What Are The Differences Between The Left And Right In Central America Today? A Debate About The Attitudes Of Political Elites And The Nature Of Democracy In Nicaragua, El Salvador And Guatemala., Salvador Marti I Puig, Salvador Santiuste Cué
Salvador Marti i Puig
This paper analyzes the opinions and attitudes of the main parliamentary groups in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala on two crucial subjects: democracy and its institutions; and, the relationship between the market and the State. With regard to democracy and its institutions, the paper explores the current perceptions/opinions of political elites on the left and the right with regard to these issues, in countries that recently achived democracy after suffering bloody civil wars. Secondly, the paper outlines the agreements, disagreements, as well as the changes that have taken place within these political factions which, up to today, continue to claim …

Perspectives On Social Cognition, Leslie Marsh, Christian Onof
Perspectives On Social Cognition, Leslie Marsh, Christian Onof
Leslie Marsh
No longer is sociality the preserve of the social sciences, or ‘‘culture’’ the preserve of the humanities or anthropology. By the same token, cognition is no longer the sole preserve of the cognitive sciences. Social cognition (SC) or, sociocognition if you like, is thus a kaleidoscope of research projects that has seen exponential growth over the past 30 or so years. That so many disciplines now invoke the term ‘‘social cognition,’’ shouldn’t tempt one into thinking that they are all denoting the same idea. On the contrary, with such methodologically and perspectivally diverse interests involved, there is every chance that …

Objective Determining the prevalence of depression and comparing sociodemographic, metabolic and clinical indicators in depressed and non depressed people suffering from type 2 diabetes. Methods A comparative cross-sectional study was carried out on a sample of 450 people aged over 30 suffering from type 2 diabetes; they had been diagnosed more than one year before and psychopathology had not been determined for them. A modified Zung's scale was applied and a sociodemographic survey carried out. Glucosylated haemoglobin, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and glycemia in fasting were all evaluated. Diagnostic history and clinical state regarding diabetes were recorded. Results …

The Study Of Criminology (犯罪學) In China, Kam C. Wong
The Study Of Criminology (犯罪學) In China, Kam C. Wong
Kam C. Wong
As a scholarly discipline, criminology in China is growing in stature, maturity, and utility. In a short 30 years since 1979, China has successfully established criminology as a scientific field of study with well defined subjects, recognized scholars, and copious research/publications.
To date, there is very few systematic and comprehensive study of criminology (in English language) as an emerging and important field of academic discipline in China. As a result, we know very little about its focus and scope, direction and trend, theories and findings, problems and issues. This is a first attempt to do so.

Software Engineers Or Artists? Programmers’ Identity Choices, Dariusz Jemielniak
Software Engineers Or Artists? Programmers’ Identity Choices, Dariusz Jemielniak
Dariusz Jemielniak
This paper explores how assigning software developers the identity of “engineers” metes out specific assumptions about IT projects. To this end, the paper describes an alternative metaphor of programming as art, which is commonly used by the programmers interviewed. In addition, the discussion draws conclusions from the discrepancies between the two views as well as from the proposed metaphor, explaining organizational reluctance to aesthetical vocabulary. This paper discusses occupational identity—emphasizing the identity of programmers—using qualitative research methods. As such, it enriches the literature currently available on this profession.

Sources Of Uncertainty In Project Management: A “Real Life” Account, Dominika Latusek, Dariusz Jemielniak
Dariusz Jemielniak
Although the studies of IT project management abound, they rarely present in one study the perspective of both the customers and the providers. The very relation between customers and provides has been rather rarely explored (Latusek and Jemielniak, 2007). It may be partially due to the fact that usually neither clients, nor providers, are willing to let outsiders into the details of the project. Through this paper we want to take advantage of our unique research setting in which we were allowed to interview representatives of both parties. Through presenting their stories we wish to cast light on the actual …

Climate Change And Carbon Sequestration: Assessing A Liability Regime For Long-Term Storage Of Carbon Dioxide, Alexandra B. Klass, Elizabeth J. Wilson
Alexandra B. Klass
As the nation struggles with how to address climate change, one of the most significant questions is how to reduce increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. One promising technology is carbon capture and sequestration (“CCS”), which consists of capturing carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and industrial sources and sequestering them in deep geologic formations for long periods of time. Areas for potential CO2 sequestration include oil and gas fields, saline aquifers, and coal seams. As Congress and the private sector begin to spend billions of dollars to research and deploy this technology, there has been insufficient attention …

Administrative And Punitive Isolation Of Children In Jails And Prisons: Cruel, Unusual, And Awaiting Condemnation, Ben Kleinman
Ben Kleinman-Green
This article applies our emerging understanding of how children mature into adults to the question of whether it is acceptable to subject children to isolation regimes in jails and prisons just as we do fully developed adults. I hope to shed light on the legal questions raised by the impact isolation has on the development of child inmates.

