The Logic Model, Participatory Evaluation And Out Of School Art Programs, Kimberly A. Kleinhans Jul 2020

The Logic Model, Participatory Evaluation And Out Of School Art Programs, Kimberly A. Kleinhans

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The logic model and participatory evaluation are two popular methods of conducting program evaluation. Although both methods have their strengths, each has distinct weaknesses which can be ameliorated by combining them both together. The combined method is used to evaluate an out of school art program at a museum. Using both the logic model and participatory evaluation yielded beneficial results with more accurate representation of program outcomes.

How Intelligent Ci Instruction Gives Law Students A Competitive Edge, Heather Simmons, Beau Steenken, Liz Whittington, Joshua Pluta Jul 2020

How Intelligent Ci Instruction Gives Law Students A Competitive Edge, Heather Simmons, Beau Steenken, Liz Whittington, Joshua Pluta

Presentations

"Competitive intelligence" (CI) is a term that gets bandied about across many sectors, but how exactly do law firms use it to further their business? Academics are aware of CI as a concept, but teaching students how to conduct competitive intelligence requires a more nuanced understanding of how it is actually used. In a discussion moderated by a newer academic librarian who will be teaching competitive intelligence for the first time, a firm librarian will share insights into how competitive intelligence can and should be used, and an academic librarian who regularly teaches competitive intelligence will offer tips on how …

A Generalized Family Of Lifetime Distributions And Survival Models, Mahmoud Aldeni, Felix Famoye, Carl Lee Jul 2020

A Generalized Family Of Lifetime Distributions And Survival Models, Mahmoud Aldeni, Felix Famoye, Carl Lee

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In lifetime data, the hazard function is a common technique for describing the characteristics of lifetime distribution. Monotone increasing or decreasing, and unimodal are relatively simple hazard function shapes, which can be modeled by many parametric lifetime distributions. However, fewer distributions are capable of modeling diverse and more complicated shapes such as N-shaped, reflected N-shaped, W-shaped, and M-shaped hazard rate functions. A generalized family of lifetime distributions, the uniform-R{generalized lambda} (U-R{GL}) are introduced and the corresponding survival models are derived, and applied to two lifetime data sets. The survival model is applied to a right censored lifetime data set.

A Revised Logic Model For Educational Program Evaluation, Zsa-Zsa Booker Jul 2020

A Revised Logic Model For Educational Program Evaluation, Zsa-Zsa Booker

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The logic model is an evaluation tool popularly used for obtaining grant funding. Its limitations make it unlike other theory driven evaluation methods. A critical examination of the logic model leads to the construction of an enriched revised logic model.

Forward And Backward Continuation Ratio Models For Ordinal Response Variables, Xing Liu, Haiyan Bai Jul 2020

Forward And Backward Continuation Ratio Models For Ordinal Response Variables, Xing Liu, Haiyan Bai

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

There are different types of continuation ratio (CR) models for ordinal response variables. The different model equations, corresponding parameterizations, and nonequivalent results are confusing. The purpose of this study is to introduce different types of forward and backward CR models, demonstrate how to implement these models using Stata, and compare the results using data from the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002).

Identifying Which Of J Independent Binomial Distributions Has The Largest Probability Of Success, Rand Wilcox Jul 2020

Identifying Which Of J Independent Binomial Distributions Has The Largest Probability Of Success, Rand Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Let p1,…, pJ denote the probability of a success for J independent random variables having a binomial distribution and let p(1) ≤ … ≤ p(J) denote these probabilities written in ascending order. The goal is to make a decision about which group has the largest probability of a success, p(J). Let p̂1,…, p̂J denote estimates of p1,…,pJ, respectively. The strategy is to test J − 1 hypotheses comparing the group with the largest estimate to each of the J − 1 …

Jmasm 53: Miccerird, Michael Lance

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Fortran 77 and 90 modules (REALPOPS.lib) exist for invoking the 8 distributions estimated by Micceri (1989). These respective modules were created by Sawilowsky et al. (1990) and Sawilowsky and Fahoome (2003). The MicceriRD (Micceri’s Real Distributions) Python package was created because Python is increasingly used for data analysis and, in some cases, Monte Carlo simulations.

