The 2000 Presidential Election In Louisiana, Susan E. Howell

The University of New Orleans Survey Research Center interviewed 658 registered voters by telephone between October 15 and 22. Results are reported for both the complete cross-section of registered voters and for the subset of likely voters, identified by the Gallup likely voter scale, which asks seven questions about voting habits. Regardless of whether you consider likely voters or all registered voters, George W. Bush enjoys a comfortable lead in Louisiana as of October 22. The margin is largely based on the 40% lead he has among white voters, who comprise over 70% of the electorate. Predictably, black voters overwhelmingly …

Complexities Of The Gender Gap, Susan E. Howell, Christine L. Day

Gender differences in political attitudes among whites arise from a variety of sources that may vary from issue to issue. Explanations based on gender-based social roles, basic value differences, socioeconomic status, and women's autonomy are tested in this study through an examination of both compositional and conditional effects. Compositional effects occur when men and women differ on an explanatory variable. Conditional effects occur when a variable has differential effects on the policy preferences of women and men. Using data from the 1996 National Election Study, OLS regression and logit results demonstrate the complex sources of gender gaps across issue areas. …

Public Opinion On The Third Term City Charter Amendment (April, 2000), Susan E. Howell

This survey presents the opportunity to examine whether opinions have shifted in support for the third term charter change over the last year. It represents voters' opinions on a controversial issue that has received an increased amount of media attention. When compared with voters' opinions in 1999, the results demonstrate that support for the charter change has declined. A closer look shows that this decline in support was primarily due to a shift in blacks' opinions. It seems that greater exposure to the issue leads to greater opposition. The third term charter change still remains a racially divisive issue. Only …
