Understanding Reproductive Health Among Burmese Refugees In Greeley, Colorado: An Ethnographic Account, Alexandra Julia Krumtum

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

In the past four years, over 1,000 Burmese refugees have settled in Greeley, Colorado, but little is known about their conceptualizations of health or their experiences with local medical institutions. This paper investigates Burmese refugee women’s reproductive health beliefs and interactions with biomedical professionals. Through ethnographic interviews and participant observation, I show that a lack of mutual understanding between the two groups contributes to issues in communication and difficulties in promoting medical care. Medical anthropological research shows that culture has important implications for the experience and outcome of illness, as well as for the utilization of medical services and likelihood …

Dancing Again: History, Memory, And Activism At Wounded Knee, Owen Volzke

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

This study examines the role history and memory played in the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee by Oglala protestors. The research demonstrates that a historical and memorial understanding of Lakota culture and relationship with the United States played a critical role in the identity protestors consciously sought to create for themselves. In particular, the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 and the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 were key events legitimizing the struggle of Oglala protestors seeking an improvement in their living conditions. Furthermore, Oglala protestors cultivated the resurrection of a Lakota culture long suppressed within the Pine Ridge Reservation, with …

Censorship In History Textbooks: How Knowledge Of The Past Is Being Constructed In Schools, Tyler Brunner

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Pressure groups organized around political correctness and religious conservatism lead textbook publishers to self-censor. Such self-censorship ultimately results in dry, unenlightening textbooks. Lifeless material draws education away from more developed forms of teaching history. This study demonstrates how textbook publishers' censoring textbooks fosters a teaching of history that degrades knowledge and promotes specific ideologies.

An online Qualtrics survey was designed and distributed to University of Northern Colorado undergraduate students. Results concluded there were few yet impressionable dietary differences according to residence type which could contribute to nutrition-related health risks.

Stereotypes And Their Effects On First-Generation College Students, Kimberlee Ward Jun 2016

Stereotypes And Their Effects On First-Generation College Students, Kimberlee Ward

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

More first-generation students are attending college than ever before, but they are not graduating at the same rates of non first-generation college students (Collier & Morgan 2007). Research attempting to identify, explain, and understand these differences focuses on retention rates, graduation rates, and barriers to success such as knowledge of college expectations, navigating resources, and a sense of belonging. While studies have documented how first-generation college students (FGCS) see their role in college, less work has investigated the stereotypes people hold of first-generation college students and the role these stereotypes play in the success of first-generation college students. Specifically we …

Cuban Success Reexamined: Women’S Role Changes And Contributions To The Cuban Household, Norman Correa

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Scholars who have written about the Cuban success story tend to tell it from a man’s perspective. By using only this voice, scholars overlook the differences between Cuban and American society for women, while neglecting the importance of gender in the transition experience. This mixed methods study examines how the role of Cuban women immigrants changed and how these changes contribute to both family and individual success. Through interviews, this project chronicles the experiences of Cuban women and their newly emerging roles. Findings indicate that when Cuban men came to the United States, they maintained the same role that they …

The Effect Of Gender Congruency Between Perceiver And Target On Emotional Recognition, Kyra Trimble Jun 2016

The Effect Of Gender Congruency Between Perceiver And Target On Emotional Recognition, Kyra Trimble

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Several meta-analyses have concluded that women are more accurate at reading emotions than men, especially the recognition of nonverbal behavior shown through facial expressions. A few studies have demonstrated that women are more accurate at identifying the nonverbal behavior of other women, compared to the ability of men to read the nonverbal behavior of other men. While on average women typically outperform men in tasks involving nonverbal behavior, they also succeed at reading other women whereas men do not show this gender congruency effect. The goal of this research was to further explore this effect of congruency between the gender …

Retention And Persistence For Underrepresented Students In Multicultural Greek Life: A Case Study, Carlos Cruz

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

With increasing numbers of underrepresented students attending college in the United States and concomitant low college graduation rates from four-year institutions for these same students, it is important to explore possible interventions that may increase persistence and retention rates among these populations. The research literature suggests a positive association between students’ participation in Greek Life and persistence/retention from one year to the next. While the literature regarding the relationship between traditional Greek Life and student persistence and retention is robust, the same cannot be said for research on Multicultural Greek Life. If the same relationships are expected to hold between …

"Keep The Quarterback White"!: Rush Limbaugh's Social Construction Of The Black Quarterback, Jennifer Van Otterloo

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Despite the prominence of professional football in U.S. culture, little research has been conducted examining the social construction of race in the game. People have a cultural perception of race; what effect does this perception have on the players? There has been research on the historical struggles of Black athletes in collegiate football, as well as lasting issues of racism. To add to this body of literature, this analysis will focus on the institutional racism embedded in the drafting practices of quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL). This paper finds that institutional racism has a lasting effect on the …

Defining Support: Families Of Children With Special Needs And The Role Of The Speech-Language Pathologist, Robyn Moore

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Speech and language disorders are the most common reason for early intervention services in children under the age of five because these impairments can occur in isolation or with other disabilities. Early intervention seeks to lessen or even eliminate the need for therapy later in the child’s life by providing therapy for the child and education for the parents on how to foster their child’s language development. Parents of children with special needs often have more complex needs than families with typical children. This qualitative study seeks to determine what emotional supports families with children who have special needs require, …

Staff Perceptions And Experiences At A Residential Treatment Center, Miranda Ochoa

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

This phenomenological study uses individual semi-structured interviews to explore staff perspectives at a non-profit community-based residential treatment program in Northern Colorado. Direct care staff members are the central agents of change because they have the most interaction with the clients. A gap in the literature provides reason to investigate staff perspectives in order to improve the overall quality of care in residential treatment. Interviews with four direct care staff took place on site. Three themes were identified in the findings as (a) Interactions and relationships, (b) Stressors and challenges and, (c) Success and personal growth.

Self-Esteem And Relationship Perception, Miranda Klosterman Jun 2016

Self-Esteem And Relationship Perception, Miranda Klosterman

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Fluctuations of state self-esteem, in-the-moment self-esteem, may influence our perceptions romantic relationships in either a positive or negative light. This research, using a subliminal priming task, aimed to test whether manipulation of state self-esteem would cause a significant difference in either relationship satisfaction or, if single, relationship perception. We expected individuals that had their self-esteem positively primed would have higher relationship satisfaction or relationship perception. We also expected a similar relationship for those who had their self-esteem negatively influenced. Some strong correlations were found between self-esteem and relationship satisfaction that leave implications for further research on this topic.