Bayesian Analysis Of Extended Cox Model With Time-Varying Covariates Using Bootstrap Prior, Oyebayo R. Olaniran, Mohd Asrul A. Abdullah

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A new Bayesian estimation procedure for extended cox model with time varying covariate was presented. The prior was determined using bootstrapping technique within the framework of parametric empirical Bayes. The efficiency of the proposed method was observed using Monte Carlo simulation of extended Cox model with time varying covariates under varying scenarios. Validity of the proposed method was also ascertained using real life data set of Stanford heart transplant. Comparison of the proposed method with its competitor established appreciable supremacy of the method.

Regression: Determining Which Of P Independent Variables Has The Largest Or Smallest Correlation With The Dependent Variable, Plus Results On Ordering The Correlations Winsorized, Rand Wilcox Jul 2020

Regression: Determining Which Of P Independent Variables Has The Largest Or Smallest Correlation With The Dependent Variable, Plus Results On Ordering The Correlations Winsorized, Rand Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In a regression context, consider p independent variables and a single dependent variable. The paper addresses two goals. The first is to determine the extent it is reasonable to make a decision about whether the largest estimate of the Winsorized correlations corresponds to the independent variable that has the largest population Winsorized correlation. The second is to determine the extent it is reasonable to decide that the order of the estimates of the Winsorized correlations correctly reflects the true ordering. Both goals are addressed by testing relevant hypotheses. Results in Wilcox (in press a) suggest using a multiple comparisons procedure …

Jmasm 52: Extremely Efficient Permutation And Bootstrap Hypothesis Tests Using R, Christina Chatzipantsiou, Marios Dimitriadis, Manos Papadakis, Michail Tsagris

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Re-sampling based statistical tests are known to be computationally heavy, but reliable when small sample sizes are available. Despite their nice theoretical properties not much effort has been put to make them efficient. Computationally efficient method for calculating permutation-based p-values for the Pearson correlation coefficient and two independent samples t-test are proposed. The method is general and can be applied to other similar two sample mean or two mean vectors cases.

Empirical Comparison Of Tests For One-Factor Anova Under Heterogeneity And Non-Normality: A Monte Carlo Study, Diep Nguyen, Eunsook Kim, Yan Wang, Thanh Vinh Pham, Yi-Hsin Chen, Jeffrey D. Kromrey Jul 2020

Empirical Comparison Of Tests For One-Factor Anova Under Heterogeneity And Non-Normality: A Monte Carlo Study, Diep Nguyen, Eunsook Kim, Yan Wang, Thanh Vinh Pham, Yi-Hsin Chen, Jeffrey D. Kromrey

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Although the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) F test is one of the most popular statistical tools to compare group means, it is sensitive to violations of the homogeneity of variance (HOV) assumption. This simulation study examines the performance of thirteen tests in one-factor ANOVA models in terms of their Type I error rate and statistical power under numerous (82,080) conditions. The results show that when HOV was satisfied, the ANOVA F or the Brown-Forsythe test outperformed the other methods in terms of both Type I error control and statistical power even under non-normality. When HOV was violated, the Structured Means …

Data, Stats, Go: Navigating The Intersections Of Cataloging, E-Resource, And Web Analytics Reporting, Rachel S. Evans, Wendy Moore, Jessica Pasquale, Andre Davison

Presentations

Do you trudge through gathering statistics at fiscal or calendar year-end? Do you wonder why you track certain things, thinking many seem outdated or irrelevant? Many places seem to keep counting certain statistics because "that's what they've always done." For e-resources, how do you integrate those with physical counts and reconcile the variations (updated e-resources versus re-cataloged physical items)? What about repository downloads and other web traffic? The quantity of stats that libraries track is staggering and keeps growing. This program will encourage attendees to stop and evaluate what and why they're gathering data and help identify possible alternatives to …

Before Disaster Strikes: Preparing America To Be Disaster Resilient, Cole Hoyt Jul 2020

Before Disaster Strikes: Preparing America To Be Disaster Resilient, Cole Hoyt

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Major natural disasters in the United States are occurring more frequently and are causing more damage and destruction than ever before in the nation’s history. With the increased number and intensity of natural disasters, America’s failing infrastructure and current resiliency plan are inadequate to successfully prepare and respond to such catastrophic events. As a direct result, natural disasters in the United States cause scores of deaths and injuries, inflict billions of dollars’ worth of damage per disaster, and make it increasingly more difficult for Americans to recover and return to a sense of normalcy.

