Political Assortive Mating: The Effects Of Politics On Mating Choice And Relationships, Kathryn Block Feb 2020

Political Assortive Mating: The Effects Of Politics On Mating Choice And Relationships, Kathryn Block

Augsburg Honors Review

The current study investigates the theory of political assortative mating, which is the theory that people with similar political preferences are more likely to mate together. The current study broadens the research on political assortative mating by studying potential couples before they actually begin dating, rather than studying married couples as most previous research has done. Participants were asked to look at a fictitious dating profile in which political affiliation was manipulated and rate how likely they would be to contact, respond, and be a good match with the person represented. Results showed that politics do have a significant impact …

Determining Variables That Explain Share Of Gdp Spent On Healthcare In Advanced Economies, Katie Barr Feb 2020

Determining Variables That Explain Share Of Gdp Spent On Healthcare In Advanced Economies, Katie Barr

Augsburg Honors Review

Healthcare expenditure has been increasing in the United States alone since at least 1997 but economists have been trying to determine the factors that affect spending levels long before then. The most widely researched factors include: income, population, technology and wellness. There is a lack of agreement on which variable best describes the changes and levels of healthcare spending. The purpose of this research is to use SPSS software to run an OLS regression and analyze the impact of the four most commonly researched variables of healthcare spending to determine which affects expenditure the most. Insight into this topic could …

New Perspectives On Catholic And Democratic Voting Behavior Regarding Constitutional Same-Sex Marriage Bans, Tré Martinez-Kukowski Feb 2020

New Perspectives On Catholic And Democratic Voting Behavior Regarding Constitutional Same-Sex Marriage Bans, Tré Martinez-Kukowski

Augsburg Honors Review

In the United States, constitutional same-sex marriage bans were a prominent political phenomenon in state and national politics for most of the 2000s, and were ballot items as recently as 2012. Traditionally, this has been addressed as it correlates to Republican party politics and the evangelical Protestant voting bloc, with some attention paid to the opposition to these measures by Democrats. In addition, Catholic voting is viewed as essentially a barometer of the general electorate, not only on this issue but on all issues other than reproductive rights. However, most of this research came out in response to the wave …

The Glass Is Always Half Empty: Anm Analysis Of The Negative Worldviews For Those With Atxiety And Depression, Bradley Marcy

Augsburg Honors Review

Since it was first proposed by Leon Festinger in the 1950s, cognitive dissonance theory has been the subject of many research papers. Explorations have expanded the theory to provide further insight into the conditions required for this phenomenon to occur, how it can be observed, and how it affects judgment. Cognitive dissonance has also proved useful in creating new ways to treat various mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety. The success of this type of therapy implies that there may be a stronger connection between these two topics that are often discussed apart from each other. This paper will …

Confined Identity: Reexamining Total Institutions, Amber Kalina Feb 2020

Confined Identity: Reexamining Total Institutions, Amber Kalina

Augsburg Honors Review

Social life has great impact on the identity formation of groups and individuals. It is from society that people receive validation for the identities they wish to convey. Typically, individuals have freedom to adopt multiple identities, for different social contexts demand different behaviors. However, there are some places where individuals are restricted to one common identity by authorities. Erving Goffman defines such a location as a total institution. Although Goffman's theory adequately describes the circumstances in the asylum he observed, it is not as applicable to other cases that should theoretically match Goffman's description. This article will address the problem …

The Heterogeneity And Wide Range Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Nikki Johnson Feb 2020

The Heterogeneity And Wide Range Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Nikki Johnson

Augsburg Honors Review

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is one of the most prevalent childhood neurological disorders in the US (Pinel et a1.,2011). Individuals with this disorder experience a varying degree of lower capacity for social interaction and communication. There are two important characteristics of ASD, its heterogeneity and its range of disorders on a wide spectrum, which must be kept in mind as research is performed on this topic. This complexity of ASD and its large amount of individual variation, based on the intensity, behaviors, and types of disorders a person has, makes it difficult to uncover the pathophysiology of these neurological disorders. …

