This is Old Dominion University's eighth annual State of the Region report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, Roseann Runte. The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a sound …

Congress And The U. S.-China Relationship 1949-1979, Guangqiu Xu
University of Akron Press Publications
Guangqiu Xu, a native of China fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese, has written an exhaustive study of United States-China relations during the Cold War, with a special focus on the role of the U.S. Congress in influencing Sino-American policy.
Based upon extensive archival research in Chinese and American sources, Professor Xu's book is comprehensive and original. It is a detailed account of the interactions between Congress and the White House as the United States forged its policies regarding the world's most populous nation. Covering the period from the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949 to the …

Punishment And Political Order, Keally D. Mcbride
Punishment And Political Order, Keally D. Mcbride
2019 USF Faculty and Staff Books
Most of us think of punishment as an ugly display of power. But punishment also tells us something about the ideals and aspirations of a people and their government. How a state punishes reveals whether or not it is confident in its own legitimacy and sovereignty. Punishment and Political Order examines the questions raised by the state's exercise of punitive power--from what it is about human psychology that desires sanction and order to how the state can administer pain while calling for justice. Keally McBride's book demonstrates punishment's place at the core of political administration and the stated ideals of …

The State Of The Parties (Fifth Edition), John C. Green, Daniel J. Coffey
The State of the Parties Fifth Edition
Every four years, The State of the Parties brings readers up to date on American party organizations and activities. The fifth edition considers the impact of the 2004 election and offers insight into the “state of the parties” now that the twenty-first century is under way. The research effort that produced this book is the product of more than a decade of scholarship. Our goal has been to bring together party scholars from around the nation to discuss the state of U.S. party politics and new avenues of research. The contributor team for this edition includes a mix of veteran …
[Introduction To] Inventing Leadership: The Challenge Of Democracy, J. Thomas Wren
[Introduction To] Inventing Leadership: The Challenge Of Democracy, J. Thomas Wren
Bookshelf
The tension between ruler and ruled in democratic societies has never been satisfactorily resolved, and the competing interpretations of this relationship lie at the bottom of much modern political discourse. In this fascinating book, Thomas Wren clarifies and elevates the debates over leadership by identifying the fundamental premises and assumptions that underlie past and present understandings.
[Introduction To] The Values Of Presidential Leadership, Terry L. Price, J. Thomas Wren
[Introduction To] The Values Of Presidential Leadership, Terry L. Price, J. Thomas Wren
Bookshelf
In this volume, presidential scholars from communication, history, law, philosophy, political science, and psychology explore the broader phenomenon of leadership. Like leadership more generally, presidential leadership is a value-laden activity, an exercise in communication, and a collective enterprise. It is also subject to psychological and historical barriers to interpretation. Finally, presidential leadership is instrumental: presidents must achieve their valued ends. Contributors address each of these aspects of leadership in essays on how presidential values are determined or constructed, how they are condoned and criticized, how they are packaged and conveyed, and how they are interpreted and acted upon.
