Receptivity To Library Involvement In Scientific Data Curation: A Case Study At The University Of Colorado Boulder, Kathryn Lage, Barbara Losoff, Jack M. Maness
Receptivity To Library Involvement In Scientific Data Curation: A Case Study At The University Of Colorado Boulder, Kathryn Lage, Barbara Losoff, Jack M. Maness
University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship
Increasingly libraries are expected to play a role in scientific data curation initiatives, i.e., "the management and preservation of digital data over the long-term." This case study offers a novel approach for identifying researchers who are receptive toward library involvement in data curation. The authors interviewed researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and, after analysis, created eight design "personas." Each persona represents an aggregation of researcher attributes and can be used to target strategic relationships for nascent or emerging data management initiatives. These personas are applicable to any academic library seeking to provide data curation support.

Library Collaboration – Exploring New Business Models: An Interview With Marvin Pollard, Marvin Pollard, J. Cory Tucker
Library Collaboration – Exploring New Business Models: An Interview With Marvin Pollard, Marvin Pollard, J. Cory Tucker
Collaborative Librarianship
In the past few years, academic libraries have faced many significant challenges. Due to the financial crisis, the cuts to library collections have caused an evolution in the philosophy of collecting, accessing, and delivering information. Financial constraints have resulted considerations of a “just-in-time” collection philosophy, where libraries have explored new models of collecting information and delivering content to their patrons. Collaborative Librarianship caught up with Marvin Pollard to discuss this issue.

Student Affairs Connection: Promoting The Library Through Co-Curricular Activities, Kathryn M. Crowe
Collaborative Librarianship
Librarians at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) University Libraries developed the “Student Affairs Connection” program in order to market the Libraries to students in co-curricular settings and to collaborate more closely with the Student Affairs Division. The program also provides the opportunity to seek student input on Libraries’ services and resources and to communicate directly with them in a variety of ways. The program has multiple facets: a liaison program where librarians are assigned to specific student organizations and services such as Student Government and Residence Life, a Student Libraries Advisory Council (SLAC) representing diverse groups of …
Assistance Across Borders: American Academic Libraries In Afghanistan And Qatar, Carole Thompson
Assistance Across Borders: American Academic Libraries In Afghanistan And Qatar, Carole Thompson
Collaborative Librarianship
A recent outreach project brought together the American University of Afghanistan and four world renowned US universities with branch campuses in Qatar’s Education City. Librarians in Qatar often collaborate with each other, but this unusual effort was the first time their collaboration reached across international borders to extend assistance to another country. The experience became a cultural exchange that brought together these dramatically different worlds. By utilizing technologies that make connecting and collaborating so easy these days, four librarians with backgrounds in public and technical services worked together to share their expertise, culminating in a learning visit by an AUAF …

Connecting Researchers With Funding Opportunities: A Joint Effort Of The Libraries And The University Research Office, Leslie M. Delserone, Julie A. Kelly, Jody L. Kempf
Collaborative Librarianship
In early 2007, staff from the University of Minnesota Libraries and the Office of the Vice President for Research began a collaboration to present a workshop covering grant resources. The session introduced faculty, staff, and graduate students to four key databases of external granting opportunities as well as intramural funding sources. We explain the context, development, and implementation of this ongoing, popular workshop; mention extensions of the workshop effort; and hope to inspire fellow librarians to identify and explore routes to broad institutional engagement.

Consortia Building Among Libraries In Africa, And The Nigerian Experience, Ngozi Blessing Ossai
Collaborative Librarianship
This study focuses on consortia building among libraries in Africa, with special attention given to Nigeria. It covers the various forms of library consortia: formal and informal as well as cooperative interchanges, including partnerships for resource sharing. Affirming the aim of consortia building as strengthening libraries and library services, the study considers the problems and prospects that are associated with consortia building in Africa and proposes a way forward. It concludes with an affirmation of the need to embrace consortia building among libraries in Africa and an emphasis on the key role ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) plays in consortia …

From Passive To Pervasive: Changing Perceptions Of The Library‟S Role Through Intra-Campus Partnerships, Isaac Gilman, Marita Kunkel
Collaborative Librarianship
Traditional views of librarianship, and of academic libraries, have focused on the library‟s role as a collector of external resources for student and faculty use. As this role is increasingly challenged by the explosion of openly available online content, however, academic libraries must move beyond this limited perception of our utility and expand our role to become partners in a broader range of scholarly activities at our institutions. At Pacific University (Oregon), the University Library has developed a series of partnerships and services (many supported by our institutional repository platform) that extend the Library‟s reach and that lend needed support …

Collaborative Librarianship
From July to October, 2008, Laura Crossett, Joseph Kraus and Steve Lawson organized the Library Camp of the West (http://librarycampwest.pbwiki.com/). This was an unconference that took place on October 10, 2008 at the University of Denver. The authors used many technology tools to organize the event, such as email, wikis, blogs, two tools from Google, the Doodle scheduling Website, Flickr and more. This article will explain how they used those tools to prepare for the unconference.

Collaborative Librarianship: New Light On A Brilliant Concept, Ivan Gaetz
Collaborative Librarianship
Libraries around the world have enjoyed a remarkable history of working together. The present contexts of collaboration in other sectors of society, of a growing literature on collaborative management theory and practice, of the Colorado experience in library collaboration, constitute fertile soil that nurtures new initiatives in collaboration. No Brief Candle provides perspectives on the importance of collaboration for libraries of the 21st century. The new journal, Collaborative Librarianship, builds on the great traditions of the past and seeks to promote library networking, cooperation and partnerships in new ways. Readers are invited to participate in this new venture

Tough Economic Times Call For More Library Cooperation: Report On A Wyoming And Colorado Alliance Conference, Jeffrey Bullington, Janet Lee
Tough Economic Times Call For More Library Cooperation: Report On A Wyoming And Colorado Alliance Conference, Jeffrey Bullington, Janet Lee
Collaborative Librarianship
On April 10, 2009, the Alliance, a consortium of academic, public and special libraries in Colorado and Wyoming, convened a conference on “Cooperation: How to Thrive Despite Reduced Funding.” Drawing on the expertise of national and state leaders in the fields of education and economics, conference participants heard from two keynote speakers about the changing environment of libraries and educational institutions. Referencing these changes, then, various local librarians explored ways collaboratively to advance library resources and services. An overview of these conference presentations perhaps may help libraries and their partners in other regions of the United States and elsewhere gain …
