Virtually all western states now provide some kind of legal recognition for instream flows. On March 31-April 1, the Natural Resources Law Center will present a symposium on the different approaches taken in these states, with emphasis on such major issues as the purposes for instream flows, the quantities of water needed for these purposes, enforcement of instream flow rights, federal instream flow claims, private instream flow claims, and transferring consumptive water rights to instream flow rights. An interactive tool has been developed to assist database designers and administrators (DDA) in integrating schemas. It collects the information required for integration from a DDA, performs essential bookkeeping, and integrates schemas according to the semantics provided. The authors present the capabilities of this tool by discussing the integration methodology and the user interface of the tool.

The mode of establishment of Colletotrichum graminicola in maize ears to cause kernel infection was studied for two types of infective propagules and three sites of penetration. Shank inoculations with either oat-grain inoculum or spores induced a greater percentage of infected kernels than inoculations of the husk or kernel area with an infected oat grain or inoculations of the silks with an oat grain or a spore suspension in 1985. But in 1986, a spore suspension in the kernels ranked first among all the treatments based on the basis of disease severity on the kernels. However, a large percentage of …

The Taxonomy And Biology Of Strauzia (Diptera: Tephritidae), W. Bryan Stoltzfus

The North American genus Strauzia is revised. Five new species are included with keys to adults of the 12 known species. Host plant, important larval characteristics, and life cycle information are given for 11 of the species. The evolution of the genus is discussed and 14 host plants are reported. All species bore in the stems of Asteraceae, pupariate in the crown area or in the soil, and are univoltine.

The inventory and condition survey of rangelands in the Ashburton River catchment, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 1976 and 1978, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Botany Department greenhouses at Iowa State University are a rooftop facility including 17 separate houses, divided into three temperature zones. Some illuminated houses are provided to encourage good plant growth during the winter. One greenhouse is operated as a short-day facility and provided with curtained chambers for short days. Summer cooling of the greenhouses is effected by evaporative coolers.

The living teaching and research collections include over 800 plane taxa, ranging from bryophytes to orchids and composites. Propagation materials, as available, may be provided to other educational institutions for teaching or research.

Zusammenfassung

1. Die Wüstenkröte, Bufo raddei, lebt in der Nähe von Wasserlachen und Lagunen der Flußauen in der Zentralmongolei, wo sie in der Dämmerung erbeutet wurde.

2. Der Fang 1984 erbrachte nur 1- und 2(3)-jährige Tiere, wobei die metrische Entwicklung der Art auf Unterschiede zu Bufo viridis hinweist.

3. Eine Analyse der Variabilität des Grundmusters zeigt dagegen deutliche Parallelen zu Bufo viridis. Arttypische Merkmale sind dabei die dunkelbraunen Fingerspitzen und die Ausbildung eines Rückenstreifens.

Vorliegender Beitrag gibt einen überblick über die floristische Durchforschung der MVR.

Erste Kenntnisse über die Flora der Mongolei stammen aus dem 18. Jh. und der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jh. (MESSERSCHMIDT, BUNGE, MAXIMOVICZ). In der zweiten Hälfte und am Ende des 19. Jh. erbrachten vor allem die Expeditionen der Russischen Geographischen Gesellschaft umfangreiches botanisches Material (POTANIN, KOZLOV). Auch andere Forscher führten ausgedehnte Sammelreisen durcn (KLEMENZ, PALIBIN, SAPOZNIKOV). Nach der mongolischen Revolution von 1921 wurden von sowjetischer Seite bereits in den 20er Jahren Sammelreisen durchgeführt. 1925 wurde die Mongolische Kommission der Akademie der Wissenschaften der UdSSR geschaffen, die weitere Expeditionen …

The seed industry has routinely incorporated new technology into its research and development programs. Plant generic engineering is the most recent technology to be utilized for seed product development efforts. New sources of herbicide, insect, and disease resistance are being incorporated into crop plants using cellular and molecular biology techniques.

New regulatory guidelines have been developed which require regulatory approval before genetically engineered plants can be reseed in the field and ultimately marketed. The impact of these regulations on product development is unclear. Hopefully a dialogue will develop among industry, government agencies, and the public such that reasonable and appropriate …

Agronomic Performance Of Sorghum Hybrids Produced By Using Different Male-Sterility-Inducing Cytoplasms, A. J. Maves, R. E. Atkins

Experiments were conducted in three environments in Iowa to obtain information on the effects of different cytoplasms on agronomic characters in grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) hybrids. Compared with A1 cytoplasm, A2 and A3 cytoplasms delayed flowering; reduced the percentage of fertile pollen, the number of seeds per panicle, and grain yield; and increased 100-seed weight of the hybrids. Hybrids with A2 or A3 cytoplasm did not differ (p ≥0.05) from those in the A1 cytoplasm for plant height, panicles per plant, or for length, width, and area of the third and fourth leaves from the top of …
