner and more distributed power system. We compare three case studies of regional transmission organizations and identify common mechanisms that describe the relationship between institutional design and administrative policy decisions. We compare industry actors, old and new, across these case studies to better understand structural power and institutional stability through four mechanisms drawn from the literature: (1) self-reinforcing interests, (2) participation in and position of groups, (3) influence over communication and information, and (4) control over problem framing and pace of …

The Relationship Between Witnessing Bullying, Defending Targets, And Internalizing Symptoms: An Analysis Of Gender Differences Among Sixth-Grade Students, Aida Midgett, Diana M. Doumas, Matt Peck, Amanda Winburn
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
We examined the moderating effect of gender on witnessing bullying, defending, and internalizing symptoms among sixth-grade students at one middle school in the northwestern United States. Results indicated that for females, witnessing bullying was positively associated with depressive symptoms and social anxiety, whereas for males, defending was positively associated with depressive symptoms. Findings suggest the importance of equipping female students with strategies to cope with witnessing bullying and providing male students with appropriate intervention skills for defending targets.

This list compiles literature relevant to the bourgeoning Indigenous-led conservation movement, be that through Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs, Canada), Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas (ICCAs, global), or various other forms of Indigenous-led governance or co-governance mechanisms that elevate Indigenous rights, responsibilities, and legal traditions. The introductory Colonial Conservation section is not exhaustive, but rather provides context for the main import of the collection, which is to highlight the possibilities, successes, and challenges associated with decolonizing conservation through Indigenous-led governance. The list is global in scope but has been shaped by the Indigenous Circle of Experts’ (2018) report, We …

New Research Suggests Cat And Dog ‘Moms’ And ‘Dads’ Really Are Parenting Their Pets: Here’S The Evolutionary Explanation Why, Shelly Volsche
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Have you noticed more cats riding in strollers lately? Or bumper stickers that read, “I love my granddogs”? You’re not imagining it. More people are investing serious time, money and attention in their pets.
It looks an awful lot like parenting, but of pets, not people.
Can this kind of caregiving toward animals really be considered parenting? Or is something else going on here?

Universities As Arts And Cultural Anchors: Moving Beyond Bricks And Mortar To Entrepreneurship, Workforce, And Community Development Approaches, Amanda Ashley, Leslie Durham
Universities As Arts And Cultural Anchors: Moving Beyond Bricks And Mortar To Entrepreneurship, Workforce, And Community Development Approaches, Amanda Ashley, Leslie Durham
Urban Studies and Community Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
Economic developers refer to universities as anchor institutions because they are rooted regional economic drivers that are sites for development, incubation, entrepreneurship, workforce training, and knowledge transfer. Most anchor research speaks generally about the university or focuses on STEM. Our study asks: to what extent are public universities arts and cultural anchors? Through a comparative case analysis supplemented with interviews of field innovators and a translation of transdisciplinary literature, we deepen the anchor concept, and we propose a conceptual assessment tool. Our applied research helps universities move from being an arts patron to an arts entrepreneur, investor, innovator, and catalyst.

Weed Infestation: A Service Learning Capstone Project, Catherine T. Clemens
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Infestation of weeds can be most upsetting to anyone who finds themselves dealing with them. Whether they are in your garden, lawn, or you pass by them thinking they are a pretty flower, weeds definitely make their appearance in most places. For ranchers, weeds can take a huge toll on them and their operation. Since I live on a ranch it was only fit for me to create a project that would not only benefit myself and other ranchers in the Harney County community. My project was about the importance of weed control. It is a huge part of ranching …

There is a need for skilled interpreters to meet the needs of the increasingly diverse communities. Many get into the field of interpretation and translation in order to assist those with language barriers, as well as earn a living for themselves. The interpreters get into the field not realizing that to succeed they also need an entrepreneurial spirit. These entrepreneurial linguists are classified as independent contractors, as such they are responsible for the business aspects of their livelihood. This includes marketing themselves in order to grow their client base. Marketing can be a daunting task in itself. In speaking with …
Feminine Hygiene Kits For Girls/Women Worldwide, Deseret Lauree Lazarte
Feminine Hygiene Kits For Girls/Women Worldwide, Deseret Lauree Lazarte
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Through research and personal experience I found that there is a disparity for girls and women throughout the world when it comes to a natural occurrence for females, called menstruation. For the sake of brevity, I will use the general term “girls” though I mean to include women, also. In many countries girls don’t understand this monthly feminine process and don’t have the proper equipment to use. In many countries girls are taught wives’ tales on why women menstruate. Because of this they perpetuate the falsehoods to their girls and this leads to insecurities and shame. They also do not …

Intervention Programs Targeting High-School Retention Rates, Genevive C. Poynter
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Intervention programs greatly impact the retention rate of high school students. Characteristics of students who drop out of high school can be assessed and provide necessary information to assist in implementing intervention programs that target those same characteristics, improving retention rates of at-risk students. “A large body of research indicates that students from particular backgrounds or who possess particular characteristics are more likely to drop out than others.” (Stanley & Plucker, 2008, 1) Students must feel like they belong, having solid relationships within their community, school, teachers, and peers. Students must feel that their education is relevant in one or …
