To Read And Be Read: When Monopolists Control Access To Prestige, Ted C. Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

Publishing in an established academic journal of high prestige gives high rewards in terms of salary and promotion for authors and prestige for their universities. Established for-profit journals with strong reputations can expect to collect
large rents for these reputations in terms either of subscription prices for gated articles or author publication fees for open access articles. This paper takes a look at this situation.

It’S Still About Race: Peremptory Challenge Use On Black Prospective Jurors, Whitney Decamp, Elise Decamp Dec 2018

It’S Still About Race: Peremptory Challenge Use On Black Prospective Jurors, Whitney Decamp, Elise Decamp

Whitney DeCamp

Objectives: The use of race as a motive for excluding individuals from serving on juries in American criminal trials is unconstitutional. Nevertheless, black individuals remain substantially more likely than others to be removed during jury selection through peremptory challenges. This study tests whether and to what extent there is a racial effect on peremptory challenge use by the prosecution or the defense.

Methods: Using data from 2,542 venire members in Mississippi, propensity score matching is used to examine racial differences in jury selection by comparing black venire members to similarly situated white venire member counterparts.

Results: Findings suggest that black …

Solidarity Economy Lawyering, Renee Hatcher Dec 2018

Solidarity Economy Lawyering, Renee Hatcher

Renee Hatcher

This Essay explores lawyering in the solidarity economy movement as an emergent approach to progressive transactional lawyering. Solidarity economy is a set of value-driven theories and practices that seeks to transform the global economy into a just economy that centers the needs of people and the planet. While the solidarity economy movement in other parts of the world has been established for several decades, the solidarity economy movement in the United States emerged in 2007. Over the last decade the movement has grown and gained significant momentum, with the rise of solidarity economy organizations and initiatives, as well as the …

The Gender Of Trafficking, Kerwin A. Kaye Dec 2018

The Gender Of Trafficking, Kerwin A. Kaye

Kerwin Kaye

The exclusion of male victims from discussions of sex trafficking is pervasive. Here I detail the discursive dichotomisation of this framework, examining not only why men and boys have historically been excluded as victims of sexual trafficking, but also how this discourse acts as a gendered and gendering formation more generally. Following this I critically examine the recent turn toward the inclusion of boys as victims of DMST ("Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking"), arguing that the ‘sex trafficking’ frame is less useful – and more harmful – than it may appear.

The Rabbits Of Okunoshima: How Feral Rabbits Alter Space, Create Relationships, And Communicate With People And Each Other, Margo Demello

Margo DeMello, PhD

When I was first invited to the Text, Animals, Environments conference, I assumed that I was invited by accident. What do I know about animal or environmental poetics? I am an anthropologist, not a literary scholar. But it turns out, after educating myself about zoopoetics and ecopoetics, that I might have something to contribute to the field. In particular, I thought that I might write on a topic that I have been working on for the past two years: a large group of feral rabbits living on an island off the southern coast of Japan’s main island, Okunoshima.

Do You Believe In Ghost Apartments?, Michael Lewyn Dec 2018

Do You Believe In Ghost Apartments?, Michael Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

According to the popular press, expensive cities are being overrun by "ghost apartments"- condominiums owned by wealthy foreigners, but used as investments rather than being rented out to local residents. This article points out that such apartments are in fact a very small percentage of housing supply, even in some cities that are supposedly overran with such condos.