The Influence Of Rap In The Arab Spring, Samantha Cantrall Feb 2020

The Influence Of Rap In The Arab Spring, Samantha Cantrall

Augsburg Honors Review

Throughout history, music has been influential in social, religious, and political disputes. In the early 21st century, change in the established order can be found in expressing the need for reform halfway around the world in the Middle East's Arab Spring. Rap artists such as El General (Tunisia), GAB (Libya), and Omar Offendum (Syria) used their talents to both spark and encourage protestors during the early days of the Middle Eastern protests that began in late 2010; these protests have since been coined "The Arab Spring." The energy that could have been used to wield guns and bombs was instead …

Swiping More, Committing Less: Unraveling The Links Among Dating App Use, Dating App Success, And Intention To Commit Infidelity, Cassandra Alexopoulos, Elisabeth Timmermans, Jenna Mcnallie Jan 2020

Swiping More, Committing Less: Unraveling The Links Among Dating App Use, Dating App Success, And Intention To Commit Infidelity, Cassandra Alexopoulos, Elisabeth Timmermans, Jenna Mcnallie

Faculty Authored Articles

The present study was conducted to explore the cognitive processes linking people's perceptions of their mobile dating app experience and their intention to commit infidelity. Three hundred and ninety-five participants were recruited through a U.S. based university (44.6%) and MTurk (55.4%). Our results indicate that people's perceived success on a dating app was positively associated with their intention to commit infidelity through self-perceived desirability, and negatively associated with their intention to commit infidelity through perceived amount of available partners. These findings are discussed in light of theories of relational investment.

Assessment Of Bias In Police Lineups., Nancy K. Steblay, Gary L. Wells Jan 2020

Assessment Of Bias In Police Lineups., Nancy K. Steblay, Gary L. Wells

Faculty Authored Articles

Materials from five extant field studies were analyzed to determine the level of structural bias in police lineups. Depending on the jurisdiction, between 33% and 68% of lineups sampled from 1,548 real police lineups scored as suspect-biased using mock-witness proportion score. The suspect did not draw a fair portion of mock-witness picks in 20% of field lineups (reverse-biased lineups). Lineup fairness measures revealed that a point estimate (mean) for a set of lineups can mask significant problems in lineup construction and that any single lineup should not be assumed to be fair based on an aggregate score. A sample of …

The Tea Party: Burgeoning Or Beaten?, Philip Olsen, Alexa Robinson Jul 2019

The Tea Party: Burgeoning Or Beaten?, Philip Olsen, Alexa Robinson

Augsburg Honors Review

The Tea Party is a grassroots political movement which has gained a considerable following since its inception in 2009.Its platform centers on a single issue -- greater fiscal responsibility and conservatism on the part of each respective level of government. In this paper we examine the question of whether or not the Tea Party will develop into a viable political entity. We concluded early on in the process of researching this paper that extensive statistical analysis would only be a fruitless endeavor because of the contemporaneity of the Tea Party movement. Any figures we might choose to use stood the …

Life As Game: A Theory Elaboration, Scott Hemann Jun 2019

Life As Game: A Theory Elaboration, Scott Hemann

Augsburg Honors Review

Throughout history, individuals and groups have attempted to manage how they are seen in the public eye. People usually play interaction games with their audiences in order to make themselves appear more positive and desirable. Some cases, however, include individuals or groups who do not want to fit in, and who do not want to appear desirable. This analysis examines Goffman's theory of impression management with the metaphor, ltfe as game. The theory is applied to two cases of differing orgatizational level-an individual, Malmard James Keenan, and a large, complex organization, the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Theory elaboration is an …

Speech We Hate: An Argument For The Cessation Of International Pressure On Japan To Strengthen Its Anti-Child Pornography Laws, Alison Rapp Jun 2019

