Mafia And Globalization: The Consequences Of Economic Integration Without Legal Symmetry, Benjamin White
Mafia And Globalization: The Consequences Of Economic Integration Without Legal Symmetry, Benjamin White
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This project will examine the relationship between mafia and globalization through the lenses of two case studies, focusing on the Calabrian criminal organization known as ‘Ndrangheta. The first case study revolves around the Port of Gioia Tauro, which serves as the drug trafficking hub of ‘Ndrangheta and is emblematic of the overall trends in global commercial traffic and security deficits. The purpose of this case study is to demonstrate how ‘Ndrangheta exploits the advanced economic integration that began in the 1990s and continues to exist in the gap between frantic commercial activity and limited government oversight. This case study begins …
Under Strain: A Robust Russian Foreign Posture Despite Limitations, Chiara Sutton
Under Strain: A Robust Russian Foreign Posture Despite Limitations, Chiara Sutton
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The geopolitical maneuverability held by the Russian Federation has been considered to be intrinsically connected to the prices of hydrocarbons, as roughly half of the government’s budget derives from hydrocarbon revenues. The year 2008, with oil prices flitting above $150 per barrel, was a particular boon for the Kremlin and its international significance- incidentally, 2008 also oversaw the Russo-Georgian war and the start of that now-frozen conflict. In the quite different current climate, as hydrocarbon prices stay remarkably collapsed for the third year, the Kremlin’s revenue problems are compounded by international sanctions and a level of international mistrust still rippling …
Comparing U.S. And French Approaches To Counterterrorism In Africa, Alexa Audino
Comparing U.S. And French Approaches To Counterterrorism In Africa, Alexa Audino
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Although terrorism is typically associated, in the U.S., with the Middle East, there is also a significant presence of terrorist groups in Africa. Both the United States and France are involved in counterterrorism in the Sahel region, where the two states often work together. However, the strategies of the U.S. and France in this region also frequently diverge. This project analyzes the differences in the strategies taken by France and the United States in counterterrorism interventions in the Sahel, specifically studying the ways in which these two countries are fighting Boko Haram, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, and Al-Shabab. …
Drag: Spectacle,Transformance, And The Construction Of Gender Utopia, Tyler J. Henry
Drag: Spectacle,Transformance, And The Construction Of Gender Utopia, Tyler J. Henry
Undergraduate Honors Theses
We live in a world of constant performance. Simultaneously being performer and audience, we navigate every day situated in the suspension of disbelief due to society’s spectacle. We are continuously enacting, evaluating, providing feedback, and adjusting in order to perform just well enough to be accepted into mainstream society. Gender is often understood and constructed in rigid binaries where performing too much or too little can lead to exclusion from acceptance into society. However, there are some who purposefully perform in order to criticize the binaries and cultivate an area of limbo between masculine and feminine. I am referring to …
Considerations For Mexican Immigration Policy Reform: How Motivations To Migrate Align With U.S. And Mexican Macroeconomic Conditions, Alix Naugler
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The nationalistic rhetoric adopted by the newly-elected president’s administration along with the public’s climaxing anti-immigrant hysteria has recently forced Mexican immigration intervention to the top of the U.S. agenda. Misconceptions regarding Mexicans’ role in stealing jobs, threatening cultural and ethnic traditions, and straining public welfare, educational, and healthcare resources have spurred a fear among the American people. This politically-fabricated “schizophrenia” has ceased the political and economic collaboration between the two nations and has resulted in the unilateral militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border. In this evaluation of the U.S. government’s immigration policies, the proposed economic theories related to Mexicans’ motivations in …
The Abcs Of Aba: Comparing Consequence Preferences For Maladaptive Behavior In Children On The Autism Spectrum, Alyssa A. Serceki
The Abcs Of Aba: Comparing Consequence Preferences For Maladaptive Behavior In Children On The Autism Spectrum, Alyssa A. Serceki
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, is a common therapeutic technique that has been implemented since the 1960s as a method of teaching appropriate social and functional behaviors to children on the Autism Spectrum and related disorders. ABA focuses on altering behavior by controlling the Antecedents and Consequences related to the targeted Behavior. ABA is only implemented by trained practitioners, who select from a variety of Consequence options when determining how to modify a given child’s Behavior. Because ABA is rooted in Behavioral Psychology and techniques of learning theory, it is possible that Psychological education may play a role in the …
The Effect Of Integration: A Study On The Impact Of Diversity On Economic Indicators, Luke H. Schleier
The Effect Of Integration: A Study On The Impact Of Diversity On Economic Indicators, Luke H. Schleier
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper examines the effect of diversity, measured by the dissimilarity index, on the economic strength of an area. Economic strength is measured using five economic indicators: median home value, median income, median gross rent, percentage of people with health insurance, and firms per capita. The work aims to show that there is a positive economic impact due to integrating and creating communities that are more diverse. Previous work shows there is a positive impact of diversity on economic indicators such as wages, rents, and production but previous studies do not look at the effect on these economic indicators. This …
Millennials As Consumers: Can Businesses Survive As Is?, Ashley N. Genoese
Millennials As Consumers: Can Businesses Survive As Is?, Ashley N. Genoese
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Each generation brings new challenges in which businesses must change their operations, marketing strategies, and other key factors of their company. With Millennials being the most unique generation, businesses will not only have to change all of these tactics, but might even run the risk of becoming irrelevant to this next generation. Also known as Generation Y, Millennials are classified as those born between the years 1981 – 2000, and in 2016 the current ages of Millennials are 16-35, but more typically identified as those ages 19-30 in the year 2016. Born and raised in the era of booming technology …
Factors Affecting Climate Change Mitigation Policy Implementation, Kelly M. Anderson
Factors Affecting Climate Change Mitigation Policy Implementation, Kelly M. Anderson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Why do some states have policies that aggressively reduce carbon emissions, while others ignore the threat of climate change? In a world where increasingly extreme weather patterns threaten food production and species extinction, and where rising sea levels and frequent storms damage coastal infrastructure, it is now essential for states to mitigate these effects.