The Clockwork Commune, Bright B. Simons

This paper accepts the thesis that technology is not value-free. It then focuses on technology’s form as being institutional in nature and characteristic. On that basis, it argues that technology “absorbs the surrounding ethos and regurgitate pieces of the normative pattern back into the social kaleidoscope of choices, and by thus doing influence the thrust of liberty.” Hence, rather than the real danger lying in runaway technologies that deepen the process of surveillance and control, and thus curtail liberty, it resides, instead, in the possibility that technology’s role could be usurped to justify otherwise unjustifiable redefinitions of the rights of …

Exploring Cyberfriendship Formation Among Malaysian Youth, Abu Sadat Nurullah
Abu Sadat Nurullah
Cyberspace has become a common place for youth to involve in online networking and to make new friends. This paper focuses on: a) the dynamics of cyberfriendship formation; b) the role of self-disclosure, alienation, and frequency of online interaction on formation of cyberfriendship; and c) the extent of satisfaction achieved from that relationship. A stratified random sample of 250 youth (Mean age = 21.16, SD = 1.36) studying in different undergraduate faculties from a large Malaysian university responded to self-tailored questionnaires. The results revealed that 85.6% youth have formed online friendship using multiple communication channels. Major findings of this research …

“Immigrant ‘Transnationalism’ And The Presence Of The Past”, Roger D. Waldinger
“Immigrant ‘Transnationalism’ And The Presence Of The Past”, Roger D. Waldinger
Roger D Waldinger
Scholars of “immigrant transnationalism” tell us that the case of contemporary migrants living “here” and “there” represents something new. Engaging with the historical and contemporary literatures, this chapter argues that the relationship between “immigrant transnationalism” now and then takes a far more complex form. The chapter highlights three different modalities of past/present connection: (1) recurrence -- the continued reappearance of trans-state immigrant and ethnic ties linking “here” and “there, a feature, however, generic to all long-distance migrations, whether international or internal; (2) secular change -- the rise of massive state apparatuses controlling population movements between states, and rationalizing distinctions between …
Research On The Experiences Of International Graduate Students: A Selective Literature Review, Bryan M. Carson
Research On The Experiences Of International Graduate Students: A Selective Literature Review, Bryan M. Carson
Bryan M. Carson
In 2003, there were 586,523 international students in U.S. institutions. International students make up 13 percent of U.S. graduate students, and account for one-fifth of all doctorates. Some students remain in the U.S., while others return to their home countries. Either way, however, international students represent a very significant portion of the U.S. higher education field. Yet the literature on international graduate students is surprisingly sparse. While there are many studies of the international graduate student experience, they tend to focus mostly on language acquisition, academics, acculturation and social adaptation. There are few well-constructed theoretical, qualitative, or quantitative studies dealing …
Oromummaa As The Master Ideology Of The Oromo National Movement, Asafa Jalata
Oromummaa As The Master Ideology Of The Oromo National Movement, Asafa Jalata
Asafa Jalata
Oromummaa, as an element of culture, nationalism, and vision, has the power to serve as a manifestation of the collective identity of the Oromo national movement. The foundation of Oromummaa must be built on overarching principles that are embedded within Oromo traditions and culture and, at the same time, have universal relevance for all oppressed peoples. The main foundations of Oromummaa are individual and collective freedom, justice, popular democracy, and human liberation all of which are built on the concept of saffu (moral and ethical order) and are enshrined in gada principles. Although, in recent years, many Oromos have become …

Acculturation, Allen Gnanam
Acculturation, Allen Gnanam
Allen Gnanam
Acculturation is an experience/ phenomenon that occurs when groups of individuals with different cultural backgrounds engage in on going/ continuous physical contact, which in turn causes one or more of the different cultures too experience adaptation/ a change in their original cultural practices (Berry, 1997); (Berry, 2008). Acculturation is a phenomenon that occurs at a macro level/ group level and a micro level/ individual level, and this means that an individual of a certain ethnic minority group can experience acculturation differently than their ethnic minority group (Berry, 1997). Macro level acculturation occurs when the original culture of a specific ethnic …
China- Tibet Conflict, Allen Gnanam
China- Tibet Conflict, Allen Gnanam
Allen Gnanam
China- Tibet tensions are continually growing, as Tibetans are protesting for total independence from China, despite condemnation from their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who is only seeking a sense of autonomy for Tibet (Sinder, 2008). As Tibetan protests are becoming violent and aggressive, the Dalai Lama has also threatened to resign as Tibet’s government in exile (Sinder, 2008), however, his rhetoric is not being exposed to the Tibetan people, due to government censorship in China. Therefore the Dalai Lama, an exiled institutional entrepreneur, has to find new methods that will enable his influential message, to be received by the …
