Privacy- The Times They Are A-Changin', M.G. Michael, Katina Michael

This special section is dedicated to privacy in the information age. Since the rise of mobile social media in particular and the advent of cloud computing few can dispute that the times have changed. Privacy is now understood in context, and within a framework that is completely different to what it once was. The right to be let alone physically seemingly has been replaced by the right to give away as much information as you want virtually. What safeguards can be introduced into such a society? We cannot claim to wish for privacy as a right if we ourselves do …

Ieee T&S Magazine: Undergoing Transformation, Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
Our Magazine is in a transformative period, not only because we are ‘Going Green’ in 2013 but because we are experiencing tremendous growth in quality international submissions. This means that we are increasingly appealing to an international audience with transdisciplinary interests. This has not gone unnoticed by the media, nor by our SSIT readership or wider engineering community.
Prevention Of Fatal Opioid Overdose, Leo Beletsky
Prevention Of Fatal Opioid Overdose, Leo Beletsky
Leo Beletsky
Opioid overdose is a burgeoning public health crisis, accounting for at least 16,000 deaths annually in the United States. Opioid overdose occurs across sex, ethnic, age, and geographic strata and involves both medical and nonmedical opioid use. To date, federal government response has focused primarily on monitoring and securing the drug supply. This Viewpoint suggests various steps necessary to support a more comprehensive approach.
Counterpoint: Reply To Orrenius And Zavodny, Vernon Briggs
Counterpoint: Reply To Orrenius And Zavodny, Vernon Briggs
Vernon M Briggs Jr
[Excerpt] On the fundamental conclusions, the positions argued by Pia Orrenius and Madeline Zavodny and my own are in essential agreement. The immigration policy of the United States is in dire need of changes. The public concern is, in their words, “driven by the increase in immigration in recent years, particularly of unauthorized immigration.” Our mutual worries pertain to the disproportionately adverse impacts of the immigrant inflow on the nation’s low-skilled work force and the high fiscal burden borne by local communities and states with growing immigrant populations. The differences between the two papers center on the approaches taken to …

The Elusive Goal: The Quest For A Credible Immigration Policy, Vernon Briggs
Vernon M Briggs Jr
[Excerpt] The starting point for all immigration reform efforts must be making the immigration system enforceable. Nothing else makes sense. Otherwise, immigration policy is on a squirrel wheel going nowhere. Illegal immigrants will keep coming in defiance of its terms.

Don't Blame Faculty For High Tuition: The Annual Report On The Economic Status Of The Profession, 2003-04, Ronald Ehrenberg
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
[Excerpt] The bottom line is that although faculty and staff salary in-creases obviously contribute to increases in tuition, other factors have played more important roles during the last quarter century. These factors include the escalating costs of benefits for all employees, reductions in state support of public institutions, growing institutional financial-aid costs, expansion of the science and research infrastructure at research universities, and the increasing costs of information technology. If tuition and fee increases had been held to the rate of average faculty salary increases during this period, average tuition and fees would be substantially lower today in both the …

Book Review Of Hacking: The Next Generation (Written By Nitesh Dhanjani, Billy Rios & Brett Hardin), Katina Michael
Book Review Of Hacking: The Next Generation (Written By Nitesh Dhanjani, Billy Rios & Brett Hardin), Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
Hacking: The Next Generation demonstrates just how hackers continue to exploit “back doors”. New ways of working and new ways of communicating have meant that the number of attack vectors continue to rise rapidly. This provides hackers with a greater number of opportunities to penetrate systems using blended approaches while organizations struggle to come up to speed with the latest technology developments and commensurate security capabilities. Dealing with anticipated threats is a lot harder than dealing with known threats.

Tracking and monitoring people as they operate within their personal networks benefits service providers and their constituents but involves hidden risks and costs.
Automatic identification technologies, CCTV cameras, pervasive and mobile networks, wearable computing, location-based services and social networks have traditionally served distinct purposes. However, we have observed patterns of integration, convergence and coexistence among all these innovations within the information and communication technology industry.1For example, ‘location-based social networking’ can draw on a smart phone's capacity to identify a user uniquely, locate him within 1–2m and share this information across his social network in real time. The resulting ability to …

The Economic Community Of West African States And The Responsibility To Protect, Emmanuel Aning, Samuel Atuobi
Emmanuel Kwesi Aning
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was created in 1975 with the primary objective of member states jointly to ‘promote cooperation and integration, leading to the establishment of an economic union in West Africa in order to raise the living standards of its peoples, and to maintain and enhance economic stability’. However, since its creation, the organization has largely pursued security and political agendas due to the prevalence of political instability and security challenges in the West African sub-region. Since the 1960s, when most of its member states gained independence, West Africa has experienced several coups d’état and …

The rapid rise of social media has brought with it an emphasis on the distinct dimensions of the whole person. Social media recognises that the individual has a personal network of extensions- a home life, a work life, a social life, a study life, a hobbyist life, and much more- some of these identities even hidden from full view. Each of these online value networks are now accessible by big business, where opinion leaders and early adopters are easily distinguishable, and where brand commentary between consumers matters manifold more than any form of targeted advertising.

