Sikaiana Oral Stories
This recording was made by Johnson Siota was part of linguistic research conducted by Dr. Pita Sharples among the Sikaiana people of the Solomon Islands n the 1960s. The transcription in Sikaiana is by Priscilla Taulupo and the rough translation is by Bill Donner. The story of Taupule was well known to Sikaiana people during my stays in the 1980s on Sikaiana. She came from the Tuvalu and was dropped off on Sikaiana by a trader during her pregnancy, sometime in the late 1800s. Good Christian people often ask members of the staff of the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America, "What can we do? What can we do to become responsibly involved in the civil rights struggle?" There are many things that can and must be done. A plan that has been in the process of development for a number of years, is what LHRAA has called the Rural Summer Vacation Project. Dr. Oliver Harms, President of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, has canceled a meeting originally called for December 8, in which he and his Vice-Presidents were to sit with "front-line" workers, to discuss problems attending the racial revolution as it affects the church. He made his announcement in a letter dated Nov. 16 and sent to all who had previously been invited to participate.

The Lutheran Church in America, meeting in convention June 21-29 in Kansas City, Missouri, passed two recommendations which commit that church body to a broader and more intensive ministry to the Indian American. The two recommendations were embodied in the convention report of the LCA's Board of American Missions, and grew out of a special study conducted for the Board by Miss Henrietta Lund, consultant to the United Nations for the National Lutheran Council. 21 students and instructors from the University of Pennsylvania helped local Negroes erect a $10,000 community center during Christmas vacation. The community center was considered an essential support for nine Negro families who are striking for decent wages, because it will provide a focus for an economic co-operative to sustain those who are opposing the current $3 per day wage scale paid to them for sunrise to sunset labor.

A second meeting has been called by Dr. Oliver Harms, President of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, to discuss the racial revolution and the church . The federal government is not the only agency which chooses to fight aggressively the destructive forces at work in the poverty pockets of our cities. In Kansas City, Faith Lutheran Church had long been serving the Northeast Neighborhood in its direct and straightforward way when, in July of 1965, the newly-created Office of Economic Opportunity decided, upon petition by the church, to devote a portion of its funds to this predominantly Negro, lower-income area of the city.
