Adolescents, The Internet And The Politics Of Gender: A Feminist Case Analysis, Meenakshi Durham

Meenakshi Gigi Durham

This case study is based on field observation of the first hands-on Internet sessions experienced by a group of lower-income minority teenagers in an inner-city middle school. Using feminist analysis to interrogate the social dynamic within which the Interact use took place, I explore how new technologies are appropriated by adolescents as a site of social bonding. I conclude that the adolescent users' social locations in terms of gender, race, and class work to constrain Internet use to support dominant relations of power

Buffalo's "Prophet Of Protest": The Political Leadership And Activism Of Reverend Dr. Bennett W. Smith, Sr., Sherri Wallace Jun 2001

Buffalo's "Prophet Of Protest": The Political Leadership And Activism Of Reverend Dr. Bennett W. Smith, Sr., Sherri Wallace

Sherri L. Wallace

Recently voted as one of Western New York's most influential people for the twentieth century (Gallivan 1999), the Reverend Dr. [Bennett W. Smith, Sr.] Sr.'s own electoral and political activism clearly emanate from the ethical expressions of the social justice ministry of his late friend and comrade, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King characterized social justice in terms of "comprehensive social empowerment." He believed that freedom for African-Americans without empowerment (i.e. "Civil Rights"), land and/or other social/economic resources, was not "true" freedom (Walker 1991, 24). King's philosophy, similar to Stokely Carmichael's view of "Black Power," articulated a "call …

Fine-Tuning An Academic Library Information Commons By Building Collaborative Relationships, D. Russell Bailey, Barbara Tierney

Barbara Tierney

This year’s successful completion of the $23 million—110,000 square foot expansion of the J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte-- has also led to a concerted effort to “fine-tune” the Library’s new “Information Commons.”  Incorporating five Public Service Desks, 180 public computer stations, and 1200 data drops,  the Information Commons at the Atkins Library is designed to support interaction between library staff, faculty, and students –in finding, evaluating, using, and presenting information regardless of form and format.

Building and fostering collaborative partnerships amongst the multiple Library Public Service Desks (General Information Desk, Reference/Research Data Desk, Media Services Desk, Circulation Desk, …

Public And Private Self-Consciousness And Smoking Behavior In Head And Neck Cancer Patients, Katharine Raichle, Alan Christensen, Shawn Ehlers, Patricia Moran, Lucy Karnell, Gerry Funk

Alan J. Christensen

Patients who continue to use tobacco following treatment for head and neck cancers are at a greater risk for cancer recurrence and earlier mortality. This study examined the unique effects of public and private self-consciousness and negative affect on smoking behavior in a sample of 40 patients with cancers of the head and neck. Measures of public and private self-consciousness and negative affect were administered and assessments of past and current smoking behavior were obtained. Only public self-consciousness was a significant predictor of continued smoking following oncologic treatment. Specifically, individuals with low levels of public self-consciousness were nearly 13 times …

Displaced Persons: Symbols Of South Asian Femininity And The Returned Gaze In U.S. Media Culture, Meenakshi Durham

Meenakshi Gigi Durham

Presents a critical analysis of media images of White women adorned in the symbols of Indian femininity to explore the circulating economy of seeing and representation in the United States. Preservation of the contemporary 'ethnic chic' of power hierarchies by locating the White woman as sexual object and the Indian woman as the disembodied fetish; Implications for South Asian American women.
