Humane Education Of The Next Generation Of Americans, Stuart Westerlund Jan 1966

Humane Education Of The Next Generation Of Americans, Stuart Westerlund

Education Collection

In the process of education, three major aspects stand out sharply: philosophy, psychology, and evaluation. It is through philosophy of education that we establish goals and objectives. In other words, where are we going? What do we want? What is really important? Without a philosophy we wander aimlessly in the vast desert known as "no man's land." Psychology speaks of methodology, the means whereby we might achieve our goals; it is the instrument by which we hope to achieve our objectives. Without a methodology we are like a ship without a rudder. We may know where we want to go, …

The Education Of The Whole Man, Ralph Borsodi

School of Living Documents

The Education of the Whole Man is essentially two books in one volume. The first is a general treatise. This book opens with a challenge to Borsodi’s Indian friends. They must choose a national destiny: Gandhi or Western industrialization. The second section addresses the problem of education in 30 chapters. There are many forms of education: Physical education, emotional education, perceptual education, introspection education, axiological education, volitional education, etc. But these are not different things. They are part of a whole. There are stages of development, from infancy through age twelve, sixteen, eighteen, higher education, adult education. Chapter by chapter …

Education And Living: Volume 1, Ralph Borsodi

School of Living Documents

In Education and Living, a two-volume work, Borsodi elaborated the model of the School of Living. Most of volume one consists of a critique of “mis-education.” Most of that critique focuses on the problems of centralization; centralization of industry, the economy, politics and education. The second volume of Education and Living explains Borsodi’s vision of achieving decentralization in detail. The second volume is in two parts: Right-Education and Re-Education. It explains how to educate for the “Normal” human being and for achieving the “Normal” way of living. This is not the “normal” of the bell curve, the average of a …

Experimental Results Of Training In General Semantics Upon Intellingence-Test Scores, Joseph C. Trainor

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

The theory of General Semantics in its present (1935) form is essentially that there exists in the human nervous system a general mechanism, somewhat similar in nature of concept to that type of functioning which we have been calling vaguely, intelligence. In distinction, however, to the commonly held views on intelligence, General Semantics implies that this mechanism is exceedingly amenable to environmental influences; that it may, in other words, show marked effects of training in Semantic methods.

To this end a group of thirty sophomores in the Washington State Normal School at Ellensburg, Washington, were given the Detroit Intelligence Test, …

The world situation of this last year, continued depression with its termination more than ever in the indefinite future, together with the threat of an outbreak of war which existed for a time, is the most direct challenge our system of education has ever had. Gerard Swope, president of the General Electric Company, has proposed a plan for industry. The American Federation of Labor and the United States Chamber of Commerce each present plans to stabilize business and employment. Why are educators contributing …
