Bryan, Populism And Utah, Herbert E. Cihak Jan 1975

Bryan, Populism And Utah, Herbert E. Cihak

Theses and Dissertations

William Jennings Bryan exercised great political power for thirty years in America. Through his efforts the Democratic Party power base was broadened to include Jews, Negroes businessmen, and farmers. Bryan's call for political and social reform found many supporters in the State of Utah.

It is difficult to assess what actually caused William J. Bryan to lose the 1900 Presidential election in Utah. Yet, we must put to rest the conclusion that he lost solely because silver was an unimportant issue to the Utah electorate in 1900. The powerful influence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on …

A Comparison Of Mission Programs Used In The Three Language Training Missions Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Rawn Arthur Wallgren Jan 1975

A Comparison Of Mission Programs Used In The Three Language Training Missions Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Rawn Arthur Wallgren

Theses and Dissertations

Since the instigation of the first language training mission in December, 1961, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been vitally interested in the language instruction of its missionaries. As the number of missionaries called to foreign missions increased, the need for more facilities and instruction grew rapidly. During the week of January 18, 1969, Elder Spencer W. Kimball, Chairman of the Church Missionary Committee, announced expansion of the language training mission program that would go into effect on February 8 of that same year. Languages would not only be taught at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, but …

A Sociological Profile Of Lds Inmates At Utah State Prison, Robert D. Payne Jan 1975

A Sociological Profile Of Lds Inmates At Utah State Prison, Robert D. Payne

Theses and Dissertations

The present thesis is a study of 103 LDS inmates at Utah State Prison. It tests the hypothesis that the inmates are more likely to come from non-cohesive homes. In 1959, Dr. Evan T. Peterson completed a study of three thousand 12-18 year old LDS male youths. Out of Dr. Peterson's respondents, 112 sixteen-eighteen year old subjects were selectively drawn to match the inmate sample in terms of fathers' occupation and education. This stratified sample was used as the control group.

The study confirmed the above family environment hypothesis. It found that when compared to the control group, the LDS …

Guides to Manuscript Collections

This collection consists primarily of correspondence sent from William McClelland while he was in the air force describing his experiences while training and during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, specifically the Philippines. Letters sent to and by the family after William’s declaration as missing in action and presumed death include information about …

The History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In South America, 1945-1960, Joel Alva Flake Jan 1975

The History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In South America, 1945-1960, Joel Alva Flake

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South America between 1945 and 1960 shows growth in numbers of members and strength of those members. The church grew more than 1000 percent during those fifteen years and almost half of all South American branches came under the direction of local, native leadership. The three new missions organized were evidence of the growth being made. Church building was stepped up and Church literature in Spanish and Portuguese became plentiful.

Some problems encountered were opposition of the prevailing church, misunderstandings with government, and the inefficiency of transportation and …

Basic Principles Of Orally Communicating The Gospel As Found In The Doctrine And Covenants, Reed Amussen Benson Jan 1975

Basic Principles Of Orally Communicating The Gospel As Found In The Doctrine And Covenants, Reed Amussen Benson

Theses and Dissertations

In view of the large lay ministry of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who are called upon to preach and teach the gospel, this study was undertaken to see if the latter-day volume of scripture, the Doctrine and Covenants, revealed basic principles associated with the oral communication of the gospel.

These principles became evident through the frequency that they were mentioned and the emphasis they received. They were (1) righteousness, in particular diligence, humility and meekness, prayer and fasting; (2) knowledge; (3) authority; (4) the right means of communicating; (5) the correct message--with the gospel, testimony, and …

The Settlement And Development Of Wayne County, Utah, To 1900, Aldus Devon Chappell Jan 1975

The Settlement And Development Of Wayne County, Utah, To 1900, Aldus Devon Chappell

Theses and Dissertations

Although John C. Fremont had traveled through Wayne County, Utah, in the winter of 1853-54, it was not until 1874 that the first herd of cattle was introduced to Rabbit Valley. Reports soon circulated that here was a new land, conducive to the raising of livestock, and in 1876 about a dozen families entered the valley and began settlement. Families that moved into this area came from various places. Each settler came to make a new life, and came independently of the others. In 1895 the population was nearly 2,000, and by 1970 it had dropped to 1,486.

The Church …
