Predictors Of Principals' Perceptions Of School Resource Officer Effectiveness In Kentucky, David May, Stephen Fessel, Shannon Means Dec 2003

Predictors Of Principals' Perceptions Of School Resource Officer Effectiveness In Kentucky, David May, Stephen Fessel, Shannon Means

David May

In recent years, many states have increased the presence of law enforcement at schools in response to a perception that schools have become unsafe places for children. The data regarding the impact of school resource officers (SROs) on school safety are limited, however. Using survey data collected from 128 principals, we examine the impact of SROs on perceptions of school safety among school administrators in Kentucky. Results indicate that most principals in Kentucky feel that SROs provide a valuable addition to school safety in their schools; however, the results also reveal the importance of communication between principals, SR Os, and …

The Economic Ascent Of China And The Potential For Restructuring The Capitalist World-Economy, Paul Ciccantell, Stephen Bunker Dec 2003

The Economic Ascent Of China And The Potential For Restructuring The Capitalist World-Economy, Paul Ciccantell, Stephen Bunker

Paul Ciccantell

The economic ascent of China in the past

two decades is the most dramatic change in

the capitalist world-economy of this period.

Analyses focus on changes in government

control of the economy, the availability of low

cost workers for export production, the historical

characteristics of Chinese economy

and society, and the role of the Chinese government

as a developmental state. All highlight

key parts of China’s economic ascent, but

none addresses what we argue will be the critical

component of future sustained economic

ascent, if it is to take place in China: the role

of raw materials and transport industries …

Pissing On Demand : Workplace Drug Testing And The Rise Of The Detox Industry, Kenneth Tunnell Dec 2003

Pissing On Demand : Workplace Drug Testing And The Rise Of The Detox Industry, Kenneth Tunnell

Kenneth Tunnell

Drug testing has become the norm in many workplaces. In order to get a job, potential employees are required to provide their urine for testing. Pissing on Demandexamines this phenomenon along with the resulting rise of the anti-drug testing movement, or the "detox industry," that works to beat these tests. Strategies include over-the-counter products like "body flushers" that sound innocent but are really designed to mask the presence of illegal drugs to kits advertised in pro-drug publications like High Timesthat make no bones about their real purpose. The first expose of the detox industry in all its manifestations, this book …

In The Name Of The Nation: Reflections On Nationalism And Patriotism, Rogers Brubaker Dec 2003

In The Name Of The Nation: Reflections On Nationalism And Patriotism, Rogers Brubaker

Rogers Brubaker

Treating nationhood as a political claim rather than an ethnocultural fact, this paper asks how “nation” works as a category of practice, a political idiom, a claim. What does it mean to speak “in the name of the nation”? And how should one assess the practice of doing so? Taking issue with the widely held view that “nation” is an anachronistic and indefensible or at least deeply suspect category, the paper sketches a qualified defence of inclusive forms of nationalism and patriotism in the contemporary American context, arguing that they can help develop more robust forms of citizenship, provide support …

Americans And Genetically Modified Food: Knowledge, Opinion And Interest In 2004., William Hallman, W. Hebden, Cara Cuite, Helen Aquino, John Lang Dec 2003

Americans And Genetically Modified Food: Knowledge, Opinion And Interest In 2004., William Hallman, W. Hebden, Cara Cuite, Helen Aquino, John Lang

John T. Lang

This report presents the results from the third in a series of studies examining public perception of genetically modified (GM) food in the United States. All three studies were based on survey results of separate, nationally representative samples of approximately 1,200 Americans taken in 2001, 2003, and 2004. While the survey instrument on which the current report is based maintained many of the same measures of awareness and attitude as its two predecessors, it also included several new queries that assess the ability of respondents to recall specific news stories related to GM food, their interest in the topic, and …

Out Of Touch Or On The Money: Do The Clinical Objectives Of Addiction Treatment Coincide With Economic Evaluation Results?, Michael French, Clara Dismuke, Helena Salome, Mark Foss, Chris Scott, Michael Dennis Dec 2003

Out Of Touch Or On The Money: Do The Clinical Objectives Of Addiction Treatment Coincide With Economic Evaluation Results?, Michael French, Clara Dismuke, Helena Salome, Mark Foss, Chris Scott, Michael Dennis

Michael T. French

Previous economic studies have examined the association between substance abuse treatment and reduced costs to society, but it remains uncertain whether the economic measures used in cost and benefit-cost analyses of treatment programs correspond in direction and magnitude with clinical outcomes. In response to this uncertainty, the present study analyzed a longitudinal data set of addiction treatment clients to determine the statistical agreement between clinical and economic outcomes over time. Data were collected from 1,326 clients in the Chicago cohort of the Persistent Effects of Treatment Study. These individuals were interviewed at baseline as well as at 6-, 24-, 36-, …

Learning Community: Popular Education And Homeless Women, Lorna Rivera Dec 2003

Learning Community: Popular Education And Homeless Women, Lorna Rivera

Lorna Rivera

In this essay, I present the voices of homeless women to illustrate the empowering impact of popular education on their lives. Popular education is a methodology of teaching and learning through dialogue that directly links curriculum content to people's lived experience and that inspires political action (Beder, 1996; Freire, 1985, 1990; Williams, 1996). On the basis of 5 years of ethnographic research in a shelter-based popular-education program, I describe how popular education approaches inspired a sense of community among a group of 50 homeless women of color. I also examine some of the barriers to literacy faced by women who …

