Identifying The Support Women Entrepreneurs In Rural Maine Need From Each Other And Their Communities To Thrive, Lisa Luken
Thinking Matters Symposium
Rural women entrepreneurs have the power to positively impact the sustainability of their communities, yet they are faced with internal and external challenges in their pursuits to grow successful businesses and create sustainable livelihoods. While a number of scholars in the past 10 years investigated these challenges and suggested some solutions, more research is needed to identify additional solutions, including those specifically relevant to rural Maine communities. This qualitative study explored the support women entrepreneurs in rural Maine need from each other and their communities to thrive. Data gathered through semi-structured interviews with eleven women entrepreneurs from rural Maine revealed …

Practicing Organizational Care: Using Human-Centered Approaches To Facilitate Change In Your Library, Meghan Musolff, Annie Bélanger
Presentations
Most traditional change management practices seek to mitigate risk. They focus on process and implementation over listening, compassion, and healing. By using human-centered change methodologies and approaches, we will explore ways to tailor change efforts in ways that honor the individuals and the organization. We will consider how to engage in a change that harnesses the strengths of the team, making space for voices to be heard.

Tap Dance As A Nonverbal Language For Autism Spectrum Disorder, J Sydney Rhane Burtis
Tap Dance As A Nonverbal Language For Autism Spectrum Disorder, J Sydney Rhane Burtis
Honors College Theses
Through elements of sound and movement, tap dance employs rhythm as a universal language for nonverbal communication through the medium of music. Through three distinct but related elements, (a literature review, an artist’s statement, and a performance piece), this thesis will explore tap dance as a form of nonverbal language. For individuals with autism spectrum disorder, tap dance may help to achieve further attunement with themselves and the outside world. Due to autistic people’s impaired communicative, interactional, and skilled abilities, experiencing the relationships formed through tap dance may facilitate improvement. The literature review begins with a brief definition of nonverbal …

Examining The Connection Between Sibling Relationships And Empathy Development, Alicia Joswiak
Examining The Connection Between Sibling Relationships And Empathy Development, Alicia Joswiak
Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters
Humans are social beings who shape their lives through relationships. The ability to understand the mental status of others, or empathy, is a critical determinant to successful social relationships. Few studies have explored how older siblings influence the development of empathy in younger siblings. The current study examined an aspect of positive sibling relationships to understand what interactions and/or behaviors between siblings foster empathy development. The primary hypothesis was that a positive correlation exists between physical affection among siblings and empathy development in the youngest sibling. This study included 100 adult participants who are the youngest sibling. An online survey …
How Covid-19 Restrictions During The 2020-2021 School Year Affected The Mental Health, Physical Health, And Social Health Of The Students At Bowling Green State University, Hannah Davies
Honors Projects
The purpose of this study was to survey BGSU students in the Honors College and Athletics Department to obtain their perspective on whether Covid-19 restrictions during the 2020-2021 school year affected their mental health, physical health, and social health. The study was performed in an effort to allow people to consider whether Covid-19 protocols influenced the mental and physical well-being of students. If that was the case, was there a difference between the student-athletes and the non-athlete students.

Self-Efficacy & Perception Of Mental Well-Being, Sarah L. Capen-Becerra, Sophie K. Louis, Abigail Danzig, Olimpia Sansone
Psychology Presentations
When young adults have high self-efficacy, they tend to exhibit more resilience to stress and other mental health problems. Additionally, women are reported to experience depression at higher rates than men, which might be explained by potential gender bias in current diagnostic criteria. Our study examined the influence of gender and mental health self-efficacy on depression symptoms as well as the interaction of these two variables on depression outcomes in college aged-students. Participants (N = 58) were tasked to fill out an anonymous Qualtrics survey based on the Gender Inclusive Depression Scale (GIDS; Martin et al. (2013), and an additional …
Developmental, Personality, And Family Influences On Risk-Taking During Young Adulthood, Jessica Leach
Developmental, Personality, And Family Influences On Risk-Taking During Young Adulthood, Jessica Leach
Psychology Presentations
The aim of this research was to identify relationships between narcissism and likely risk-taking behaviors in young adult students, as well as to assess possible developmental and family influences over this personality trait and these behaviors. Evaluations of the severity of a range of criminal activity were also assessed through this study as predicted by narcissism and as a predictor of risk behaviors. The data was collected through the use of anonymous online surveys, which included a total of five measurement instruments. Since young adulthood is a time of engaging in more risk behaviors than later periods of life, the …

Shifting Weight Attitudes? A Look At Stigma And Implicit Bias, Carolyn H. Decicco, Sarah L. Capen-Becerra, Sophie K. Louis
Psychology Presentations
The goal of the current study is to investigate students’ perceptions of controllability and biases against individuals who smoke and individuals who present as ‘overweight’ in the workplace. Participants (N = 69) were randomly assigned to read an article describing either weight-based (n = 35) or smoking-based discrimination in the workplace (n = 34). Participants were tasked with writing open-ended responses to the articles. Participants in the smoking group were more likely to endorse (n = 16; 47.1%) discriminatory workplace practices than those in the weight group (n = 4; 11.4%), who showed more conflicted justification responses (weight n = …

An Exploration Of A Year At The Ursinus Food Forest, Victoria Bearden
Environment and Sustainability Presentations
The Ursinus Food Forest began a commitment to a new form of sustainable land management at Whittaker Environmental Research Station. This management integrates lessons from urban agriculture, urban forestry, and agroforestry (see Clark & Nichols 2013) with principles of permaculture (Jacke et al 2005). Begun in 2017, and this past fall marked 2 years since the planting of phase one in 2019. In the fall of 2021 students, faculty, facilities, and volunteers planted the second phase of the food forest site, which added 7 new food producing species. Including this, many projects were created to enhance the site throughout the …

We asked individuals to participate via convenience sampling, whereby anonymous surveys were completed through Survey Monkey by staff members employed at Preble Street in Portland, ME, who have worked directly with the homeless population during the COVID-19 pandemic. We expect the results to suggest an increase in …
Homosexual Persecution In The Holocaust, Ethan Ryan
Homosexual Persecution In The Holocaust, Ethan Ryan
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
During the Holocaust, same-sex desiring men were persecuted alongside Jews, political prisoners, and other minority groups. The punishments that same-sex desiring men faced were directed at the act of homosexuality instead of the identity of homosexual. Incarceration in Nazi camps for same-sex desiring men included sexual violence and an attempt to convert these men to a heterosexual lifestyle. This research explores memoirs by homosexual holocaust survivors, including Heinz Heger and Pierre Seel, as well as experiences with same-sex desiring men written by a communist prisoner of Sachsenhausen, Harry Naujoks.

The Mediation Basic Psychological Needs Has On Leaderships Styles And Outcomes, Eric Zhu
The Mediation Basic Psychological Needs Has On Leaderships Styles And Outcomes, Eric Zhu
Symposium of Student Scholars
There has been a focus on which leadership styles relate to certain outcomes, such as burnout, organizational commitment, and positive/negative affect. It appear that what predicts whether or not a person feels positively or negatively about their organization and how much burnout they experience is not predicted by leadership styles in and of itself, but rather how the leadership style satisfies or frustrates basic psychological needs. Although organizational commitment does not seem to be predicted by basic psychological needs solely and that leadership style does play a significant, if secondary, role in its prediction, I believe that to be due …