My paper analyzes the role of media attention on climate change and environmental association membership rates on the most recent climate change mitigation policies of South Africa, the United States, and Germany. It argues that media and environmental associations influence a population’s desire to reduce carbon …

Academic Freedom, Public Art, & Private Universities: Examining The Expression Of Communication At Usd, Ivy M. Guild
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This present case study explores how language styles and power distance led to miscommunication between an administrator and student via computer mediated communication. Email exchanges were examined using textual analysis between an administrator and an undergraduate student. Results indicate high-context and low-context communication and power distance roles led to problematic actions and decisions. Furthermore, divergent speech with regard to communication styles was an additional problematic. Implications of the results specific examples of how this interaction could have been prevented were discussed.
Educational Donations And Inequality In The San Diego Unified School District, Jesse O'Sullivan
Educational Donations And Inequality In The San Diego Unified School District, Jesse O'Sullivan
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Local educational foundations (LEFs) are nonprofit organizations affiliated with a school or a district that raise money on their behalf. Broadly speaking, these nonprofits are seen as philanthropic organizations that benefit the public. My research seeks to complicate this perception by contextualizing donations to schools in an unequal school system, and examine how donations from these foundations interact with this inequality. This research seeks to investigate whether LEFs benefit the schools in least need of assistance, that is, those with high test scores and white, middle or upper class students, thereby perpetuating the already existing inequalities. LEFs may also mask …
Connecting The Dots: How Iot Is Going To Revolutionize The Digital Marketing Landscape For Millennials, Chloe E. Spilotro
Connecting The Dots: How Iot Is Going To Revolutionize The Digital Marketing Landscape For Millennials, Chloe E. Spilotro
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The growing phenomenon of the Internet of Things (IoT), which is that any item capable of being connected to the Internet will be, presents an unprecedented opportunity for businesses. Using an extensive literature review, the current research examines the significant shift in marketing strategies that need to take place to target the millennial generation of as they adopt IoT. Most research defines the Millennial generation as those born from the early 1980s to the early 2000s. As individuals in this generation grow older, there are two behavioral implications: 1) their acceptance of technology suggests they will be quick to adopt …
The California S.T.E.P. Act: Prosecuting Fraternities As Criminal Street Gangs, Courtney Lee Spears
The California S.T.E.P. Act: Prosecuting Fraternities As Criminal Street Gangs, Courtney Lee Spears
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis project examines the similarities in structure, initiation processes, af liations, and motivations for joining both criminal street gangs and fraternities. These similarities serve as the foundation for the central idea of the thesis: using California’s street gang legislation, mainly the S.T.E.P. Act, to more severely prosecute fraternities for their crimes. My application of the legislation is supported through both comprehensive gang data, as well as case studies of fraternity crimes, as comprehensive data for this group does not exist. My research has important implications, as recent legislation serves to protect fraternity offenders from facing punishment for their crimes, …
The Suitability Of Habitats And The Effects Of Human Activities In Osupuko And Olepolos Wildlife Sanctuaries On Maasai Giraffes, Sydney P. Davis
The Suitability Of Habitats And The Effects Of Human Activities In Osupuko And Olepolos Wildlife Sanctuaries On Maasai Giraffes, Sydney P. Davis
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Habitat quality and resource availability within wildlife dispersal areas in the Amboseli ecosystem are experiencing degradation due to pastoralism and agriculture by humans, which negatively affects the wildlife species that utilize these dispersal areas. Maasai giraffes are a common species that utilize these areas, but information on how human activities and the presence of domestic livestock affects the Maasai giraffe is limited. This study was conducted in two wildlife sanctuaries: Osupuko and Olepolos. Habitat condition assessment was done to determine the quality of habitats found within each sanctuary. The Point-Centered Quadrat Method was used to determine the number of five …
Environmental Social Activism In The San Diego-Tijuana Transborder Region, Christina M. Hirt
Environmental Social Activism In The San Diego-Tijuana Transborder Region, Christina M. Hirt
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper examines the obstacles and opportunities social activists face when attempting to fight environmental injustices in the San Diego-Tijuana transborder region. The study undertakes a case study of the Environmental Health Coalition (EHC) - the leading environmental justice organization in the region, which operates on both sides of the US-Mexico Border. The analyses conclude that despite a strong rhetoric of binationalism employed throughout border activists’ campaigns, the strategies that are utilized on the ground have been vastly local and short-term in focus. While activist organizations like the EHC demonstrate a keen awareness of the binational implications of environmental injustices …
