Content Management Systems And 3d Models, Dillon Mark Wackerman
Content Management Systems And 3d Models, Dillon Mark Wackerman
Fondren Library Research
This presentation will explore methods of creating and displaying 3D images in relation to Content Management Systems and online collections. Examining the creation of 3D models through various platforms, we will discuss the interaction and feasibility for implementation of several common 3D formats.
The online display of 3D models has been in use for several years, most notably in archaeological reconstruction projects and more recently in digital imaging within the field of medical science. For this presentation, a 3D model is a visual representation that can be manipulated with various tools, which enable it to be turned, rotated and magnified …

Elements Of Successful Online Journal Publishing, Dillon Wackerman, R Philip Reynolds
Fondren Library Research
At the Center for Digital Scholarship (CDS) at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU), we have discovered that there are many complex details to launching a successful online journal-publishing program. In our lead role at SFASU, we have streamlined implementation to make this a relatively straightforward process for the journal managers and editors.
Most of the journal editors with whom we currently work are experienced authors and reviewers, but they rely upon us to assist them with the design, implementation and editorial processes. Following this, we have found it beneficial to provide comprehensive and personalized customer support and training. Some …

The Center for Digital Scholarship at Stephen F. Austin State University has worked with the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, and in particular professor David Kulhavy, to digitize and publish online in SFA ScholarWorks the college's scholarly work and history. The latest development from this relationship can be seen in the creation of the East Texas Forest Entomology Seminar event page in SFA ScholarWorks, which documents the seminar's proceedings and history.

Support groups for parents of children with disabilities are increasing, though not at a rate that may accommodate the burgeoning number of families who are facing hardships. Finding support groups that will meet their needs is a critical part of functioning during a challenging time.

Translating Failure Into Success, Deana Brown, Elizabeth Ramsey
Elizabeth Ramsey
All of us have had to work through life challenges and perhaps even suffered professional setbacks. Whether it was a poorly attended program, a new instructional method that was ineffective, or getting started on professional development requirements, sharing our experiences of failure with each other in a safe and accepting space can be cathartic and informative. See what skeletons we have hiding in our closets, and learn how showing yours the light of day might be the most inspiring connection you make for yourself, your colleagues, and your library!

Downsizing a branch library’s floor space by a third necessitates extensive materials de-acquisitioning to the tune of thousands of volumes. This presentation describes the context of downsizing, and the policies and procedures used to determine which materials were recently withdrawn from Colgate University’s Cooley Science Library collections.
Designer Genes, Designer Drugs And Resources Designing “The New Biology”: A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Fred Stoss
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
A seven-foot 1950s-style model of DNA hangs in my office, as a reminder of what we then knew about “The Molecule of Life.” We today marvel at how far we have come in our understanding of that molecule, its impact on the study of biology, and the new discoveries in “The New Biology” of the Post-Genomic Era. What resources, services, publications and training is required of science librarians to assist students, faculties, and staff. What are today’s driving forces directing “The Newest Biology?”

Library videos are common on YouTube, but finding the time and resources to produce them is a challenge. A collaboration among the engineering librarians, the College of Engineering Teaching Excellence Institute, Library IT, and the Research and Assessment Unit at Cornell identified resources and resulted in the production of 8 videos for specific classes in materials science and biomedical engineering. Jill and Jeremy will discuss the details of the collaboration; Sean the software and hardware used.
Organizing Chemical Information To Support Lab Safety, Leah Mcewen
Organizing Chemical Information To Support Lab Safety, Leah Mcewen
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
The Internet provides ready access to a wide variety of information sources relevant to answering chemical safety questions in the laboratory. However, this information is found in a wide variety of formats with varying audiences and intents. The quality of the information is difficult to evaluate, organize, and use to support risk assessment of laboratory work with hazardous chemicals. Professionals in health and safety, chemistry librarianship and informatics are partnering to address these challenges particularly in the academic research and teaching context. Goals are to streamline access to relevant data from authoritative sources, organize and classify chemical safety information to …
A Practical Comparison Of Scopus And Web Of Science, A. Ben Wagner
A Practical Comparison Of Scopus And Web Of Science, A. Ben Wagner
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Few organizations can afford both Web of Science and Scopus, making it difficult for librarians to make in-depth comparisons to support acquisition decisions. The new SUNY-wide Elsevier Big Deal included access to Scopus making it possible for our unversity to perform a review based on the current and much improved interfaces of both databases. Search, display, & analysis features will be compared with a special emphasis on author/institution disambiguation via clustering and citation metrics.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of scanned text enables full-text searching. Unfortunately, OCR software does not produce 100% accurate representation of the text, especially with older works having varying fonts, odd layouts and ink bleed-through. Led by Missouri Botanical Garden, and partnering with New York Botanical Garden, Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology and Cornell, an IMLS-funded project has developed 2 games to engage the public in correcting inaccurately OCRed text in BHL.
You Know What You Write, But Do You Know Your Rights? Understanding And Protecting Your Rights As An Author, Jill Cirasella
You Know What You Write, But Do You Know Your Rights? Understanding And Protecting Your Rights As An Author, Jill Cirasella
Publications and Research
When you publish a journal article, you sign a copyright or licensing agreement. Do you know what you’re agreeing to when you sign it?
Different journals have different policies: Some journals require you to relinquish your copyright. (You then have to ask permission or even pay to share your article with students and colleagues!) Some journals allow you to retain some rights (e.g., the right to post online). Some journals leave copyright in your hands. (You simply give the journal a non-exclusive license to publish the article.)
How can you find out a journal’s policy? How can you negotiate your …

Opportunities Beyond Electronic Resource Management: An Extension Of The Core Competencies For Electronic Resources Librarians To Digital Scholarship And Scholarly Communications, Angela Dresselhaus
Angela Dresselhaus
This paper will provide an overview of current topics in Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communications DS/SC and draw connections between these new areas and the traditional skill set of electronic resources librarians (ERLs). Commonalities between the skills outlined in the Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians (CCERL) and those needed for success in DS/SC will form the basis of the author's recommendations for involvement in these new areas.
