Can Irreversibility Explain The Slow Diffusion Of Energy Saving Technologies? (With Kevin Hassett), Gilbert E. Metcalf
Can Irreversibility Explain The Slow Diffusion Of Energy Saving Technologies? (With Kevin Hassett), Gilbert E. Metcalf
Gilbert E. Metcalf
A model was developed on the effects of irreversibility on home improvement behavior. It is also considered whether it may be helpful in shedding light on the slow diffusion of new energy technologies. This work has been criticized for being of little value in studying the high discount rates applied by consumers to home-improvement purchases. It is proven that the model can generate predicted hurdle rates as high as those estimated in the literature, and thus solve the energy paradox.
Specification Testing In Panel Data With Instrumental Variables, Gilbert E. Metcalf
Specification Testing In Panel Data With Instrumental Variables, Gilbert E. Metcalf
Gilbert E. Metcalf
I show that specification tests for correlated fixed effects developed by Hausman and Taylor extend in an analogous way to panel data sets with endogenous regressors. Given panel data, different sets of instrumental variables can be used to construct the test. For a simple class of models, the test in many cases is asymptotically more efficient if an incomplete set of instruments is used. However, in small samples one may do better using the complete set of instruments. Monte Carlo results demonstrate the likely gains for different assumptions about the degree of between and within variance in the data.

Attitudes To The Right: Evaluative Processing Is Associated With Lateralized Late Positive Event-Related Brain Potentials, John T. Cacioppo, Stephen L. Crites, Wendy L. Gardner
Stephen L Crites Jr.
The authors recently developed a paradigm to investigate the evaluative categorization stage of attitudes using event-related brain potentials (ERPs). The present series of 5 studies with a total of 118 Ss extended this approach by analyzing the spatial topography of the ERP over the lateral scalp region to address complementary questions regarding the nature of operations underlying the evaluative categorization stage of attitude processing. Consistent with the hypothesis that evaluative categorizations engage mechanisms associated with hedonic or global language processing, results revealed that the standardized amplitudes of the late positive potential of the ERP during evaluative categorization were larger over …

Technological Specialization And Economic Performance In Oecd Countries, Mario Pianta, Valentina Meliciani
Technological Specialization And Economic Performance In Oecd Countries, Mario Pianta, Valentina Meliciani
Mario Pianta
The paper investigates the growing sectoral specialization in technological activities of OECD countries (measured using patent data) and its impact on countries' innovative and economic performance in the 1975-1990 period. Aggregate indicators of sectoral specialization are introduced, showing the extent to which countries concentrate their innovations in few fields, or spread them across several sectors. A general positive relationship is found between the degree of specialization in technology and higher rates of growth, while specialization in electronics-related fields is not associated to better economic or technological performances. The position of individual countries in these patterns is also examined, showing that …
Measuring Technological Change Through Patents And Innovation Surveys, Mario Pianta, Daniele Archibugi
Measuring Technological Change Through Patents And Innovation Surveys, Mario Pianta, Daniele Archibugi
Mario Pianta
This article provides an overview of recent research using innovation surveys and patent data as indicators of technological activity. The conceptual and methodological problems of 'measuring' technology are discussed, with a classification of the types of information which can be drawn from patent databases and from surveys of both innovations and the innovative efforts of firms. The findings and the methodological strengths and weaknesses of such studies are reviewed, considering first the evidence at the firm level, second the analysis of the industrial structure and finally the evidence at the country level and the process of globalization. The overview shows …

Electrocortical Differentiation Of Evaluative And Nonevaluative Categorizations, Stephen L. Crites, John T. Cacioppo
Electrocortical Differentiation Of Evaluative And Nonevaluative Categorizations, Stephen L. Crites, John T. Cacioppo
Stephen L Crites Jr.
The evaluative categorizations that underlie affective and attitudinal judgments have often been equated with nonevaluative categorizations despite the central importance of evaluative processes for survival. In the present experiment, a late positive potential (LPP) of the event-related brain potential elicited when participants evaluatively categorized food items as positive or nonpositive was compared with the LPP elicited when participants semantically (i.e., nonevaluatively) categorized food items as vegetable or nonvegetable. Results revealed that evaluative categorizations evoked an LPP that was relatively larger over the right than the left scalp regions compared with the LPP evoked by nonevaluative categorizations. This finding provides evidence …
Coming Out Of The Closet: Young Gay Men's Experiences In The Process Of Coming Out, Ronald Macdonald
Coming Out Of The Closet: Young Gay Men's Experiences In The Process Of Coming Out, Ronald Macdonald
Dr. Ronald Macdonald
Coming out of the closet is a decision that all young gay men consider, however there has been little recent research undertaken which investigates this phenomenon.
The purpose of this qualitative study is to provide an account of young men’s experiences in the process of coming out and a critical analysis of the influences of cultural, political and social factors which impinge on the process. A phenomenological method (utilising Colaizzi’s procedural steps) will be employed to collect data and to extrapolate common themes and meanings. A purposeful sample of seven young gay men were interviewed. Data was collected from taped …

Addressing Equity In Alberta, John R. Fisher, Moshe Elhav
Addressing Equity In Alberta, John R. Fisher, Moshe Elhav
Dr. John R. Fisher
This paper provides a historical review of equity in funding education in Alberta. It describes government attempts to address fiscal inequities and shows how the introduction of full funding in 1994 addressed many of the equity problems in Alberta. Horizontal equity has improved. However, the province needs to consider ways to improve vertical equity--the need for different amounts of funding to meet different needs--and other inequities affecting student achievement and access to knowledge.
Purchasing Power Parity, Unit Roots And Dynamic Structure, Douglas G. Steigerwald
Purchasing Power Parity, Unit Roots And Dynamic Structure, Douglas G. Steigerwald
Douglas G. Steigerwald
Recent studies of puchasing power parity (PPP) account for the possible presence of unit roots in nominal exchange rates and relative price indicies by applying standard unit-root tests to real exchange rates, which are ratios of nominal exchange rates and relative price indicies. These studies occasionally find evidence of PPP but, as a whole, the evidence is not definitive. Standard unit-root tests impose a restrictive dynamic structure between nominal exchange rates and relative price indicies. I specify and estimate a generalized dynamic structure. I reject the dynamic restrictions implicit in standard unit-root tests of PPP, and find stronger evidence of …

Characteristics Of The Effective Therapist: Further Analyses Of The Nimh Tdcrp, Sidney J. Blatt, Charles A. Sanislow, David C. Zuroff, Paul A. Pilkonis
Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.
Analyses of the data of the National Institute of Mental Health-sponsored Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program have primarily examined the effects of types of treatment and patient characteristics on outcome, but scant attention has been directed toward evaluating the contributions of the therapist. With an aggregate of residualized therapeutic change scores of the 5 primary outcome measures for each patient at termination as an overall measure of improvement, an average therapeutic effectiveness measure was derived for each of the 28 therapists based on the outcome of the patients they saw in active treatment. The distribution of the therapists was …