Shaky Foundations: The Tradeoff Between Structural Safety And Financial Security, Grace Daly
Shaky Foundations: The Tradeoff Between Structural Safety And Financial Security, Grace Daly
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper investigates the relationship between the financial positions of a subcontractor and their performance on the construction site. Financial default by a subcontractor can cost general contractors additional time and expense, as they try to find replacements and keep the projects on schedule. This highlights the importance of vetting subcontractors before awarding a bid. This study attempts to bridge the gap between the subjective nature of construction quality and the more technical financial analysis in determining the overall quality of subcontractors. Safety measures are also incorporated into performance ratings. Data is collected for the years 2009 through 2014 from …
Investigating Sleep Behaviors In Autistic Infants, Alanna R. Flynn
Investigating Sleep Behaviors In Autistic Infants, Alanna R. Flynn
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is defined by social, emotional, and learning deficits. Past research suggests that ASD and sleep problems often co-occur. The goal of this research was to investigate sleeping behaviors in autistic infants in comparison to typically developing infants (TD). The data of this study has been acquired at the University of California San Diego Autism Center of Excellence. One main goal of this center is to identify early indicators of ASD in infants (1-3 years of age), which could lead to earlier treatment and better therapy techniques. The current study used a sleep questionnaire to compare parent-reported …
The International Criminal Court In Crisis: Is Local Outreach The Route To Stability?, Taylor J. Kilpatrick
The International Criminal Court In Crisis: Is Local Outreach The Route To Stability?, Taylor J. Kilpatrick
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The International Criminal Court is at the forefront of the international transitional justice realm today. Despite its omnipresence, there is a seemingly ceaseless succession of arguments against the Court. As this disapproval abounds, it effectively obscures the specific issues at hand. The strain on the interaction between global and local levels of justice within the scope of the ICC arguably underscores the entire crisis situation. More specifically, there is a seemingly unbridgeable distance, both physical and cultural, between the entity of the ICC and the local communities it purportedly serves. This paper seeks to address the absence of local narratives …
Drug Violence And Public (In)Security: Mexico's Federal Police And Human Rights Abuse, Dominic Pera
Drug Violence And Public (In)Security: Mexico's Federal Police And Human Rights Abuse, Dominic Pera
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Violence in Mexico, with dramatic political, social, and economic consequences on both Mexican and US populations, has risen dramatically in the past decade. Research has shown that the Mexican military is largely responsible for human rights abuses in Mexico. This paper will seek to answer why there are so many human rights abuses committed by the Federal Police, as public security is a police role and its deterioration threatens lives, security, and the rule of law. This paper will look at what scholars have said about the causes of police violence and public insecurity. Some say that history is responsible, …
Personality And Happiness, Brianna L. Kirkpatrick
Personality And Happiness, Brianna L. Kirkpatrick
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The connection between personality, emotions, and experience have been of interest to researchers for many years. The present study was designed to assess the specific connection between personality, happiness, and happiness inducing behaviors (HIB) within individuals. This study also extends previous research by assessing whether any or all of these variables were connected to the recommendations an individual would make to improve the mood of a hypothetical other. The data from 424 university students were analyzed to determine the relationship between self-reported extraversion and neuroticism and self-reported affect, engagement in HIB, and the recommendations provided. The results revealed the expected …
Exploratory Study Of Parent's Perceptions Of Their Preschooler's Screen Media Usage, Lara Adamiak
Exploratory Study Of Parent's Perceptions Of Their Preschooler's Screen Media Usage, Lara Adamiak
Undergraduate Honors Theses
There are conflicting research findings and evidence about the value of technology in children’s development. Although the short- and long-term effects are still being investigated, the overall trend is that the contributions of technology to children’s development depend on numerous factors. Among these factors are whether children’s caregivers make informed choices about technology use, whether they monitor children’s technology use, and whether they successfully minimize technology’s overuse. Through the use of a Qualtrics survey, this study investigated parent’s knowledge of the media use recommendations of the 2013 American Academy of Pediatrics Policy Statement regarding children’s screen media use, parent’s beliefs …