Speech We Hate: An Argument For The Cessation Of International Pressure On Japan To Strengthen Its Anti-Child Pornography Laws, Alison Rapp

Augsburg Honors Review

One can hardly mention child pornography, even as a subject of serious academic research, without receiving questioning, fearful, or even disgusted looks. The creation, dissemination, and possession of child pornography is severely criminalized in many countries, and continues to be a topic of intense controversy in countries that have "lagged" in passing laws condemning the trade (though the word "trade" is misleading, as most child pornography is created, disseminated, and consumed almost entirely free of charge). Yet, there is also a great deal of confusion, misunderstanding, and sheer ignorance surrounding child pornogaphy and its connections (or lack thereof) to lowered …

Augsburg Honors Review

Highland Park, Michigan, is a city rich with twentieth century history, from the automobile revolution of Henry Ford to the historic landmarks that early immigrants created in wake of the elusive and lucrative American Dream. However, Highland Park is a city today that is characterized by extreme poverty, unemployment, and crime. The City of Highland Park District project is a sociological approach to the study of a selected inner city district in the United States, which was the City of Highland Park, Michigan. This research study is comprised of two sections of detailed analysis regarding the effects of inner city …

Examining Online Communities Through Wicca, Kathryn Lawson May 2019

Examining Online Communities Through Wicca, Kathryn Lawson

Augsburg Honors Review

Wicca (or Witchcraft) is one particular religion that has benefitted from the members' ability to utilize the communications of the Internet for networking with other Wiccans, sharing religious information and experience, and even conducting online rituals. However, this spread of Wiccan resources on the Internet has fueled the debate among people of many faiths over whether or not religious ceremonies and gatherings online qualify as a substitute for assembling in person. Herein resides the controversy which I will address by taking a closer look at the Wiccan cofltmunity on the Internet and exploring the differing viewpoints of this topic.

Humanitarian Intervention: Exploring The Number Of Ctvilian Casualties In Confiict Zones Where Peace-Enforcement Missions And Peace Keeping Mission Have Been Utilized, Konye Obaji Ori

Augsburg Honors Review

The UN peacekeepers-the Blue Berets-form one of the largest, best equipped, and international forces in the world. Yet the organization's history is strewn with examples of its inability to keep the peace in places such as Srebrenica in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur. Currently there are UN peacekeeping operations running in 16 different locations throughout five continents from Haiti to Timor, and 120 countries contribute 100,000 troops who are paid out of the UN's annual budget of $7.1 billion. But the UN forces lack the authority to impose themselves on the fighters. This study explores whether there is a need to …

The Rhetoric Of Public Support And The Foundations Of Educaiion In Montana, Micah Everson May 2019

The Rhetoric Of Public Support And The Foundations Of Educaiion In Montana, Micah Everson

Augsburg Honors Review

In 2005, the Supreme Court of Montana presented its final and unanimous opinion in the case of Columbia Falls Elem. School Dist. No. 6 v. State. A public coalition thus forced the state to acknowledge problems in its educational system and to work to- wards fixing them. This public interest in education in Montana is not a recent phenomenon.

Is Charismatic Leadership More Influentiai, In Societal Or Organizational Settings, Anna Kessler May 2019

Is Charismatic Leadership More Influentiai, In Societal Or Organizational Settings, Anna Kessler

Augsburg Honors Review

It is important to contrast charismatic leadership in the political-societal context with that in organizational settings to gain knowledge about the relative strengths and weaknesses of each of them. Regardless of the feasibility and validity of this comparison, it can be stated that the influence of to- day's large corporations is continually growing, also substantially affecting international politics and society as a whole. Hence, taking the increasing interconnectivity of nations and corporations into account, it is important to examine the similarities and differences of visionary leadership in both contexts in order to draw conclusions about their most successful application, which …

