Development And Validation Of The Workplace Dignity Scale, Benjamin Thomas, Kristen Lucas Dec 2018

Development And Validation Of The Workplace Dignity Scale, Benjamin Thomas, Kristen Lucas

Kristen Lucas

As organizational scholars have become critically attuned to human flourishing in the workplace, interest in workplace dignity has grown rapidly. Yet, a valid scale to measure employees’ perceptions of dignity in the workplace has yet to be developed, thereby limiting potential empirical insights. To fill this need, we conducted a systematic, multi‐study scale development project. Using data generated from focus groups (N = 62), an expert panel (N = 11), and two surveys (N = 401 and N = 542), we developed and validated an 18‐item Workplace Dignity Scale (WDS). Our studies reveal evidence in support of the WDS’s psychometric …

From Little Princess To Mother Of Dragons: Daenerys Targaryen’S Heroine’S Journey, Hallie M. Whiting Dec 2018

From Little Princess To Mother Of Dragons: Daenerys Targaryen’S Heroine’S Journey, Hallie M. Whiting

Scott T. Allison

In Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen’s name contains almost all of her life: Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons (Daenerys Targaryen, 2017). While the lengthiness of her name certainly speaks to her ability as a conqueror and ruler, it does not do her life story justice. Daenerys serves as a heroine to not only the fictional world which …

Identification And Parasocial Relationships With Characters From Star Wars: The Force Awakens., Alice E. Hall

Alice Hall

This study investigated identification and parasocial relationships (PSRs) with media characters by examining viewers’ responses to the movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens through an online survey of 113 audience members who saw the film in a theater within a month of its release. Participants reported stronger PSR and identification with the more familiar characters from the first trilogy than with the new characters introduced in the film, although the association with identification was limited to older participants. Star Wars fanship was associated with identification and PSR for old and new characters. Familiarity with the earlier films was associated with …

Shwartz, Morris, And Penna, 2019. Psychometric Properties Of The Saint Louis University Mental Status Examination.Pdf, Susan Shwartz

Susan Shwartz

The Saint Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) Examination is a brief screening measure for mild neurocognitive disorder developed for use with veterans. To date, there has been a paucity of research on its psychometric properties. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the psychometric properties of the SLUMS in a referred sample to a specialty clinic. Using a sample of 148 male veterans referred to a Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Clinic for evaluation, the ability of the SLUMS to discriminate between MCI versus Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) or no diagnosis was compared to results from a more comprehensive neuropsychological …

Foreign Language Learners’ Use Of Metacognitive Strategies In Reading Comprehension Tasks: Effects Of Spanish Proficiency And Task Language, Olivia Curreri

Olivia Curreri

Previous research has been conducted on Foreign Language Learners’ classroom performance, and separately on reading comprehension and metacognition. There is a gap in the literature regarding the intersection of these topics. The present study investigated students’ use of metacognitive strategies on a reading comprehension task in English and Spanish. The participants included Trinity College undergraduates with varying levels of Spanish proficiency. Participants completed a language test for placement in different categories of Spanish proficiency. They were given one passage with comprehension questions in each language and then reported their use of metacognition. As predicted, students with higher levels of Spanish …

Difference In Attitudes Toward Crew Resource Management Based On Nationality, Christoph Zurman, Herbert O. Hoffmann, Hans-Joachim K. Ruff-Stahl Dec 2018

Difference In Attitudes Toward Crew Resource Management Based On Nationality, Christoph Zurman, Herbert O. Hoffmann, Hans-Joachim K. Ruff-Stahl

Hans-Joachim Ruff-Stahl

The E-3A Airborne Early Warning and Control System aircraft operates with multinational crewmembers from 15 different nations on 12 different aircrew positions. Given this non-standard cultural environment, the authors explored the differences in the attitude toward Crew Resource Management (CRM), based on nationality, and how these differences could be used as a predictor for other nationalities attitudes. The potential benefit of this study may be, that CRM methods could be developed further to either work universally, independent to national or cultural backgrounds, or be adjusted for different cultural contexts in order to be even more effective. Primary data was gathered …

Pilot Study: Measuring Attitudes Toward Ramp Resource Management, Nadine G. Muecklich, Hans-Joachim K. Ruff-Stahl, Ivan Sikora

Hans-Joachim Ruff-Stahl

Ramp resource management (RRM) is a highly flight-safety-relevant, but to date widely overlooked, part of the air transportation system. Organizational, national, professional, and safety cultures play an important role in setting up resource management and training. This pilot study evaluates the influence of national culture on attitudes toward RRM, based on Geert Hofstede’s Values Survey Module. A slightly adapted version of this survey module was distributed to ramp personnel in Germany and national cultural indices were generated. A one-way analysis of variance revealed that, while some influence of national culture in RRM could be concluded, the majority of the results …

Sectumsempra: An Analysis Of The Heroic Transformation Of Severus Snape, Jake C. Cardwell Dec 2018

Sectumsempra: An Analysis Of The Heroic Transformation Of Severus Snape, Jake C. Cardwell

Scott T. Allison

This chapter seeks to examine the character Severus Snape and his heroism. I will go about this task by analyzing Snape’s life and legacy, and judging him through several lenses of heroism science. Most importantly, the goal of this discussion is to determine whether or not Snape is truly a “hero.” Whether you love him or hate him, Severus Snape is one of the most recognizable literary characters of the twenty-first century, and his morality and merits are still talked about by fans of the Harry Potter franchise. I will use traditional archetypes and theories of heroism science to determine …
