Demystifying Open Access Workshop, Rose Fortier, Heather James, Martha Jermé, Patricia Berge, Rosemary Del Toro

Rose Fortier

Among the avenues for sharing research and scholarship, open access journals offer an increasingly viable and important option. However, it can be challenging not only to identify these journals but also to evaluate their quality and reach, as well as to weigh the benefits of publishing in them.

To help demystify this process, Raynor Memorial Libraries offered a workshop on evaluating open access journals. Aimed at faculty, graduate students, and others interested in publishing their academic work, the workshop offered an overview of current open access options for sharing research, criteria to help assess the rigor and reliability of open …

It provides practical approaches for motivating students to explore their beliefs, biases, and ways of interpreting the world. This book also includes chapters that bridge the gap between the epistemological stances and threshold concepts held by librarians and faculty, and those held by students, focusing on pedagogies that challenge students to evaluate authority, connect to prior knowledge and construct new knowledge in a world of information abundance. Self-Archived Articles Receive Higher Citation Counts Than Non-Oa Articles From Same Political Science Journals, Amy Atchison, Jonathan Bull Feb 2015

Self-Archived Articles Receive Higher Citation Counts Than Non-Oa Articles From Same Political Science Journals, Amy Atchison, Jonathan Bull

Amy Atchison

The low level of research funding for the social sciences in the US is likely to have a direct and negative effect on researchers’ ability to pay the article processing charges associated with the most common Gold OA business model. But there are other options. Amy Atchison and Jonathan Bull look at the benefits of Green Open Access. Their research indicates self-archived/ Green OA articles, regardless of format, receive significantly higher citation counts than do non-OA articles from the same editions of the same major political science journals.

Landscapes Of Research: Perceptions Of Open Access (Oa) Publishing In The Arts And Humanities, Julia Gross, John Ryan

Julia Gross

It is widely known now that scholarly communication is in crisis, resting on an academic publishing model that is unsustainable. One response to this crisis has been the emergence of Open Access (OA) publishing, bringing scholarly literature out from behind a paywall and making it freely available to anyone online. Many research and academic libraries are facilitating the change to OA by establishing institutional repositories, supporting OA policies, and hosting OA journals. In addition, research funding bodies, such as the Australian Research Council (ARC), are mandating that all published grant research outputs be made available in OA, unless legal and …

Networks Of Digital Humanities Scholars: The Informational And Social Uses And Gratifications Of Twitter, Anabel Quan-Haase, Kim Martin, Lori Mccay-Peet

Lori McCay-Peet Dr.

Big data research is currently split on whether and to what extent Twitter can be characterised as an informational or social network. We contribute to this line of inquiry through an investigation of digital humanities scholars’ uses and gratifications of Twitter. We conducted a thematic analysis of 25 semistructured interview transcripts to learn about these scholars’ professional use of Twitter. Our findings show that Twitter is considered a critical tool for informal communication within DH invisible colleges, functioning at varying levels as both an informational network (learning to ‘Twitter’ and maintaining awareness) and a social network (imagining audiences and engaging …

Purpose – In an educational world with increasing internationalization, digitization, assessment and financial justification, US institutions, especially academic libraries, must justify each new project. Institutional Repositories (IRs) are no exception. The authors attempt to identify factors that might affect the international usage of US IRs as part of assessment efforts to determine an IR's return-on-investment. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was disseminated to IR administrators asking for demographic information, international usage counts for website hits and downloads, and any internationalization efforts connected to the IR in order to determine any influencing factors on an IR's international usage. If You Build It, They Will Come (If You Invite Them Thoughtfully): Institutional Repositories In Academic Libraries, Janelle Wertzberger

Janelle Wertzberger

The road to a successful institutional repository is a long and involved one - so where would an interested library begin? What are some important initial considerations? What options exist for repository platforms? Eric Jeitner will discuss some of those considerations, as well as the methodology used to decide on the staging for Arcadia University's ScholarWorks repository.

After picking a platform, decisions must be made about what work belongs in your IR, and why. How can librarians build campus awareness about open access? Who should be promoting your IR? Janelle Wertzberger will talk about the education and outreach efforts that …

Peering Into The Gap: An Exploration Of Technical Services Outsourcing And The Library Profession, Leanne Olson May 2014

Peering Into The Gap: An Exploration Of Technical Services Outsourcing And The Library Profession, Leanne Olson

Leanne Olson

Outsourcing of cataloguing is becoming more and more common at academic libraries as a way to save time and money. What does outsourcing mean for the academic library profession?

While investigating the topic of deprofessionalization of librarianship, and the professional/paraprofessional divide between librarians and library assistants at academic institutions, we noticed a gap in the literature when it came to technical services/cataloguing departments. Specifically, the people at private firms who contribute much of the cataloguing and metadata to universities are not represented in the literature. What role do they play in librarianship and specifically cataloguing/metadata librarianship, as a profession?  How included …

Over the past year, the University of Rhode Island (URI) has taken some steps towards shifting the default to Open Access for both faculty scholarship and student work. First and foremost, in March 2013, the URI Faculty Senate passed a Harvard-style Open Access mandate. And in February 2013, the Library and the Graduate School began making electronic dissertations and theses openly available through URI’s institutional repository. In this presentation, we will define Open Access policies and discuss why they are important. We will give an overview of our experiences with Open Access advocacy, implementation of policies, and next steps.