The World Health Organization (“WHO”), offers …

Human Supremacy As Posthuman Risk, Daniel Estrada Jul 2020

Human Supremacy As Posthuman Risk, Daniel Estrada

The Journal of Sociotechnical Critique

Human supremacy is the widely held view that human interests ought to be privileged over other interests as a matter of ethics and public policy. Posthumanism is the historical situation characterized by a critical reevaluation of anthropocentrist theory and practice. This paper draws on animal studies, critical posthumanism, and the critique of ideal theory in Charles Mills and Serene Khader to address the appeal to human supremacist rhetoric in AI ethics and policy discussions, particularly in the work of Joanna Bryson. This analysis identifies a specific risk posed by human supremacist policy in a posthuman context, namely the classification of …

Southwest Pacific Tropical Cyclone Frequency And Intensity Related To Observed And Modeled Geophysical And Aerosol Variables, Rupsa Bhowmick

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation focuses on western region of Southwest Pacific Ocean (SWPO)

basin (135E - 180, and 5S - 35S) tropical cyclone (TC) climatology using observed

and modeled data. The classification-based machine learning approach

identifies the synoptic geophysical and aerosol environment favorable or unfavorable

for TC intensification and intensity change prior to landfall incorporating

observational and satellite data. A multiple poisson regression model with varying

temporal monthly lags was used to build a relationship between the number of

monthly TC days with basin wide average dust aerosol optical depth (AOD), sea

surface temperature (SST), and upper ocean temperature (UOT). This idea …

Lulling Waters: A Poetry Reading For Real-Time Music Generation Through Emotion Mapping, Ashley Muniz, Toshihisa Tsuruoka Jul 2020

Lulling Waters: A Poetry Reading For Real-Time Music Generation Through Emotion Mapping, Ashley Muniz, Toshihisa Tsuruoka

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Through a poetic narrative, “Lulling Waters” tells the story of a whale overcoming the loss of his mother, who passed away from ingesting plastic, as he attempts to escape from the polluted oceanic world. The live performance of this poem utilizes a software system called Soundwriter, which was developed with the goal of enriching the oral storytelling experience through music. This video demonstrates how Soundwriter’s real-time hybrid system was able to analyze “Lulling Waters” through its lexical and auditory features. Emotionally salient words were given ratings based on arousal, valence, and dominance while the emotionally charged prosodic features of the …

Complications Of The Climate Change Narrative Within The Lives Of Climate Refugees, Raphaella Mascia Jul 2020

Complications Of The Climate Change Narrative Within The Lives Of Climate Refugees, Raphaella Mascia

Department of Environmental Studies Student Scholarship

With projections of rapidly increasing numbers of climate refugees in the next decades, the discourse surrounding climate refugees becomes ever more pertinent within the field of sustainable development and the public sphere. I offer an alternative analysis of the processes which surround “knowing” and “defining” climate refugees by employing an interpretive framework which disseminates the term “narrative” according to Jean François Lyotard’s The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge. In the discourse surrounding climate refugees, two main narratives interact with each other: the dominant climate change narrative and the individual narratives of climate refugees themselves. I contend that the …

Spatial Statistical Approaches To Water Quality Modelling, Janardan Mainali Jul 2020

Spatial Statistical Approaches To Water Quality Modelling, Janardan Mainali

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation aims to advance the existing knowledge related to spatial modeling of water quality by exploring and introducing innovative approaches to different spatial conceptualizations for water quality modeling and incorporating upstream-downstream relations in geographically weighted regression. By carrying out a systematic literature review of four different classes of spatial models in Chapter One, this dissertation identifies the following major research gaps: lack of incorporation of multiscale processes, not enough emphasis on spatial weights matrices, and unavailability of upstream-downstream relationships in geographically weighted regressions. Chapters Two and Three were designed to address these gaps in the literature. In Chapter Two, …

Knowledge of the individual capacity building and research infrastructure requirements in SIDS is necessary for national and international efforts to be effective in supporting SIDS to address nationally-identified sustainable development priorities. Here, we present an assessment of human resources and institutional capacities in SIDS United Nations (UN) Member States to help formulate and implement durable, relevant, and effective capacity development responses to the most urgent marine issues of concern for SIDS. The assessment highlights …

Poetry For Seers Or The Peruvian Visual Poetic Tradition In Front Of New Media, Michael Hurtado, Pamela Medina, Enrique García, Michael Prado Jul 2020

