An Introduction To The Akawaio And Arekuna Peoples, Walter F. Edwards, Amerindian Languages Project, University Of Guyana

English Faculty Research Publications

The present monograph focusses on the Akawaio and Arekuna tribes who inhabit the Upper Mazaruni area of Guyana. We have tried in this effort to provide the kind of basic cultural and linguistic information about Akawaios and Arekunas that non-Amerindian people including teachers, administrators and employers should find valuable and we have tried to present these ideas in as non-technical a style as possible. Section II of this work is devoted to lists of words which we think would help Coastlanders and other non-Amerindians to begin to interact socially with Akawaios and Arekunas. In the early chapters we have presented …

Role Of The Publisher In The Dissemination Of Knowledge, Gordon B. Neavill

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

Transmission of intellectual works from their producers to consume Intellectual works can be disseminated in various ways. In nonliterate societies, the only means by which constructs of words and ideas can be disseminated is recitation, either by itself or coupled with performance. With the advent of writing, these constructs can be recorded and disseminated in physical form. Publication, involving the reproduction of recorded works in multiple copies and the distribution of these copies to consumers, becomes in literate societies a major mode of the dissemination of knowledge. The publisher has three basic functions in this process: he decides, by assessing both …

Role Of The Publisher In The Dissemination Of Knowledge, Gordon B. Neavill

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

In literate societies, publication is a major mode of the dissemination of knowledge. Far from being a neutral middleman in this process, the publisher influences both the production and consumption of intellectual works. The publisher forms an important part of the institutional setting in which authorship takes place. By commis- sioning authors to write some works, and through his influence at the editorial stage, the publisher influences the content of what is written. The publisher acts as a gatekeeper, determining which works will be made avail- able to the public. He oversees the reproduction of works in multiple copies, determining …

The history of industrial and personnel psychology contains a large amount of literature of the investigations made of personal traits and characteristics, individual differences, and of the psychological tests which measure these factors. More recently personnel and industrial psychologists have become interested in other phases of research. The employee in industry has increasingly become the focal point in investigations and discussions and at present personnel interrelationships and the dynamics of the working situations are attracting the attention of a number of psychologists. This shift in interest has brought with it new emphasis in the literature.

The study to be presented …
