I selected this topic in 1962 primarily from curiosity to discover the facts concerning present day polygamy in Utah, allegedly still abundant. Perhaps the motivation may be described as an amateur detective's zeal. Considerable material seemed to be available about polygamy in Utah before 1890, when the practice was mostly abandoned by the Mormon people, but, apparently, little has been written on this subject covering the period since that date. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to cover polygamy in Utah and close proximity from 1890 to the present (1965). Its scope includes: first, continued plural marriages for two …

A Comparison Of A Selected Group Of Lds Seminary Teachers In Relation To Nine Criteria For Measuring Religious Maturity, Gilbert W. Hull

This thesis was designed as a follow up of a study completed in 1959 which developed nine criteria for measuring religious maturity. The objective of this study was to develop a scale based on the nine criteria and administer it to seminary teachers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to explore the possibility of measuring differences in religious maturity. It was assumed that younger teachers who obtained a degree in a human behaviorally-oriented field of study would show the greatest level of religious maturity.

A Study Of The Concerns Of Eleventh And Twelfth Grade Seminary Students By Sex And Grade In Areas Covered By The Thirty-Five Directional Objectives Of The Lds Seminary System, M. Richard Maxfield

The purpose of this study was to determine the concerns of eleventh and twelfth grade L.D.S. Seminary students in areas covered by each of the thirty-five directional objectives of the L.D.S. Seminary System and to determine whether significant differences occur on the basis of grade and sex. A student inventory was constructed to measure concerns. The question of which directional objectives cause the greatest concern was to be answered for each male and female, junior and senior group. Five null hypotheses were formulated hypothesizing no differences in concerns between juniors and seniors, male and female groups.

Since no writing is entirely objective, it is the contention of this thesis that Dr. Juanita Brooks and Dr. LeRoy R. Hafen, the most authoritative writers of the Southern Nevada and Southern Utah region, were greatly influenced in their writings by the folklore of the region and of the people. The two aspects of folklore which are most prominent in their writings are, first, those which treat the supernatural aspect of divine intervention, and, second, those which surround the struggle for survival.

This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The year 1869 was chosen for the study of the Wasatch Front because it is a datum point; something to work from. Following the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the typically Mormon society at the Wasatch Front oasis began to be more rapidly integrated to the cultural and economic influences from the East. This thesis is a study of the attitudes of employed Latter-day Saint mothers and non-employed Latter-day Saint mothers toward the homemaking role and outside employment.

Two general hypotheses were tested. They were (1) employed Latter-day Saint mothers will have a more favorable attitude toward the homemaking role than non-employed mothers; and (2) employed Latter-day Saint mothers will have a more favorable attitude toward outside employment than non-employed mothers.
