To help them gain a better understanding of the causes and potential consequences of a U.S.-Iraq confrontation, a dozen University of Maine students will discuss the issue with their counterparts from the American University in Cairo on Dec. 9, [2002] beginning at 12 p.m. The students will discuss Middle Eastern issues – with a focus on the situation in Iraq – via a livevideoconference hook-up in the Soderberg Center in Jenness Hall. The discussion will also be broadcast to the university’s Hutchinson Center in Belfast.

In the Fall of 2000, State Representative Larry McKeon, at the urging of local community groups and residents, commissioned Loyola University Chicago’s Center for Urban Research and Learning (CURL) to provide an analysis of relevant data regarding housing and land use in the Uptown community. A Local Advisory Council (LAC) was created to review, evaluate, and advise the project staff as they collected and analyzed data sets. Although public housing is typically associated with high crime rates, little research has been done on fear of crime or violent victimization experiences among public housing residents. Moreover, there are few studies that look specifically at women’s fear of crime or violent victimization experiences in public housing, despite the fact that women constitute the majority of public housing residents. These issues were examined in the present study through interviews with female public housing residents in Camden, New Jersey (NJ). The interviews reveal high rates of violent victimization, especially at the hands of intimates and acquaintances. Fear of crime is also …

In an 1830s review of Lydia Maria Child's Good Wives published in Sarah Hale's Ladies' Magazine, the enthusiastic commentator quoted above sets Child's latest book within a thriving literary culture that values didactic literature. Acknowledging the importance of a genre I call the domestic literacy narrative, the reviewer confidently asserts that "the prevalent rage for reading" promises to promote not only familial but national well-being-promises, that is, if more books like Child's are regularly published to help train women to direct their family's reading and extract from it principles and behaviors consonant with their country's "future good."

The Strategic Uses Of Gender In Household Negotiations: Women Workers On Mexico’S Northern Border, Leslie C. Gates

The study illustrates the potential of the ‘doing gender’ perspective to explain why employment helps women win some negotiations at home but not others. Eighteen in-depth interviews with women maquiladora workers in Mexico suggest that employment may help women gain new rights and extend the limits of respect accorded them by male companions and parents. Women were more successful when they used negotiating strategies that conformed to their gender identity, such as making offers, than when they used negotiating strategies that challenged traditional gender norms, such as withdrawing services or making threats.

Unlike commonsense notions and the findings from animal research, the literature concerning the effects of density on human social behavior is paralyzed by contradictory findings. This article examines empirically two fundamental issues which could account for this and which are central to the density-crowding debate: (1) whether observed crowding effects are the result of causation or selection and (2)whether individuals are negatively affected by both low and high levels of density. Data from the Toronto Mental Health and Stress study are analyzed using structural equation modeling to investigate these questions. The results support the notion that the effects of density …

In Egypt, refugee status determination (RSD) by the United Nations refugee agency is frequently the single most important decision anyone will make affecting the life of an asylum-seeker. In 2001, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Cairo received the most individual RSD applications of all of the agency's offices worldwide. The Cairo office has taken some significant steps to improve the RSD process. At the same time, some important international standards of fair and effective RSD procedures have not been implemented. This study of the Quonset Auditorium, one roadhouse among many on the regular tour route of R&B, gospel and country musicians in the post-World War II era (1947- 1959), illustrates the important role of roadhouses during a time of growth and change in popular music. It situates memories and experiences from the Quonset Auditorium in relation to regional and national movements of the day such as highway development, commercial and popular music, and the civil rights movement. Perpetrators Of Early Physical And Sexual Abuse Among Homeless And Runaway Adolescents, Kimberly A. Tyler, Ana Mari Cauce

Objective: To examine abuse specific variables among homeless and runaway adolescents and to look at perpetrators of childhood abuse.
Method: A total of 372 homeless and runaway adolescents were interviewed using a systematic sam¬pling strategy in metropolitan Seattle. Young people were interviewed on the streets and in shelters by outreach workers in youth service agencies.
Results: Approximately one-half of these young people reported being physically abused and al¬most one-third experienced sexual abuse. Females experienced significantly higher rates of sex¬ual abuse compared to males, and sexual minority youth experienced significantly higher rates of physical and sexual abuse compared to …

Social And Emotional Outcomes Of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Review Of Recent Research, Kimberly A. Tyler

A total of 41 articles examined the social and emotional outcomes of childhood sexual abuse. The outcomes examined included suicide and substance use, gang involvement, pregnancy, running away, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), risky sexual behavior, and behavioral problems. Results for each of these outcomes tended to vary by developmental period. How¬ever, problems of internalizing and externalizing behavior appeared to be specific to sexually abused children of all age groups. Some studies found differences in outcome according to gender, race, and age. Although findings related to abuse characteristics were found to vary from study to study, severity of the abuse, use …

Over the past decade there has been an increasing national emphasis on the participation of individuals with disabilities in the labor force. This concern was recognized through Executive Order No. 13078 signed by President Bill Clinton in March 1998, establishing the Presidential Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities. The Task Force was charged with a mission "to create a coordinated and aggressive policy to bring adults with disabilities into gainful employment at a rate that is as close as possible to that of the general adult population" (Section 1 (c)). A proposal by two Maine Indian tribes to build a $650 million casino in the southern part of the state has generated a lot of controversy. Casino advocates say gaming monies will enable the tribes to become self-sufficient while also boosting state revenues. Opponents, on the other hand, say such a facility would lead to increased crime in the area, take employees away from area businesses, and cost the state millions to treat people with gambling addiction problems. Guanxi, loosely defined as "inter-personal relations" or "personal connections," is one of the key socio-cultural concepts in understanding Chinese society. This thesis presented a theoretical examination of the Chinese socio-cultural concept of guanxi. By using a broad survey of the available literature, this thesis established the following points: Social structures shape and define the development of guanxi practice in Chinese society. Guanxi relationships are based on the social exchange of gifts and favors in dyadic or multi-stranded social networks.
