On March 25, 141 were arrested as part of the largest demonstration yet against the drilling of geothermal wells in the Wao Kele O Puna Rainforest on the Big Island of Hawaii. The geothermal project, undertaken by True Geothermal Company and endorsed by Hawaii's governor and other high-powered, short-sighted people, has already invaded the largest intact tropical lowland rainforest in the United States. A “Drastic” Evaluation Of The Ground-Water Pollution Potential Of Karst Terrain: Lost River Ground-Water Basin, Warren County, Kentucky, David Baize

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Karst terrains, such as the Lost River Karst Ground-Water Basin, are extremely vulnerable to ground-water contamination. Seven physical factors: depth to water, recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, impact of the vadose zone, and hydraulic conductivity, are evaluated using the DRASTIC system to determine the ground-water pollution potential of the study area. A numerical value is calculated for each of the seven factors, and a map layer for each factor is produced. These layers are then “added” together to produce a DRASTIC ground-water pollution potential map. The effectiveness of each factor in evaluating the pollution potential of karst terrain is …

In this article, the author uses nonlinear models to forecast the value of four important housing characteristics. The article explains, for example, that each additional bedroom does not add a set incremental dollar figure to the value of a house. The results suggest that nonlinear models predict housing values better than linear ones.

The Truncated Cauchy Distribution: Estimation Of Parameters And Application To Stock Returns, Paul G. Staneski

The problem addressed in this dissertation is the existence and estimation of the parameters of a truncated Cauchy distribution. It is known that when a number of distributions with infinite support are truncated to a finite interval that the maximum likelihood estimator of the scale parameter fails to exist with positive probability. In particular, necessary and sufficient conditions which give rise to instances of non-existence have been found for the exponential (Deemer and Votaw (1955)), gamma (Broeder (1955), Hegde and Dahiya (1989)), Weibull (Mittal and Dahiya (1989)) and normal distribution (Barndorff-Nielsen (1978), Mittal and Dahiya (1987), Hegde and Dahiya (1989)). …

This collection of English translations samples the writings and/or critiques thereon of six important German geographers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: those of August Meitzen, Eduard Hahn, Otto Schliiter, Alfred Hettner, Siegfried Passarge, and Karl Sapper. Each of these scholars influenced in various ways the course of modem geographical thinking and instruction in German universities, and their methodologies were also adopted in part by professional geographers in other European countries and in the United States. Four of them—Hahn, Schliiter, Hettner and Passarge— were students of Ferdinand von Richthofen, often considered the “father” of professional geography in Germany. …

Plentiful precipitation in the central United States is one of the basic components of the successful agricultural industry in the Corn Belt. A combination of moisture, wind, and topographic factors creates an ideal condition for rainfall over most of the region during the late spring and early summer. In 1988, many ingredients necessary for wet weather were absent. The region experienced a drought unequalled since the 1930's. The drought of 1988 demonstrated chat the symptom of drought, namely, dry soils, can exacerbate and even perpetuate drought conditions by decreasing available moisture, altering circulation patterns vital to storm development, and increasing …

A bibliography of literature on Iowa's Loess Hills includes references containing information on the cultural or natural history of chis western Iowa landform region. The bibliography is divided into six parts: general, archaeological, botanical, geological, historical, and zoological. Annotations are included only where necessary to clarify contents. Because of their rugged topography, the Loess Hills of western Iowa have resisted large-scale conversion to agriculture. This has permitted noteworthy persistence of native prairies and woodlands, along with their associated species. This bibliography complements two special issues of the Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science devoted to Iowa's Loess Hills.

The Loess Hills, which are a special feature of the eastern bank of the Missouri River in Iowa and northern Missouri, have been cited by Dean Roosa, Iowa's State Ecologist, as a "world treasure and ... our best-kept secret." These Hills are mounds of finely ground soil, "glacial flour," deposited by dust storms after the glaciers receded 31 to 12 thousand years ago. Loess is rather widely distributed in Iowa, but the extensive deposits (often over 200 feet deep) on and against the eastern wall of the valley left a rolling, wave-like, terrain which on erosion leaves vertical banks of …

The yellow mud turtle (Kinosternon flavescens) is an endangered species in Iowa known from six localities in the stare. The only large population is located on a private preserve on Big Sand Mound in Muscatine and Louisa Countries and is estimated to consist of 2,000 to 3,000 individuals. Following the removal of predators in 1979, density estimates have tripled as estimated by the Sequential Bayes Algorithm of mark-recapture data. Assuming the Big Sand Mound population was nor severely damaged by the drought of 1988, it is judged sufficiently large to serve as a source to enrich certain of Iowa's other …

The Cladocera Of Lake West Okoboji, Iowa - Revisited, Kenneth L. Lang

Seven stations, established in 1968 to sample Cladocera, were sampled again, using the same methods, in 1988. Seven species, all of them in low abundance, are new records for Lake West Okoboji. In 1988, there was little difference 1) in the ranking of the stations relative to abundance of cladocerans, 2) the distribution and abundance of the species by habitat-type, 3) the seasonality of the predominant species in the specific habitats, 4) the temporal patterns of the number of species and total cladoceran abundance in the specific habitats, compared to 1968. One hundred and forty-one people, led by Native Hawaiians, were arrested on 25 March 1990 as part of the largest demonstration yet against geothermal development in Hawaii. The gathering was intended to focus attention on Native Hawaiian rights and the ecological consequences of drilling geothermal wells in the near-pristine Wao Kele O Puna rain forest. The energy project, undertaken by True Geothermal Company and endorsed by Hawaii's governor and other imposing figures, has already invaded the largest intact tropical lowland rain forest in the United States.

An examination of this small Texas community will also cast light on the larger world of which it was a part. The development of Olmos Park, then, was inextricably bound up with and reflective of the political machinations and social problems that dominated San Antonio in the first decades of this century. As Mauerman understood, the suburb was a fragment of the urban whole, an observation that needs to be pushed one step farther.
