Introduction To Series And Parallel Circuits, Craig E. Shepherd, Shannon M. Smith
Introduction To Series And Parallel Circuits, Craig E. Shepherd, Shannon M. Smith
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
This lesson begins with an introduction on electricity and how it is formed at the molecular level. It then lets learners explore and define a circuit. This introduction is followed by an exploration where learners develop series and parallel circuits using LED lights and motors. Learners then consider what constitutes a series and parallel circuit, open and closed circuit, and a short circuit. The lesson concludes by having learners consider advantages, limitations, and instructional uses of various electronics kits (e.g., Snap Circuits, littleBits, LilyPad, paper circuits, conductive dough) based on their ability to display circuit paths.

The Effect Of Partisan Representation At Different Levels Of Government On Satisfaction With Democracy In The United States, Julie Vandusky-Allen, Stephen M. Utych
The Effect Of Partisan Representation At Different Levels Of Government On Satisfaction With Democracy In The United States, Julie Vandusky-Allen, Stephen M. Utych
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this paper, we analyze how variations in partisan representation across different levels of government influence Americans’ satisfaction with the democracy in the United States. We conduct two survey experiments and analyze data from the 2016 American National Election Study postelection survey. We find that Americans are the most satisfied with democracy when their most preferred party controls both the federal and their respective state governments. However, we also find that even if an individual’s least preferred party only controls one level of government, they are still more satisfied with democracy than if their most preferred party controls no levels …
Structural Power In Sustainability Transitions: Case Studies Of Energy Storage Integration Into Regional Transmission Organization Decision Processes, Stephanie Lenhart, Dalten Fox
Structural Power In Sustainability Transitions: Case Studies Of Energy Storage Integration Into Regional Transmission Organization Decision Processes, Stephanie Lenhart, Dalten Fox
CAES Energy Policy Institute Faculty Publications and Presentations
Highly technical rules for regional electricity markets shape opportunities for new technologies and the pace of transition to a cleaner and more distributed power system. We compare three case studies of regional transmission organizations and identify common mechanisms that describe the relationship between institutional design and administrative policy decisions. We compare industry actors, old and new, across these case studies to better understand structural power and institutional stability through four mechanisms drawn from the literature: (1) self-reinforcing interests, (2) participation in and position of groups, (3) influence over communication and information, and (4) control over problem framing and pace of …

The Relationship Between Witnessing Bullying, Defending Targets, And Internalizing Symptoms: An Analysis Of Gender Differences Among Sixth-Grade Students, Aida Midgett, Diana M. Doumas, Matt Peck, Amanda Winburn
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
We examined the moderating effect of gender on witnessing bullying, defending, and internalizing symptoms among sixth-grade students at one middle school in the northwestern United States. Results indicated that for females, witnessing bullying was positively associated with depressive symptoms and social anxiety, whereas for males, defending was positively associated with depressive symptoms. Findings suggest the importance of equipping female students with strategies to cope with witnessing bullying and providing male students with appropriate intervention skills for defending targets.

Indigenous-Led Conservation Reading List, Megan Youdelis, Kim Tran, Elizabeth Lunstrum
Environmental Studies Program Faculty Publications and Presentations
This list compiles literature relevant to the bourgeoning Indigenous-led conservation movement, be that through Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs, Canada), Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas (ICCAs, global), or various other forms of Indigenous-led governance or co-governance mechanisms that elevate Indigenous rights, responsibilities, and legal traditions. The introductory Colonial Conservation section is not exhaustive, but rather provides context for the main import of the collection, which is to highlight the possibilities, successes, and challenges associated with decolonizing conservation through Indigenous-led governance. The list is global in scope but has been shaped by the Indigenous Circle of Experts’ (2018) report, We …

New Research Suggests Cat And Dog ‘Moms’ And ‘Dads’ Really Are Parenting Their Pets: Here’S The Evolutionary Explanation Why, Shelly Volsche
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Have you noticed more cats riding in strollers lately? Or bumper stickers that read, “I love my granddogs”? You’re not imagining it. More people are investing serious time, money and attention in their pets.
It looks an awful lot like parenting, but of pets, not people.
Can this kind of caregiving toward animals really be considered parenting? Or is something else going on here?