Exploratory Analysis Of The Constitutionality Of Sharia Law In Some Nigerian States, Andrew Ewoh, Chinelo Okekeocha
Exploratory Analysis Of The Constitutionality Of Sharia Law In Some Nigerian States, Andrew Ewoh, Chinelo Okekeocha
Andrew I.E. Ewoh
Nigeria has a federal system of government where political power is shared between the national and state governments. Nigeria returned to this system of governance on May 29, 1999 after sixteen years of military rule. In terms of religion, the country is uniquely split between Christians and Muslims. Christians are the majority in the south, while Muslims dominate the north. In 2000, Governor Sani of Zamfara State introduced an Islamic law popularly known as Sharia in his state. Eleven other northern states immediately followed suit. The northern states and the federal government were at strife on the constitutionality of an …

Illegal Immigration And The Dilemma Of American Unions, Vernon Briggs
Illegal Immigration And The Dilemma Of American Unions, Vernon Briggs
Vernon M Briggs Jr
[Excerpt] Over its long and often turbulent evolution, the American labor movement has confronted few issues as persistently and as difficult has those related to subject of immigration. By definition, immigration affects the size of the labor force at any given time as well as its geographical distribution and skill composition. These vital influences, in turn, affect national, regional and local labor market conditions. Most immigrants directly join the labor force upon entering the country, as do eventually most of their family members. Hence, organized labor never has ignored immigration trends. As Samuel Gompers, one of the founders of the …

Hard Choices: Japan's Post-Fukushima Energy Policy In The 21st Century, Paul Scalise
Paul J. Scalise
As Japan raucously debates the future of nuclear power and renewable energy in both the National Diet and the courtroom of public opinion, some observers have wondered in which direction Japan's once "quiet politics" of national energy policy, in which highly organized interest groups dominated the policy process in arenas shielded from public view, would take the country now that energy has become a "high salience issue" (Culpepper 2011). Can Japan achieve a nuclear-free society without risk of rolling blackouts? Are energy security and environmental sustainability fundamentally compatible or mutually exclusive? Is economic efficiency still possible in an energy market …

Advancing knowledge through robust research is an honourable aim- being scientific, finding the right methodology, executing project phases meticulously, and reporting on the outcomes as objectively and accurately as possible. But may I begin my inaugural editorial by saying that an even higher ideal to advancing knowledge is critiquing it as it happens. Reflective practice is not just something to be done by academics in their teaching- reflective practice is what we should all be doing as we go about undertaking our various day-to-day work tasks. For the engineer engaged in research and development, whether in industry or government, reflective …
The Economic Downturn Is Accentuated By Labor Market Deficiencies Of U.S. Immigration Policies: A Mandate For Change, Vernon Briggs
The Economic Downturn Is Accentuated By Labor Market Deficiencies Of U.S. Immigration Policies: A Mandate For Change, Vernon Briggs
Vernon M Briggs Jr
[Excerpt] The depth and length of the economic downturn has already led federal policymakers to implement fiscal policy remedies (i.e., government spending and tax cuts) of unprecedented proportions. These efforts have been intended to enlarge labor demand by stimulating aggregate spending in the lagging economy. Likewise, the Federal Reserve has pursued an expansionary monetary policy (i.e., increasing the money supply) that has driven interest rates to historically low levels and held them there longer than has ever before been imagined. Despite the massive scale of these policy initiatives, they have been of little avail. Throughout this troublesome period, however, the …

Building Democracy In Japan, Mary Alice Haddad
Building Democracy In Japan, Mary Alice Haddad
Mary Alice Haddad
How is democracy made real? How does an undemocratic country create new institutions and transform its polity such that democratic values and practices become integral parts of its political culture? These are some of the most pressing questions of our times, and they are the central inquiry of Building Democracy in Japan. Using the Japanese experience as starting point, this book develops a new approach to the study of democratization that examines state-society interactions as a country adjusts its existing political culture to accommodate new democratic values, institutions and practices. With reference to the country's history, the book focuses on …

Intent To Purchase A Plug-In Electric Vehicle: A Survey Of Early Impressions In Large U.S. Cites, Rachel Krause
Intent To Purchase A Plug-In Electric Vehicle: A Survey Of Early Impressions In Large U.S. Cites, Rachel Krause
Rachel M. Krause
This paper examines consumer stated intent to purchase plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and assesses the factors that increase or decrease interest. It utilizes a survey of 2,302 adult drivers in 21 large U.S. cities. The survey occurred in early fall 2011, before vehicle manufacturers and dealers began information and marketing campaigns, and thus serves to document early impressions of this emerging transport technology. The central finding of the analysis is that, given current battery technology and public perceptions, overall stated intent to purchase or lease PEVs is low. Interest in plug-in hybrid technology is somewhat greater than interest in all-electric …