Poetry For Seers Or The Peruvian Visual Poetic Tradition In Front Of New Media, Michael Hurtado, Pamela Medina, Enrique García, Michael Prado

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Since the first decades of the twentieth century, Peruvian poetic tradition has been characterized by experimental uses of language. Among these possibilities, some records tensioned this medium from the link with the plastic arts, as in the case of the poetry of José María Eguren, while others opted for the playing with the spatiality and visuality of the blank sheet, such as in the case of the work of Carlos Oquendo de Amat. However, it is not until the appearance of the poetry of César Vallejo, specifically with a poems like Trilce in 1922, that these breakages force us to …

From Ai With Love: Reading Big Data Poetry Through Gilbert Simondon’S Theory Of Transduction, Andrew Klobucar Jul 2020

From Ai With Love: Reading Big Data Poetry Through Gilbert Simondon’S Theory Of Transduction, Andrew Klobucar

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Computation initiated a far-reaching re-imagination of language, not just as an information tool, but as a social, bio-physical activity in general. Modern lexicology provides an important overview of the ongoing development of textual documentation and its applications in relation to language and linguistics. At the same time, the evolution of lexical tools from the first dictionaries and graphs to algorithmically generated scatter plots of live online interaction patterns has been surprisingly swift. Modern communication and information studies from Norbert Weiner to the present-day support direct parallels between coding and linguistic systems. However, most theories of computation as a model of …

Patterns Of Population Displacement During Mega-Fires In California Detected Using Facebook Disaster Maps, Shenyue Jia, Seung Hee Kim, Son V. Nghiem, Paul Doherty, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The Facebook Disaster Maps (FBDM) work presented here is the first time this platform has been used to provide analysis-ready population change products derived from crowdsourced data targeting disaster relief practices. We evaluate the representativeness of FBDM data using the Mann-Kendall test and emerging hot and cold spots in an anomaly analysis to reveal the trend, magnitude, and agglommeration of population displacement during the Mendocino Complex and Woolsey fires in California, USA. Our results show that the distribution of FBDM pre-crisis users fits well with the total population from different sources. Due to usage habits, the elder population is underrepresented …

The Perceived Usefulness Of A Weather Radar Display By Tampa Bay Residents, Michelle E. Saunders Jul 2020

The Perceived Usefulness Of A Weather Radar Display By Tampa Bay Residents, Michelle E. Saunders

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A weather radar display is a tool that provides spatially oriented, timely information about an impending weather event. While radar is frequently used by meteorologists, emergency managers, and pilots, this tool is now readily available for individuals to use on a variety of platforms including television, computer/laptop, smartphones and tablets. Most importantly, there are hundreds of mobile weather applications available as well as online sources that provide a weather radar display. However, little is known about how individuals use a weather radar display. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation is to understand why radar is sought out as a tool …

Why Quadratic Log-Log Dependence Is Ubiquitous And What Next, Sean R. Aguilar, Vladik Kreinovich, Uyen Pham Jul 2020

Why Quadratic Log-Log Dependence Is Ubiquitous And What Next, Sean R. Aguilar, Vladik Kreinovich, Uyen Pham

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations ranging from financial to volcanic data, growth is described either by a power law -- which is linear in log-log scale, or by a quadratic dependence in the log-log scale. In this paper, we use natural scale invariance requirement to explain the ubiquity of such dependencies. We also explain what should be a reasonable choice of the next model, if quadratic turns out to be not too accurate: it turns out that under scale invariance, the next class of models are cubic dependencies in the log-log scale, then fourth order dependencies, etc.

Hydrogeochemical Characterization And Speleogenesis Of Sistema Huautla In Oaxaca, Mexico, Fernando Hernandez Jul 2020

Hydrogeochemical Characterization And Speleogenesis Of Sistema Huautla In Oaxaca, Mexico, Fernando Hernandez

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Sierra Mazateca, Mexico is home to Sistema Huautla, the deepest cave in the Western hemisphere with 1,560 meters of depth and 90 kilometers of passage, including 26 entrances distributed in a high-relief, karstified terrain, within the Sistema Huautla Karst Groundwater Basin. Exploration of the cave has generated research questions about its evolution and geomorphology given the different vadose and phreatic zones impacted by tectonic and incision processes. Dye traces during this study of Cueva de La Peña Colorada confirmed it is a fossil resurgence of the cave system. An additional cave, Cueva Elysium, was connected hydrologically in 2019, expanding the …