Prospects For Justice And Accountability In Syria, Alexis Staubus May 2019

Prospects For Justice And Accountability In Syria, Alexis Staubus

Augsburg Honors Review

In recent years, the international community has closely monitored the actions of Syrian president, Bashar-al Assad. Since the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, President Assad has continued to incite widespread violence throughout Syria by committing mass atrocities that violate international laws. There is evidence to provide proof of President Assad’s connection to his crimes and that his crimes have killed and displaced millions of Syrians. However, the legalities of indicting a head of state and the special interests between the members of the United Nations Security Council create obstacles that make prosecuting President Assad near impossible in …

School-To-Prison Pipeline And Its Infestation In Black And Brown Communities, Sofia Goetz May 2019

School-To-Prison Pipeline And Its Infestation In Black And Brown Communities, Sofia Goetz

Augsburg Honors Review

In the United States there is the belief that a quality education, and education as a whole, is child’s ticket to a prosperous and successful life. It was Thomas Jefferson who went as far as to say that it is incredibly important to “Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty”.1 Jefferson’s belief about the United States was meant to extend into the future, but this moral value and commitment was never extended to low income communities, and especially communities of color - almost as if the privilege …

The Effect Of Lineup Size On Eyewitness Accuracy, Alyssa Baumann May 2019

The Effect Of Lineup Size On Eyewitness Accuracy, Alyssa Baumann

Augsburg Honors Review

The research investigated the impact of the number of members in a police lineup on eyewitness identification. Participants attempted to identify the perpetrator from either a sequential or simultaneous lineup. The number of members in the lineup differed between 6 members and 12 members, simultaneous or sequential lineup presentation, and target-present or target-absent. In the target-present condition, the research was concerned with correct identifications. Thus, the 6 member simultaneous lineup should yield the most correct identifications. The 12 member simultaneous lineup should yield the second highest. The 6 and 12 member sequential lineup presentation should yield fewer correct identifications because …

Charicteristics Of Total Institutions In The Merry Pranksters And Augsburg College: A Goffmanian Analysis, Matt Dunn May 2019

Charicteristics Of Total Institutions In The Merry Pranksters And Augsburg College: A Goffmanian Analysis, Matt Dunn

Augsburg Honors Review

Ken Kesey's classic novel One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest recounts the experiences of R.P. McMurphy, a criminal sentenced to time in a mental hospital. Kesey's illustration of the mental hospital provides the stereotypical view of "institutions." However, many other areas of life go unnoticed as institutions, such as schools or even families or close-knit groups of friends. Despite general unawareness of the extent of institutions, institutions have direct consequences for the identities of individuals that exist within them. In this analysis I will first outline Goffman's theory of total institutions focusing on the general characteristics of total institutions, the …

Moral Injury Among Professionals In K–12 Education, Erin Sugrue

Faculty Authored Articles

This article presents the quantitative portion of a mixed methods study of moral injury among professionals in K–12 public education. Using a cross-sectional correlational survey design, 218 licensed K–12 professionals from 68 schools in one urban school district in the Midwest completed an on-line survey that included measures of moral injury and emotional and behavioral correlates. The K–12 professionals exhibited levels of moral injury similar to those experienced by military veterans. Correlational analyses found that experiences of moral injury were associated with feelings of guilt, troubled conscience, burnout, and the intention to leave one’s job. Linear regression analyses demonstrated that …

Understanding The Effect Of Moral Transgressions In The Helping Professions: In Search Of Conceptual Clarity, Erin Sugrue Mar 2019

Understanding The Effect Of Moral Transgressions In The Helping Professions: In Search Of Conceptual Clarity, Erin Sugrue

Faculty Authored Articles

There is a vast academic literature on the moral dimensions and ethical dilemmas of what are commonly referred to as the helping professions (e.g., nursing, medicine, social work, counseling, teaching). Over the past several decades, increasing attention has been paid to the issue of moral transgressions perpetrated, witnessed, or experienced by these professionals and their accompanying psychological and social outcomes. Scholars seeking to understand moral transgressions and their effects have proposed and examined a variety of constructs, including moral distress, demoralization, and moral injury. This article examines to what extent constructs related to moral transgressions and their …

