The Role Of Natural Law In American Political Thought, Priscilla Deane Biggs Jun 1960

The Role Of Natural Law In American Political Thought, Priscilla Deane Biggs

Political Science ETDs

It has been a rather consistent pattern for natural law thinking to flourish in times of crisis and times of "faith," varied as the "faiths" have been. Accordingly, it does not seem overly surprising to find in our present period of high tension many troubled souls being drawn toward the old natural concept and advocating its revival, advocating it as a kind of "natural cement" to paste together a badly disunited world.

A Political Study Of Federal Aid To Education At Utah State University, Richard Yates Merrell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the present-day world of change, every time we pick up the paper we read of something new in our society. We now have new rockets, new satellites, new computers, and new methods or destruction. There are also many "new" things in the field of education. One of these is federal aid to education. As yet, there seems to be no consensus on the merits of this supposedly new approach to educational finance. Some view it as a kind or plague; others see it as an unmixed blessing. Actually, federal aid to education is quite old and quite common.

Theses and Dissertations

In the year of 1903, the right of Reed Smoot to take his seat in the United States Senate was challenged in a protest signed by nineteen prominent citizens from Utah. The protest was submitted to the Senate Committee of Privileges and Elections, a member of which was Fred T. Dubois, Senator from Idaho. The protest charged that the Mormon Church was still practicing polygamy and exercising political domination of its members and that therefore Reed Smoot, an Apostle and leader of this church, was unfit for senatorial obligations. Dubois, believing the worst concerning these charges, took it upon himself …

A Comprehensive Study To Determine The Teachers' Role In Politics, Hollie Wilford Crawford Jan 1960

A Comprehensive Study To Determine The Teachers' Role In Politics, Hollie Wilford Crawford

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the role, if any, that a teacher should play in the political life of the community. There existed, and still exists, a great variance of opinion even on the part of teachers as to their political role. Some would have teachers set themselves completely apart from anything that even remotely resembles politics. Others would have teachers become deeply involved in the political life of the community. Heretofore no basis for participation in politics has been given other than personal opinion.

Should teachers participate in partisan politics? This single question states …

A Study Of The Congressional Hearings On The Dismissal Of General Macarthur, Byford Scott Jan 1960

A Study Of The Congressional Hearings On The Dismissal Of General Macarthur, Byford Scott

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The eye witnesses against MacArthur were members of the Truman Administration. Acheson and Marshall were the principal critics of MacArthur’s stand. Secretary Acheson testified that MacArthur had done a fine job in Japan and our allies agreed without policy there. Acheson replied to the alleged lack of policy by making a distinction between our policy and our war aims. Our policy in Korea looked to a unified, independent democratic government, but our war aim was to stop the attack on South Korea. Regarding the proposal that the United States take unilateral action if our allies did not support us, he …

An Inquiry Into The Influences Of American Democracy On The Arab Middle East, 1819-1958, Edward A. Raleigh

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to present en analysis of the American contributions to democracy in the Arab Middle East. Research will be confined, for the most part, to the American impact upon the United Arab Republic, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Iraq between 1819 and 1958. Yemen, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the Trucial Sheikdoms will be treated incidentally because the American impact was so slight as to be virtually non-existent; while Turkey, although not an Arab country, will be studied in some detail in the chapter on Education primarily because of Robert College and the part it played …

The Arab Boycott Of Israel, Hussein Abu-Bakr El Kadi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

An intelligent understanding of international relationships requires a special study of the critical places where continuous crisis arises. It was felt, therefore, desirable to examine a significant aspect of the conflict between the Arab World and the State of Israel that provides the subject of this study.

The economic boycott of Israel has assumed a grave significance in international relations, yet to the author's knowledge this subject has not been investigated in a scholarly and comprehensive manner in any available publication. The writer embarks on this topic in the hope that it may provide the American student of Middle Eastern …

African Nationalism In Tanganyika, Amon James Nsekela Jan 1960

African Nationalism In Tanganyika, Amon James Nsekela

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Tanganyika’s astonishing constitutional progress, achieved almost without friction, he's brought the country to the threshold of the political autonomy within a decade of organized African nationalism. July 7, 1954, was a historical day for it was then when the Tanganyika African National Union (T.A.N.U.) was born in Der es Zalasa, the country’s capital, with Julius K. Nyerere as president. From that day one, T.A.N.U. has struggled relentlessly for the independence of Tanganyika. Hence the significant constitutional changes announced in the Legislative Council by the governor, Sir Richard Turnbull, on December 15, 1959, represented an important achievement for the African nationalist …
