The Mobilization Of Campaign Activists By The Party Canvass, Peter Wielhouwer Mar 1999

The Mobilization Of Campaign Activists By The Party Canvass, Peter Wielhouwer

Peter W. Wielhouwer

This research examines the role of the personal contacting activities of the political parties as mobilizing forces in what Verba and Nie termed campaign activities. A reformulated rational choice model is discussed in which parties seek to reduce certain avoidable and unavoidable costs associated with political participation. Using data from the 1952 through 1994 American National Election Studies, it is shown that the party contact has been and continues to be a major factor in mobilizing campaign activists. Its influence is remarkably robust, maintaining statistical and substantive significance even after controlling for other important factors usually associated with political behavior.

Assessment Of Irrational Health Beliefs: Relation To Health Practices And Medical Regimen Adherence, Alan Christensen, Patricia Moran, John Wiebe Feb 1999

Assessment Of Irrational Health Beliefs: Relation To Health Practices And Medical Regimen Adherence, Alan Christensen, Patricia Moran, John Wiebe

Alan J. Christensen

The purpose of the present research was to provide initial validation of the 20-item Irrational Health Belief Scale (IHBS). Study 1 included 392 undergraduate psychology students. Results from Study 1 suggested that the IHBS total score is internally consistent and stable over an 18-month time period. Greater health-related cognitive distortion (higher IHBS scores) was associated with weaker internal health locus of control beliefs, lower positive affectivity, stronger chance health locus of control beliefs, and greater negative affectivity. Most important, greater cognitive distortion was uniquely and significantly associated with a less positive pattern of health practices. Study 2 involved 107 individuals …

Making Aluminum In The Rainforest: The Social Impact Of Globalization In The Brazilian Amazon, Paul Ciccantell

Paul Ciccantell

A great deal of recent attention in the social science literature has focused on the process of globalization, the increasing economic and social integration of all regions of the world. The development of the capitalist world economy over the last five hundred years has been tied to and dependent upon the incorporation of socially and geographically remote regions and ecosystems into the world economy.1 A major driving force behind this process of incorporation has been increasing demand for raw materials to fuel industrialization and feed growing populations in the core nations.2 This process of raw materials-based incorporation is shaped by …