Intercultural Humility In Social Work Education, Bibiana Koh, Anthony A. Bibus Iii Jan 2019

Intercultural Humility In Social Work Education, Bibiana Koh, Anthony A. Bibus Iii

Faculty Authored Articles

This conceptual study draws from social work, education, psychology, and moral philosophy (i.e., virtue and Confucian ethics) to inform our conceptual definition of intercultural humility (ICH) with five interrelated features. Starting with cultural humility in the context of the Educational Policies and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) for Baccalaureate and Master’s Social Work Programs of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE, 2015), we examined conceptualizations of humility and cultural humility as virtues required for ethical social work practice. Implications for social work education are discussed by outlining rationales and strategies for developing each ICH feature.

Results show that variables such as number of Google searches, number of years on contract left, community valuation of a player, number of goals and assists, and race of a player significantly influence the transfer fee paid for a player. …

Organizational Deviance: The Case Of The Baltimore City Detention Center, Jaz Vallin Dec 2018

Organizational Deviance: The Case Of The Baltimore City Detention Center, Jaz Vallin

Augsburg Honors Review

This paper analyzes the causes that led to the federal indictment of thirteen female guards, and eventual conviction of forty guards and inmates, at the Baltimore City Detention Center in 2013. The analysis is based on information presented in extensive newspaper coverage during and after the discovery of the events and the behavior at the jail. While popular opinion in the press blamed the guards’ gender or their personal morals for their actions, the incident can best be explained through the use of organizational heuristic tools. Application of Diane Vaughan’s matrix of routine nonconformity reveals that the guards’ actions involved …

A Community Under Attack: The Foundations And Development Of Islamism In London, Katherine Pye Dec 2018

A Community Under Attack: The Foundations And Development Of Islamism In London, Katherine Pye

Augsburg Honors Review

For nearly two decades, Islamic radicalization and the growth and development of global Islamism has dominated public media and policymaking discourse in Europe and America. Faced with terrorist attacks perpetrated by “home-grown” radicals, in Britain and across Europe and America, countering Islamic extremism from within has become a national and international priority. Hence, an understanding of what motivates some Muslims living in the west to reject so-called “western values” has been key. In the UK, government programs such as Prevent have sought, not uncontroversially, to identify “extremism” within communities before it becomes violent (Home Office 2011). Yet, overlooked in this …

A ‘Bad Fit’ For ‘Our’ Kids: Politics, Identity, Race And Power In Parental Discourse On Educational Programming & Child Well-Being, Erin P. Sugrue Oct 2018

A ‘Bad Fit’ For ‘Our’ Kids: Politics, Identity, Race And Power In Parental Discourse On Educational Programming & Child Well-Being, Erin P. Sugrue

Faculty Authored Articles

Issues of race and class have long been at the center of discourses involving the American public education system. Although contemporary discourse regarding issues of race and power in American schools may be less overt in racist ideology than in previous decades, the impact of coded racist discourse can be equally powerful and dangerous. A need exists to identify racist and classist discourse in educational contexts so that the ideologies and practices these discourses reflect can be challenged. This paper uses critical discourse analysis and Critical Race Theory to examine how the discourses of race, class, and power are enacted …

Finding The Fit: Job Crafting As A Leadership Tool, Paul R. Johnson May 2018

Finding The Fit: Job Crafting As A Leadership Tool, Paul R. Johnson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Too many people go their entire lives in jobs that aren't quite the right fit. In fact, currently 70% of the American workforce is disengaged, a symptom of people feeling like the position or career they are in is not right for them. Some people end up switching jobs or careers multiple times throughout their life, while others may remain in a job they dislike. The focus of my research was to look at a third possible solution for unhappy workers: job crafting. By giving workers the freedom to add new tasks or alter existing ones, expand or contract their …