More importantly, the existence of new “ghost apartments” does not justify exclusionary zoning policies. If a city popular with foreign investors discourages construction of new housing, investors are likely to purchase older housing units, outbidding local residents for those units. In this …

Participatory Methods And Community-Engaged Practices For Collecting, Presenting And Representing Cultural Memory, Margo Shea Dec 2018

Participatory Methods And Community-Engaged Practices For Collecting, Presenting And Representing Cultural Memory, Margo Shea

Margo Shea

The socially constructed nature of memory and the well-documented ties between place and memory make collaborative and participatory research methodologies particularly significant to scholarship in memory studies, place attachment and place-making. This chapter explores how participatory research methodologies combined with digital tools, including participatory project design, crowdsourcing, participatory community mapping and community curation can render more visible the individual and social functions of cultural memory to researchers and participants in collaborative projects. Participatory methods contribute to our understanding of memory’s role in place-making by making visible performances of memory that simultaneously honor individual representations and narratives, construct intimate publics and …

Disaster Risk Reduction And Climate Adaptation In Latin America’S Informal Urban Settlements: An Ecological Approach, Juan Pablo Sarmiento, Meenakshi Jerath Dec 2018

Disaster Risk Reduction And Climate Adaptation In Latin America’S Informal Urban Settlements: An Ecological Approach, Juan Pablo Sarmiento, Meenakshi Jerath

Juan Pablo Sarmiento

In 2015, the Peruvian Center for Disaster Studies and Prevention (PREDES) began an afforestation activity on the slopes of Independencia, one of 43 districts in Lima, Peru. The activity was conceived as part of an urban disaster risk reduction (DRR) project in informal settlements called the Neighborhood Approach, with support from the United States Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/ OFDA). The concept has evolved as an integrated, multi-sectoral analytical framework centered on the geographic confines of neighborhoods to address disaster risks in urban settings through community planning. The participatory process and framework flexibility of the …

Comparing The Characteristics Of Bicycle Trips Between Endomondo, Google Maps, And Mapquest, Angela Schirck-Matthews, Hartwig Hochmair, Dariia Strelnikova, Levente Juhasz Dec 2018

Comparing The Characteristics Of Bicycle Trips Between Endomondo, Google Maps, And Mapquest, Angela Schirck-Matthews, Hartwig Hochmair, Dariia Strelnikova, Levente Juhasz

Levente Juhasz

Numerous online trip planners, such as Google Maps and MapQuest, offer trip recommendations for cycling among other transportation modes. Whereas these platforms are widely used, little is known about the routing criteria embedded into their routing algorithms, and, more specifically, how recommended trips differ from routes travelled by cyclists. This study uses GPS tracking data from the Endomondo bicycle app to extract bicycle trips in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It compares Endomondo trip characteristics to the characteristics of bicycle trips obtained from Google Maps and MapQuest and the corresponding shortest path. Results highlight the attributes relating to road usage along a …

Getting A Second Chance With A University Education: Barriers & Opportunities, Jeffrey Ian Ross Ph.D. Dec 2018

Getting A Second Chance With A University Education: Barriers & Opportunities, Jeffrey Ian Ross Ph.D.

Jeffrey Ian Ross Ph.D.

As part of the prisoner reentry process, many formerly incarcerated individuals are choosing to enroll in universities to earn bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Some cannot immediately begin their studies and must take remedial classes. Others, because of preparations they have done before release, can start classes on the first day of school. The following paper poses and attempts to answer six interrelated questions connected to excons taking classes at universities, the challenges they encounter, and ways to smooth the process for the universities in general and faculty, staff, administrators, and other students in particular.

Effective Communication In Public Services In A Diverse Language And Cultural Landscape: A Challenge For Teaching And Training., John R. Fisher, Halil Asllani

Dr. John R. Fisher

Constantly changing global events impact local policing and emergency services personnel in their roles as guarantors of safety and security. This paper extends research originally completed in the United States and compares the results with findings from Kosovo police. Police in both Kosovo and Utah (in the United States) serve minority populations. In Utah, the population that was once homogeneous is now very diverse. The population in Kosovo is becoming more and more homogeneous, but with some unique challenges for police and other public safety agencies. In Utah, these population changes have occurred because the state has become a magnet …

As part of the open government movement, an increasing number of 311 call centers have made their datasets available to the public. Studies have found that 311 request patterns are associated with personal attributes and living conditions. Most of these studies used New York City 311 data. In this study, we use 311 data from the City of Miami, a smaller local government, as a case study. This study contributes to digital government research
and practices by making suggestions on best practices regarding the use of big data analytics on 311 data. In addition, we discuss limitations of 311 data …

