Previous studies done on the correlation between specific curiosity and intelligence have been inconclusive. In the present study, a test of state specific curiosity and a test of intelligence were administered to 76 Ss from two introductory psychology courses. Three hypotheses were tested. These were, (a) that a significant specific curiosity-intelligence correlation would exist, (b) that the specific curiosity-verbal subscale correlation would be higher than the specific curiosity-abstraction sub-scale correlation, and (c) that there would be a sex difference in the specific curiosity-intelligence correlations. The data did not support hypothesis (a) or (b). However, they did support hypothesis (c). …

Effects Of Complexity, Incongruity And Content On Cartoon Humor Appreciation., Robert Goodkind

Jerry M. Suls proposed an information processing model for the understanding of cartoon humor. The model describes two processes involved in humor appreciation: recognizing the incongruity (the "incongruity" variable), and finding a logical explanation or solution to the incongruity (the "complexity" variable). Suls states that there are no other operative variables in cartoon humor appreciation besides these two. The implication of this is that cartoon content should have no effect on humor c1ppreciation when incongruity arid complexity are controlled. The present study was a test of Suls' model. Results of this study do seem to indicate that learning disabled children enrolled in a heterogeneously grouped classroom develop appraisals of self in academic areas separate from a more general, overall perception of self. If this is the case, estimates of a global self-concept may cloud important differences in the individual components of self-concept.

A Variation Of Sternberg's Paradigm, Robert J. Smillie

An investigation was carried out to test Sternberg’s stage theory using his additive-factor method. Three factors were proposed that would have additive effects on RT and two factors that would not. Ss were presented stimuli in the form of colors and sound frequencies under varying combinations of mode, stimulus quality, list length, and response type. Ss were also blocked according to sex. Results revealed only stimulus quality and list length to be additive. Response type interacted with list length. Males were faster than females but the sex factor was differentially influencing two of the proposed stages in Sternberg’s model. The …

Despite considerable interest in the problem of creativity, both in psychology and in other fields, there is still no standard definition of the term. Guilford (1 9 6 7 ) defines creativity by making a distinction between convergent thinking and divergent thinking. In convergent thinking, according to Guilford, there is a single right answer or best answer to a problem, while in divergent thinking there is not. He uses the term divergent thinking interchangeably with creativity. The behavior of the American black bear, Ursus americanus, has been poorly documented in the past. This investigation is a preliminary analysis of the diurnal activities of a hand-reared female and a captive wild male black bear, and the successful breeding of another pair of captive black bears.

Two black bears were kept in a semi-naturalistic enclosure at Tremont within the Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GSMNP). Their daily activities were recorded by a scan sampling technique, supplemented by photographic accounts. The major purpose of this experiment was to extend the experimental analysis of temporal compounds to differential operant conditioning, and to study a variety of tasks differing in their difficulty due to the presence of various components and the assignment of reinforcement contingencies. After initial bar-press training in a Skinner Box equipped with a response bar, food delivery cup, and the mechanics to present sound and light stimulation, 48 female albino rats were randomly assigned to 6 groups for discrimination training. Prior exposure to difficult motor conflicts has been shown to impede later performance in resolving easier conflicts. To determine if similar negative transfer occurred with verbal conflicts, 80 undergraduates resolved conflicts formed by pairig seven personal characteristic adjectives. Additional transfer effects associated with moving from easier to more difficult conflicts were also examied. Using a conflict resolution board, one group of Ss resolved 10 double approach-avoidance (DAP-AV} conflicts followed by 10 approach-approach (AP-AP} conflicts, and another group transferred from AP-AP to DAP-AV. Two additional groups, which resolved 20 conflicts of the same type (AP-AP or DAP-AV), were used in assessing …

The purpose of the present experiment was to compare the effectiveness of E-supplied and S-originated descriptive sentence and mediation mnemonics to a simple repetition con- dition in a modified paired-associate learning task. The S-originated devices were significantly superior to the E­ supplied aids at the 2-day and 1-week retention intervals. All mnemonic conditions produced significantly higher retention than the mediation E-supplied and SR conditions at the 8-week level.

There were no differences in recall between the two S-originated or between the-E-supplied conditions at the 2-day and 1-week intervals. It was concluded that the source of the mnemonic was the crucial …

In this paper, I will strive to bring together, both from literature and from my own experiences, pertinent information concerning Navaho witchcraft for the purpose of (1) presenting this information to the education staff at Wingate High School in the form of in-service training and (2) making this same information available to other Navaho high schools. It is hoped that this will help staff members to better understand the beliefs, fears, and emotional turmoils of the students with whom they are working and, thereby, be able to deal with them in a more knowledgeable and understanding manner.