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
This project aims to get books into the hands of Children in Transition. Who are these children? They are children that have been given a bad hand. These children live in Motels or are homeless or sleeping in their cars. This project will provide these children with the opportunity to get books that are theirs to keep, read and value as their own. I am working with Spread the Word Nevada to get books into these children's hands.

Universities As Arts And Cultural Anchors: Moving Beyond Bricks And Mortar To Entrepreneurship, Workforce, And Community Development Approaches, Amanda Ashley, Leslie Durham
Universities As Arts And Cultural Anchors: Moving Beyond Bricks And Mortar To Entrepreneurship, Workforce, And Community Development Approaches, Amanda Ashley, Leslie Durham
Urban Studies and Community Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
Economic developers refer to universities as anchor institutions because they are rooted regional economic drivers that are sites for development, incubation, entrepreneurship, workforce training, and knowledge transfer. Most anchor research speaks generally about the university or focuses on STEM. Our study asks: to what extent are public universities arts and cultural anchors? Through a comparative case analysis supplemented with interviews of field innovators and a translation of transdisciplinary literature, we deepen the anchor concept, and we propose a conceptual assessment tool. Our applied research helps universities move from being an arts patron to an arts entrepreneur, investor, innovator, and catalyst.

The capstone focuses on the work completed by the stakeholders that are the most affected by the success of these documents.
Feminine Hygiene Kits For Girls/Women Worldwide, Deseret Lauree Lazarte
Feminine Hygiene Kits For Girls/Women Worldwide, Deseret Lauree Lazarte
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Through research and personal experience I found that there is a disparity for girls and women throughout the world when it comes to a natural occurrence for females, called menstruation. For the sake of brevity, I will use the general term “girls” though I mean to include women, also. In many countries girls don’t understand this monthly feminine process and don’t have the proper equipment to use. In many countries girls are taught wives’ tales on why women menstruate. Because of this they perpetuate the falsehoods to their girls and this leads to insecurities and shame. They also do not …

This MDS Capstone Project’s purpose is to bring forth knowledge, various resources, and different perspectives to help reduce employee injuries at Bettencourt & Crossbred Dairies. I chose this project because I was interested in understanding why there had been a steady increase in employee injuries on the dairy farms. In addition, I wanted to explore which departments and locations had increased employee work-related injuries and understand the dynamics surrounding these findings. The conclusion from my research was a need to increase safety awareness across all departments and provide educational information for accident prevention. Along with this information, there was a …

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
This multidisciplinary capstone project focuses on education of the benefits of trees to incentivize the planting of trees at stakeholder homes or businesses. The approach of taking individual action to address a large-scale issue is also highlighted as a qualitative aspect of the capstone. The goal of the project is to understand the benefits of trees, plant more trees and to utilize the approach taken to address other large-scale issues in the future.
Global warming is a complex worldwide problem. The scope of the issue can be paralyzing, stymieing individual action. Tainter (2000, p 6) discusses our general aversion to …

Junky To Healthy, Ashley V. Stegall
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Eating healthy is not always easy. In fact it can be quite challenging especially if you think you are alone. A support group is a great way to feel like you are not alone. This is not your average support group. Since I am a little rough around the edges, you could say the support group is too. It does have structure because I want it to succeed but people can yell, scream, cuss and throw squishy balls at the wall.

Integrative Solutions To A Common Problem, Jacob Steele
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
This project was about eliminating a potentially dangerous and costly problem in my neighborhood. Rodent infestation had destroyed my yard as well those of two close neighbors. Holes and tunnels were hazards to us and our animals, while also damaging our sprinkler systems and being aesthetically displeasing. The project utilized new research and traditional methods to provide an ethical preventative and eradicative method of rodent removal. The stakeholders’ attitudes regarding their property, safety, and pest itself, were all considered to come up with the best solution possible for our situation. No rodent was caught but mitigation of any future problems, …

Reversing The Aging Of The Skilled Trades Workers, Adam C. King
Reversing The Aging Of The Skilled Trades Workers, Adam C. King
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
For the past several decades there has been a prevalence of promoting the need for everyone to obtain at least a bachelor's degree to be able to have a successful career. This had led to a lack of interest of the younger generations in entering the skilled trades as a career. The result of this is that the average age of workers in the trades keeps increasing and as the boomer generation has retired there are not enough capable replacements entering the workforce. Having enough workers in the skilled trades is imperative to keeping the country moving forward by building …