Government agencies collect large amounts of structured and unstructured data. Although these data can be used to improve services as well as policy processes, it is not always clear how to analyze the data and how to glean insights for policy making, especially when the data includes large volumes of unstructured text data. This article reports opinions found in “We the People” petition data using topic modeling and visual analytics. It provides an assessment of the usability of the visual analytics results for policy making based on interviews with data professionals and policy makers. We found that visual analytics have …

Outsider Ethnic Minorities And Wage Determination In China, Andrew Macdonald, Reza Hasmath Dec 2018

Outsider Ethnic Minorities And Wage Determination In China, Andrew Macdonald, Reza Hasmath

Reza Hasmath

The literature on ethnic minorities in China has a significant puzzle: in some studies, urban minorities perceive lower wages relative to the majority Han, while in other studies there is little to no evidence of this wage gap. There is not a clear theoretical expectation as to how these findings could simultaneously be true suggesting that new theory-building is necessary. We propose that the primary issue, and a potential solution, is the failure to fully disaggregate ethnic minority groups’ labour market experiences. We leverage a new, large dataset solely looking at ethnic minorities in China to explore this divergence. Our …

Interstate Licensure Portability: Logistics And Barriers For Professional Counselors, Anna Elliott, Lynn Bohecker, Gregory Elliott, Bethany J. Townsend, Veronica Johnson, Anna Lopez, Elizabeth D. Horn, Ken Roach

Lynn Bohecker

Counseling licensure portability is in a state of crisis. The collaborative 20/20 initiative made headway in establishing the profession’s objectives toward consistent licensure standards across states; however, inconsistencies and significant barriers persist. The authors conducted a qualitative content analysis to understand the logistics associated with interstate portability of counseling licenses in the Rocky Mountain Region of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming). Results describe participants’ experiences in fulfilling licensure requirements and the barriers encountered because of discrepancies in practice standards. Recommendations for counselors, supervisors, and state licensing boards are described.

Pedagogical Perspectives On Counselor Education: An Autoethnographic Experience Of Doctoral Student Development, Anna Elliott, Beronica Salazar, Brittany L. Dennis, Lynn Bohecker, Tiffany Nielson, Kirsten Lamantia, David M. Kleist Dec 2018

Pedagogical Perspectives On Counselor Education: An Autoethnographic Experience Of Doctoral Student Development, Anna Elliott, Beronica Salazar, Brittany L. Dennis, Lynn Bohecker, Tiffany Nielson, Kirsten Lamantia, David M. Kleist

Lynn Bohecker

There is minimal literature related to understanding what training factors
contribute to the development of qualified counselor educators. Specifically,
we wondered if counselor education doctoral students are effectively prepared
for their roles as instructors. We chose an autoethnographic phenomenology
method as a means for exploring the experiences of doctoral students’
pedagogical development in a doctoral instructional theory course. We sought
to understand the essence of our experience through written reflection,
photography, and group reflective processes. Analysis revealed the value we
all obtained through the instructional theory course, experiential learning,
and self-reflection, which contributed to increased self-efficacy as emerging
counselor educators. …

Sectumsempra: An Analysis Of The Heroic Transformation Of Severus Snape, Jake C. Cardwell Dec 2018

Sectumsempra: An Analysis Of The Heroic Transformation Of Severus Snape, Jake C. Cardwell

Scott T. Allison

This chapter seeks to examine the character Severus Snape and his heroism. I will go about this task by analyzing Snape’s life and legacy, and judging him through several lenses of heroism science. Most importantly, the goal of this discussion is to determine whether or not Snape is truly a “hero.” Whether you love him or hate him, Severus Snape is one of the most recognizable literary characters of the twenty-first century, and his morality and merits are still talked about by fans of the Harry Potter franchise. I will use traditional archetypes and theories of heroism science to determine …