Homeless Persons' Residential Preferences And Needs: A Pilot Survey, Russell K. Schutt Dec 2003

Homeless Persons' Residential Preferences And Needs: A Pilot Survey, Russell K. Schutt

Russell K. Schutt

The 2003 Pilot Survey of Residential Preferences and Needs sampled individuals with psychiatric difficulties at three large generic shelters for adult individuals in Boston and one of four transitional shelters funded by the Metro Boston Region of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health.  The survey measured: homeless persons’ residential preferences; the residential recommendations of shelter-based clinicians for these homeless persons; clinicians’ assessments of these persons’ living skills and safety.  Respondents at the DMH shelter were somewhat more satisfied with their shelter and with the people who stayed there than were those at the generic shelters. The DMH shelter …

Outcomes And Costs Of Day Hospital Treatment And Nonmedical Day Treatment For Chemical Dependency, Michael T. French, Jane Witbrodt, Lee Ann Kaskutas

Michael T. French

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to estimate the outcomes and costs of day hospital and nonmedical community-based day treatment for chemical dependency. METHOD: A community sample of 271 adults (179 men) dependent on alcohol and/or drugs was recruited and randomized to either a hospital-based (medical) day treatment program or to a community-based (nonmedical) day treatment program. The day hospital (DH) program lasted for 3 weeks. One community-based program (CP2) lasted for 4 weeks, and the other (CP1) lasted for 6 weeks but with shorter treatment days and more criminal justice clients. Because of our concerns regarding treatment fidelity, …

Transnationalism In Question, Roger D. Waldinger, David Fitzgerald Dec 2003

Transnationalism In Question, Roger D. Waldinger, David Fitzgerald

Roger D Waldinger

This paper seeks a critical engagement with the new literature on immigrant “transnationalism,” which correctly notes that connectivity between source and destination points is an inherent aspect of the migration phenomenon. In so doing, however, this new literature highlights the characteristics shared by all forms of long-distance migration and therefore fails to identify the traits distinctive to migration across states, of which the political element is the most important. States seek to control movement across territorial boundaries – exit as well as entry -- which is why defining “transnationalism” in terms of the “regular and sustained” cross-border activities of individuals, …

Female And Male Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport And Higher Education: A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment, C. Keith Harrison Dec 2003

Female And Male Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport And Higher Education: A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment, C. Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The termination of a collegiate athletic career is inevitable for all student athletes. The purpose of this study was to explore student athletes’ perceptions of the athletic career transition process. One-hundred-andforty- three (n = 143) National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II student athletes were administered the Life After Sports Scale (LASS) designed by the authors. The LASS is a 58-item mixed method inventory. The scope of this inquiry explored the qualitative section, which examined participants’ perceptions that were visually primed with a narrative description of a student athlete who made the transition out of collegiate sport successfully. Three major …

College Students' Perceptions, Myths, And Stereotypes About African American Athleticism: A Qualitative Investigation, Keith Harrison Dec 2003

College Students' Perceptions, Myths, And Stereotypes About African American Athleticism: A Qualitative Investigation, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Examining the ‘natural’ athlete myth and utilizing the recent literature on cultural/social factors in athleticism, this study through survey research examines the myth of the ‘natural’ African American athlete. Participants consist of 301 university students from a large, traditionally White, midwest institution. The primary research question is to determine the attitudes of college students in terms of how they perceive the success of the African American athlete in certain sports. The purpose is to assess participants’ perceptions of the African American athlete and their opinion as to whether or not African American athletes are superior in certain sports (football, basketball, …

Abject Economics: The Effects Of Battering On Women's Work And Employability, Angela M. Moe, Myrtle P. Bell Dec 2003

Abject Economics: The Effects Of Battering On Women's Work And Employability, Angela M. Moe, Myrtle P. Bell

Angela M. Moe

Research on the effects of battering on women’s lives has focused on poverty, homelessness, and welfare receipt, often centering on women who are uneducated or undereducated. The authors analyze how battering impacts the work and employability of women from various employment levels and backgrounds. Data were obtained through qualitative interviews with 19 residents of a domestic violence shelter, some of whom had obtained substantial education and built solid and lucrative careers prior to being abused. The women described instances in which battering had obstructed their ability to find work, maintain employment, and use their wages to establish greater economic independence …

Ethnicity As Cognition, Rogers Brubaker, Mara Loveman, Peter Stamatov Dec 2003

Ethnicity As Cognition, Rogers Brubaker, Mara Loveman, Peter Stamatov

Rogers Brubaker

This article identi¢es an incipient and largely implicit cognitive turn in the study of ethnicity, and argues that it can be consolidated and extended by drawing on cognitive research in social psychology and anthropology. Cognitive perspectives provide resources for conceptualizing ethnicity, race, and nation as perspectives on the world rather than entities in the world, for treating ethnicity, race, and nationalism together rather than as separate subfields, and for re-specifying the old debate between primordialist and circumstantialist approaches.
